WEEK AT A GLANCE
The Alvin Ailey performance today was just awesome and so inspiring. The children were a wonderful audience and as Alvin Ailey was inspired from seeing others perform, I hope the same occurred for some of our students. You can tell some of them were really thinking, from the very telling question, “Can you make a living from dancing?” It was a week of celebrating the Performing Arts with our Orchestra concert, and the Band and Orchestra performance in the evening on Wednesday. Thanks to Enrique and Chris for the beautiful music performed by their students. On Tuesday morning the Band will be performing during the school day so you too will have the opportunity of enjoying their music.
Sitting on my desk is a copy of the book, Martin’s Big Words by Doreen Rappaport. In her book, Doreen captures the life of Martin as a young child into adulthood using collage. Several pages share some of Martin’s famous quotes. One of the quotes from his childhood was “When I grow up, I’m going to get big words, too.” This quote reminds us of the power of words in declaring dreams. Martin’s words, his big words, even decades after his death, still inspire and remind us of the power of dreams in crafting our reality. So many quotes from his speeches have become iconic for breathing life, love and wisdom into the hearts and minds of people all around the world. Other quotes include, “Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that.” “Sooner or later all the people of the world will have to discover a way to live together.” “Love is the key to the problems of the world.” We are still working on achieving these aspirations.
“I have a dream…” Let us all continue to not only dream but to help the children we teach, realize they too can write and speak their dreams. It’s a mission worthy of the daily commitment we bring to our work of teaching and learning. If you would like to borrow the book, feel free to stop by.
