Capstone #7

All my hard work paid off. I finally recorded my capstone project. It took some time but I did it!

So when I first got up I didn’t really know what I was doing. I felt nervous that I would forget my lines. So I started and I blanked out. But then I remembered my script then I was doing pretty well. I didn’t say some lines but I didn’t really want to say them so it’s okay. After I finished I felt so relieved. After this I presented to my old class and the class my brother’s in Mrs. Luciano. I felt pressured at first then I just said what I was supposed to and I felt accomplished. After my presentation I asked my brother what he thought and he said it was good. This made me feel good for two reasons. One because my brother sometimes hates me and can be really negative. Two because he actually appreciated it.

I hope I can keep this up when I present to my parents. To see the video press the link below. Hope you enjoy.

Capstone #6

I loved researching about video games but now I need to turn that into a script. I finally finished my script and slideshow for capstone. And here is what I did.

Making the script was pretty fun and easy because I copied all of my information from my blog post #5 into it. Then I deleted words because I had too much and I changed the words into script form. I made some massive and some basic changes. For example, I added a lot into my conclusion because it wasn’t that strong of an end. After this I realised I still had to delete some more which I was wondering which ones I would delete. I wound up deleting some good information but I thought it wasn’t that good of information Making my slideshow was hard because I couldn’t find images that matched with my script. I also didn’t know when I should make a new slide. It took me a long time to make my slideshow but it turned out great.

Here is my script,

Hi I’m Sam. Have you ever played video games and wondered how they’ve changed so much? Well I chose video games because I had someone to interview and I love playing video games. My main inquiry question is how are video games designed and what role does technology play in designing video games?

Let’s start off by first talking about all the people who work together to create these games. A game designer, the person comes up with an idea and concept for the game and how it plays out. Then talks to the team. A big job is the modeller. The modeller creates the visuals, objects, characters and weapons. That is important because you need someone to make all of the objects like guns in fortnite. Another job is the animator, the animator creates motion for the games based on real life movements. This is cool because they put motion detectors on people’s body and they put that with the characters they make. They also have a level designer which makes the background and what you need to do for that level. There also is a UI designer, this makes the keyboard control, mouse control and mobile. They also do the inventory, the screen, map and how a user interacts with your game. Then a programmer makes the code art and sound that fits well with the game. And the final job is the tester. The tester tests the game to make sure that everything is alright and that there is no glitches. In my opinion there is no use of it.

All games start with an idea but I have wondered how do they come with this idea. Well here are some steps that companies use to get an idea for a video game. Think of games, books and tv shows that you like that you would make your game like but you can’t copy it. Then jot down ideas for your game so you don’t forget it. Ask people what games they wouldn’t want to play to get a sense of what games people don’t like and what they do want. Look at stuff happening in the world because you can put all of these things in your game. You have to pick a theme. A theme is basically what is in the game. Some examples are magic/fantasy, drama, comedy, western, problem, science, cartoon, horror, thriller, action and adventure. This is important because you need to have a main idea for the game. Find a genre: sports, puzzle strategy action shooter adventure simulation and RPG. This means what you need to do and what it’s like. After all of this you need to plan how much money are you willing to pay to make the game? Also how much do you want to make for the game and how will you make it? This sets expectations for you. You might also need to think about what kind of players will play the game bad, good or both? Is it solo, team or CPU? What console can you play it on? Can you play cross platform? A big thing is what would make people keep on playing? Mostly things like updates.

One of the big things in a game are the design of characters. People will also spend so money on it if it is good so you need to make the characters look really good. So people first come up with a backstory and a description. You need to make a lot of decisions in making a character. Then you need to come up with an idea for a character. Like his powers. For example : can he fly, swim teleport. To make the character good at certain things. Also who would he or she fight? What weapons can her or she have. What perspective would you see the character 2D or 3D. One of the very important things are that characters are made out of polygons not circles and then they use something called texture mapping because it makes color and texture for the character to make it realistic. A lot of the time when people make monsters they draw it out characters before making it 3D. It is called storyboard. They also need to make a lot of different sketches to make a pose the character does or different emotes. One thing EA sports does for the sports players is they take pictures from every angle of their head and wrap it around another head to make them realistic. All of these characters can take 1 day to 6 months if the person accepts it or not.

One big thing in making a good video game is the graphics. The graphics include the CPU the commentary the background and the fans. For some games the commentary is made by people have lines and they talk it into the mic and gets recorded. And when something happens in the game the commentator would say the line connected to it. For example, there’s a great pass and there’s a shot and goal!! Commentary for certain things were off. For example, when someone spikes the ball it says incomplete I don’t know what the offence was doing there. One big thing is making decisions because for different monitors there is different size screens so they need to decide if they cut off apart of the screen, stretch everything or give the person more space to see. One thing is everything is made out of tiny pixels. For example a coin they make it big in big pixels then they shrink it to fit. Some tools that people use are Game Maker Studio because it’s great for 2D games. People also use Unity for 3D games. One thing technology can do to graphics for video games is ray tracing. Ray tracing makes the game more realistic like make fake water into real water and add light rays through windows like in real life.

New technology changes most video games a lot but what were some of the major changes related to technology. One change is In old video games they had to draw and draw all of the movement for walking and jumping. Now they put motion sensors on people to make the movement realistic and into a character. Another change is old was 2D and new is 3D. This means old games were 2 dimensional and just saw the front of the characters and new games are 3 dimensional and you can see the front, back and sides. This was a big change in games because it added more things to do, like add more space to run in the game. New technology makes games more realistic with there fast hardware. A big change in technology is the AI is way more realistic and it makes moves like actual players. A change is new technology has done is great internet so you can play online games that don’t always crash. Another thing is new games are real time multiplayer unlike old games where you you go against other players high score on that device. Additional changes are portable devices that you can play whenever you want unlike always having to be home at your tv and you don’t need to buy another gaming console. One of the biggest changes is the CGI. The CGI is 3D and special effects making the explosions so cool.

As you can see, a lot goes into designing video games, such as coming up with an idea and technology has played a major role in the advancements of video games.

Capstone #5

Have you ever wanted to know something about a topic? Well I have to do it for a school project called capstone. And I wanted to learn more about, is video games? So I made my main inquiry question which is what your going to research about your topic. So I made mine how are video games designed and what role does technology play in designing video games? So I made my sub questions that were related to my main inquiry question. My sub questions are. What are jobs related to designing a video game? How do companies come up with an idea for the game? How are characters designed? What can you do with graphics? How has new technology affected video games?

The jobs related to designing a video game are. A job is a game designer, the person comes up with an idea and concept for the game and how it plays out. Then talks to the team. Then a script writer makes a bigger story for the game. Another job is the modeller. The modeller creates the visuals, objects, characters and weapons. That is important because you need someone to make all of the objects. Another job is the game mechanics, they make the rules balanced for everyone. Then a programmer makes the code art and sound that fits well with the game. And the final job is the tester. The tester tests the game to make sure that everything is alright and that there is no glitches.

Here are some steps that companies use to get an idea for a video game. Step 1: Think of a video game you like but you are not allowed to copy it. So you know what’s expected. Step 2: Think about what shows you like and what’s good about it. Step 3: Think about books you like. After brainstorming things you like jot down ideas for your game so you don’t forget it. Step 5: Ask people what games they wouldn’t want to play to get a sense of what games people don’t like. Step 6: Find out what they would want. Step 7: Look at stuff happening in the world because you can put these things in your game. Step 8:You have to pick a theme. Some examples are magic/fantasy, drama, comedy, love, western, detective, problem, science, cartoon/animation, horror, thriller, action and adventure. This is important because you need to have a main idea for the game. Step 9: Find a genre: sports, puzzle strategy action shooter adventure simulation and RPG. After all of this you need to plan how much money are you willing to pay to make the game? Also how much do you want to make for the game and how will you make it? This sets expectations for you. Overall the things that you need to do design video games are really cool and fun to play when they’re done. I’ve learned so much about the design process of video games and technology throughout this whole project. I hope you learned something new!

Capstone #4

Have you ever had to interview someone to get information for something you want to learn about. Well because in capstone you need to. For my interview I decided to interview Hunter Schulz. I chose Hunter because he’s my uncle’s son. For Hunter I made some basic questions for him to answer. For example, how long have you worked at MASSRA Studios and what tools do you use. I did these questions before he even knew I was going to interview him. So I finally asked him if I could interview him and he didn’t reply for a couple a days. He said yes and I gave him my questions. He sent back the questions late so I had to deal with it. I saw the response and he gave really short answers. Here was his response:

1 Didnt need certain jobs, just need to know how to produce work that the company could work with upon arrival
2 Ive been in the video game industry for 15 years
3 pencil, paper, and/or photoshop.
4 It can take from one day to 4 months to create a character. Based on feedback and development.
5 THe hardest part is creating something new and fresh while still feeling familiar
6 The easiest part different for everyone. But essentially nothing is easy. Effort is always needed if you aim to make something memorable.
7 my favorite part is the begin phase when the paper is blank and your imagination is wide open to the possibilities, and then to see it take
shape is satisfying too.
8 What are the people who help me? Anyone with an opinion can help you, if listen to whats underlying their response to your work.
9 i keep designing characters because it is what i do, since a young age, its an impulse. If you have to try and force yourself to do this
you will never last as their are tens of thousands of people who sleep, breath, eat this.
10 Its good to start with at least 3 sketches, but usually many more.
11 Developing a character can take minutes to weeks, depending on the development cycle, attention to detail and complexity of the design.
12 Decisions are being made every second, every time you put your pencil to the paper you are in the position to choose one direction or another at a
micro and macro level. THe main decisions are: what are you trying to convey with the character. What is their personality. What function
do they serve in the world as a whole, how is their outfit or armor made how is it meant to be used. Form follows function etc.
13 Characters look real by understanding how your eye perceives the world. Understanding form and perspective, value, anatomy, how different materials
respond to light. THe list goes on.
14 ideas come as a result of analyzing and understanding the problem needing to be solved. Sometimes they pop in your head before you start
other times you let your pencil search the page for a shape to spark an idea, other times searching through reference.
15 i Became a Concept designer because it was a job that allowed me to do what i love most (creating/drawing) and allows me to live a stable
and exciting life.

Some of this I really liked but some I thought was no use. What I liked was the tools, how long it took and how many sketches. This wasn’t that much use because I was already done with my essay. After this I planned a different interview with Ed a video game designer for xbox games. So I didn’t really want another interview but since we thought Hunter wouldn’t reply we asked other people if they know anyone. I called him and the interview took along time. He talked a lot and gave a lot of good information. The interview took 25 minutes. This information was great but I already finished my script so I didn’t know where I will put it. I think I will put some in but not a lot. Here are my notes that I think is important.

Microsoft xbox games/ forza series couple of months/ 20 years

Forza motorsport 7 next game

Wanted to be an illustrator/ no one job or certain job knowledge computer programing art writing

Planner plans out what wants to happen character platform shooter makes documentations ideas research what makes the game successful

Designer, programmer’s, artist and project managers

Work along time on one game till new console fewer team works on it 2 3 years on game

1 level 1 day in 2d 1 year 1 level 3d puzzle 3 4 months on average

Determine what’s fun understand what players play what do people do in games his own gut research what want to do and not/ lay game himself

After all of this I learned so much and I got to meet video game designers which I liked because I love video games.

Capstone #3

For capstone we had to do a site visit to get some information and pictures for your main inquiry question or sub question. My main inquiry question is, How are video games designed and what role does technology play in designing video games? So I decided to go to micro center because they sell computers and I can use it for some of my sub questions and a part of my main inquiry question.

I went there and saw a lot of computers. There were a lot of kinds of them but most of them were gaming. I saw some and my dad told me some things about the computer and how it works. I learned that the CPU stands for central processing unit and also where it is. I also learned about the GPU which I thought stood for general processing unit but it is the graphics. Also the GPU is really important for the computer if you have a good one it’s worth a lot more. Another thing I learned is what’s in the computer. There are fans and a lot of chips, circuits and wires. I also learned that certain computers could do special things like ray tracing. Ray tracing is making the games a lot more realistic like adding rays of light through the window. I didn’t take pictures but I actually got one and I will take pictures of it.

After all of this I learned a lot from my site visit and I think it was a great boost in progress. With this it inspired me to change some of my sub questions. I also think that I will have another site visit for more information. Come back to lean about my interview.

Capstone #2

For capstone one of the big parts of it was the main inquiry question and 5 to 7 sub questions. The main inquiry question is a part of a topic that you want to learn about. For example, how does tennis work and what skills do you need? For the sub questions you need to have questions that goes with your main inquiry question. For example, how you train in tennis?

For the main inquiry question I had some struggles. The first thing I faced was choosing one. I decided on how video games are designed and I thought that was good. But then Mrs. Cooper told me it wasn’t good enough. So we changed it to, how are video games designed and what role does technology play? Honestly I didn’t like it that much I was thinking more of the design than the technology stuff. I don’t know much about technology really so I don’t know how to incorporate video games design with the role of technology. Also finding sources would be hard. Yes you can just do what technology was used but I wanted to focus just on the design. But I realized on the bright side I would get more questions by having technology.

For my sub questions I already had some in mind. But after a while I thought it would be hard because there would be no sites but I stuck with it. One of mine were how do you design the characters. I thought that it would be easy because my uncle’s son designs video game characters. These were my questions. How does technology make computers more realistic? How do the graphics work? How do companies put all of the designs together to make the game? What technology is most used for video games? How do companies come up with an idea for the game? How do companies use technology for their ideas?

These were some of the things I had to go through in this project. It was a hard experience but this was a thing I had to do. If you want to see what happens in my next blog come back to this blog.

Capstone #1

I had to do a project called capstone. Capstone is a project where you research about a topic that you want to learn about. Than you need to make a slideshow from all of your research. When we first started I had no idea what capstone was. I had heard of it the whole year but didn’t really know what it was. But when Mrs Cooper started teaching capstone I got the hang of it. My first few ideas were tennis, football and EA sports. But I changed them to Tennis, EA sports and Warner bros. I did this because I love EA sports and tennis and the Warner bros I thought I knew someone to interview. But the person worked for a different video game company.

The one I wound up choosing is EA sports. EA sports is a video game company that makes sports game and more, and the characters in the game are pretty realistic. I choose EA because I had a bunch of questions that I could use, and I love their games and want to learn more. I already saw a video of how the make the characters in madden 19. They put a lot of pictures together and wrap it around a head. Now after talking to my uncle in Florida I might change my topic to designing video games because he has a son that makes video game characters. Also I love video games.

Immigration #4

The immigration project overall was really fun. I think that I was stressing to much that I won’t have enough information and won’t finish in time. I realized that I was forgetting things in my presentation. For one slide I forgot to put a picture. I watched a lot of people’s project and they had pictures of their person. Unfortunately I didn’t have any of her pictures. My favorite part was putting in pictures even though I never saw any that can fit with it. I hated the interview even though making the questions were really easy. I think that this was good help to start to learn about capstone.

Immigration #3

For the Immigration project you had to make the final piece on something called adobe spark. Adobe Spark is a website to make videos, graphics and a lot more. When I started  the project I hoped that I would finish. We had to make a title slide and more slides that can’t be more than 10 seconds each and not more than 4 minutes altogether. I tried many slides for my cover. I made one off a graphic that had the american and china flag on it. I also talked about how immigration worked. I found that finding pictures weren’t as easy as I thought it would be. I couldn’t find many pictures of what I wanted. Alice didn’t give me any pictures so I found pictures that weren’t her’s. The thing that I found easy was talking. But I didn’t make myself a script so I said what ever came to my mind. I tried to make mine as long as possible but I didn’t have a lot of information. The project didn’t take that long I did all of it at school. I had fun making graphics and putting it into my presentation.

Immigration #2

I interviewed Alice my grandma. I think the interview didn’t go as expected because she answered in one or two word  answers. I asked her questions how were you feeling when you left and she will respond with excited. Then I would ask why and she would respond because I was just excited. Which that response was not expected. I learned that she went to America to go see her mom. She didn’t expect to stay there but wound up staying there. I also learned that she first came to Hawaii before New York. After this I didn’t feel confident that I had enough for the presentation. So I talked to her a bit after to get more info. She told me a little more but, unfortunately I didn’t record it so I forgot the whole thing. I didn’t see her after so I couldn’t get more info. After a while I didn’t feel good about it considering that I won’t see her in a while. I knew she wasn’t going to give me good answers. I was wondering how did other people’s interviews go. Unfortunately I did the interview and there was no turning back now.
