Drita My Homegirl

My class just read a book called Drita my homegirl. We read it with our school librarian. The book has two different perspectives. One is about a girl called Drita who moves to the U.S.A. She came from a country with a war. Her mom is worried about her favorite cousin that is still in the country that they came from(I forgot the name of the country), and keeps, thinking that the cousin is on the T.V. Her mom has something wrong with her that she got when she moved to the U.S.A. There is only one person who’s nice to Drita at school. She doesn’t speak english, so she has a hard time getting around.

The other is Maxi. She is a girl who thinks the only way people will like her is if she makes them laugh. She has a fight with her best friend and gets into trouble at school. She has to sit out at recess for two weeks. When she got in trouble at school, her dad and grandma didn’t let her use the telephone, watch T.V, or go to a friends house for a playdate for two weeks. She gets invited over to a friends house to do some research, but doesn’t know if she will be aloud to go. Then her teacher makes her write a report on the new kid who doesn’t speak english! She doesn’t even like this kid. Her dad has found a lady she likes with a young son, and Maxi and her dad got out to dinner with them, but they don’t end up staying there long. Her grandma is a nurse, and the first playdate she and her friend have, she ends up staying in the kids room in the hospital till it’s time for her and her grandma to go home! Who could have a worse life?

Drita My Homegirl

If you haven’t read this book yet, I highly recommend it. If you are learning about immigration in school, then it will help you. It’s is having fun while learning. If you read it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. The book has some words in a different language that might be hard for you to pronounce, but it is more of a challenge. Again, I highly recommend it, and think that it would be a good choice if you are learning about immigration.
