While working on my capstone final script I came across the question, How has interior design trends change over the past 50 years and what influences have played apart in those changes. After I had started my question I worked on answering it in many different ways for about a month. I had different expectations through out the project. I had my worries and my wonders. I had Laughters and part of me was stressed, but it didn’t stop me wondering about the question so I kept on working on it and researching it, and working hard on it. Interior design. What an exclusive thing right?. Well most people actually have interior design in their house. For example, your kitchen, your bed, your couch ect. Well for my capstone project I am learning about interior design and How have interior design trends changed over the last 50 years and what influences have played a part in those changes? One way I think it has changed over the years is that all this new technology has been in play with interior design ever since the pandemic so it’s easier to have access to it. My interviewer Elinor Slomiak said that there is a lot of more competition now. Another way that I think that the culture has changed over the past years is that it’s more inclusive and more people are open to having it be significant to their culture. I think that Interior design has really developed over the years in a good way.
50 years ago was very different then it is now, especially in interior design. The 1960s saw bright colors,Bold Patterns, and objects from new lands brought back from trips introduced to the home reflecting the country’s mood. The early 60’s were still dreary, but by 1967 color had exploded. According to the website bostonglobe.com Donelson references a feature about a historic San Francisco home revamped with orange carpet and walls, noting that the owners were not trying to make a statement. “Orange was simply an accepted part of the design landscape.” The difference here is that back then it was much more orangey and colorful but now it’s more modern. Women’s and decorating magazines of the era balanced the latest trends with the way people really lived. Pages featured rooms anchored with traditional antique styles and sprinkled with industrial-infused mid-century modern designs of the 1940s and ’50s, considered rigid by its detractors. This shows that the designs back then were very different. This was one of the biggest parts in my script because it answered a big part of my main inquiry question.
Some things that were hard was working on my final project and memorizing the whole script in a short amount of time. The reason it was so hard to do is because I was so stressed about what if I didn’t memorize it and what if it doesn’t work out. The thought of me presenting in a short amount of time scared me. But I kept working hard and I didn’t give up because it mattered. Presenting has always scared me especially memorizing.
In conclusion I had a really good time through out my experience doing capstone and working on my main inquiry question and script. It pushed me to be better at many different things and it led me to show that you should never give up. It was a great 5th grade experience and i’m so happy and thankful we got to do it!
