Land of Stories – Worlds Collide – Reading Essay

The Land of Stories : Worlds Collide, by Chris Colfer it is about Alex and Conner. Their grandmother is the fairy godmother from Cinderella.  Their grandmother died in book three: A grimm warning. Alex became fairy godmother. She had a little problem controlling her emotions thanks to her uncle who Alex thought was her dad till her grandmother’s soul showed her.An evil witch called Mornia, The Snow Queen and the Sea Witch put a spell on Alex which makes her evil and even more powerful. Conner and his literature friends from his stories, Bree Campbell from the otherworld / human world and his fairytale friends Queen Red, Goldilocks, Jack, the fairy council (Tangerina, Violetta, Skylene,Coral, Rosette, Xanotus, Emeralda and Mother Goose who is not a goose!!!). Bree finds out she is related to the sisters grimm in book three. In that book Cornelia Grimm tells Bree that the worlds would collide and a portal would appear in New York. That happened exactly in book six.

Alex had no friends before she went into the fairytale book. She was shy. But when she went she fell into the book with Conner she was courageous. But in book four she is concerned about people/ kind hearted. For example when Rook saved Alex from dying it said in the book: The farmers son didn’t move, and Alex realized that her worst nightmare had come true: Someone she loved had been hurt. A tsunami of emotions rushed through her body, and the witches curse returned. That shows that Alex cares for people she loves like Rook. Alex changed by being fierce and destructive. She changed because she got a spelled by Mornia. The book takes place in New York.

I think that the author’s message is that you are not always what you think you are/don’t judge a book by it’s cover. For example Alex didn’t think she very powerful. But she is very powerful. That is why she destroyed a lot of New York even though the spell helped her a little. Some questions and ideas I had when I was reading were, they could do this or this, (idea). The author put a flashback. The whole story was a flashback except the first little part and the last part is not a flashback. This story takes place in New York. I do not remember when I finished this book but I really like this book. I like it because it has twins that are adventurous who go in to fairytales and I like fairytales. I think the author did well in hooking the reader to the book. This book reminds me of my friends and I and all the amazing things we done. I think the author  wants the reader to feel adventurous, daring and free. I really like this book and I would recommend this book to other people.

By the way the links go to a land of stories Wiki so when you go on it you should probably search up all the other characters I mention in my essay. Bye!! 🙂

Colonial Essay – Cooking

Hi guys! At school we have been learning about colonial times. We had to write/type our own colonial essay. My essay is first person. Here is my colonial essay:

Hello Friends! My name is Elizabeth Rose Wright. We have finally arrived in the new world. The so called New York. We are now making a New York colony. We have traveled far across the ocean in a ship,  see many people die of sickness and hunger. I asked King George if I could go to the new land to have a new life. We are reaching the starving times. My job is the cook. Some other people have other jobs like farming, art, politics, shipbuilder and gunsmith. I am glad I got this job for this is what I wanted. Being a cook could be hard though. In the colonial times you would not go to a restaurant. Being a cook was very complicated because you did not have technology in the colonial times so you had to cook by the fire but you probably burned your hands very often. There was a lot of people to give food to and mostly the food was rotten, moldy, full of bugs  and many other gross things.

Corn, meat, fish and some other bad food was what I mostly cooked. Some people refused to eat these foods. If anyone wanted meat they must go hunting for meat. I cook near the fire for there was no microwaves or fancy technology. Black tea was imported from India and China. People rarely drank water. The water was bad and made us sick or made us die, instead they drank alcoholic drinks. We traded with the indians sometimes.

The starving times was absolutely horrible. Winter was bitter cold and we were scarce of food. The crops wouldn’t grow and our colony the fox meadow colony was falling apart. I decided to get an apprentice. I looked over at all of the children. I choose two Popan twins who were 12 years old. One of the girls name was Sophia and the other girl’s name was Sophie. They are amazing girls. Sophia has dark brown hair with blue little bows in her hair. She wore a white bonnet and a blue dress with red flowers. Sophie looked identical but had red little bows in her hair and wore a red dress with blue flowers. I taught Sophie how to bake for that was her pure talent. Sophia was taught how to cook main dishes. That was her talent.

Their mom recently died. The last words she said to Sophie and Sophia was “I am so proud of you two.” . Same happened to their dad. His last words were also “I am so proud of you two”. I felt so bad for the Popan twins who were now orphans. They were so close to me every second I felt even closer to them. I decided to take care of them. I was like their big sister to them. (I am 22 about to be 23) We lived in a small cottage where we made all the food. The villagers called it the kitchen. We ran a small business in the common room. We cook our food in our kitchen then give it to the starving people. Sophia and Sophie were a big help. Without them I would be yelled at and our cottage would be full of ill, hungry, demanding people.

Dear reader, I am lying in bed with a horrible sickness. I have left the cottage to Sophie and Sophia to be taken care of. Let me tell you what had happened…

As people were clearing out of our cottage, I said to Sophie “I do not feel so well. I am going to go rest. Please tell Sophia the same. I will leave the dishes to you two okay? “. “Okay.” Sophie said in a concerned voice. I weakly walked to the bedroom. I lay down feeling horrible. Soon Sophie and Sophia came in. They had made me some soup. I smiled weakly as Sophia handed me the soup. “Should I fetch the doctor?” she said quietly. “I suppose you should.” I croaked to Sophia. Sophia put on her jacket and shoes and was off. Sophie helped me out of bed and onto the couch. She placed the soup on the table in front of me. She ran over to the neighbor’s house to get a flaming ember. Soon she came back running with Sophia and my friend (who is a doctor) . Sophia made some food with the help of Sophie. Soon when everyone settled down the doctor looked at me. Soon after he examined me he said “You are very ill. You will have to go to the tent (it is a place where sick people go) tomorrow in the morning. Right now you have to have a good meal and a good rest.” . I nodded hazaly. The next morning I did not feel a bit better. I was taken to the tent…

And now this is where I rest. I feel a bit better. I close my eyes. I smelled the smell of food. Oh how I missed Sophie Mae Wright and Sophia Anne Wright. Just then a smooth hand touched my hand. I opened my eyes. There was Sophia and Sophie. “ Sophia Anne Wright, Sophie Mae Wright” I whispered. I tightly squeezed their hands. I was so glad to see them. “How is our cottage?” I asked silently. “It is in good shape. We brought you food. How are you? Are you feeling better?” Sophia asked worriedly. “I am feeling better.” I said softly…

After staying in the tents and having treatments I was getting better. Dear reader, do not worry I am back to normal now.

When I was sick, Sophie and Sophia told my friends I was sick while they gave them food. So, when I recovered and gave them food they told me that we should meet sometime. When I met them at the limners house they told me what I missed when I was sick. I told them “ A lot of people are dying from the sickness like Sophie and Sophia’s parents” . My friends are a blacksmith, shipbuilder who’s name is William James Walker, limner and traditional person. They are very good friends. I often invite them to my house to eat. Some of them are older than me.

I am in hiding  right now. We are having a war. Sophie and Sophia are right next to me underground. “Slam!!” The trapdoor slammed as four figures jumped in and locked the trapdoor. “Thank goodness that was so close” said one of the figures. “I recognize that voice!” I thought to myself. As I listened I got up and crawled to the four figures “Guys what happened?” I asked. “They are having some type of war!” The limner said. Sophie and Sophia slowly got up and laid out everything in their bags. There was a bunch of weapons from their dad. They were old and worn out. We all looked at them in silence. Me and the blacksmith looked at each other and said “I get your message Sophie and Sophia.” Me and Sophia pushed open the mini fireplace. Everyone else pushed open their mini workspaces. We worked hard to make weapons to defend ourselves. We knew danger was coming soon. Suddenly the trapdoor got busted into pieces. We all ran to our positions as indians came barging in. Then we striked. It was pretty surprising what we did. We defeated the indians with many weapons remaining. We all looked at each other with surprised smiles on our faces. We jumped up and into the war. Of course it was harder than defeating the small troop of indians.

Dear Readers

Subject: The End

Dear readers,

Do not worry we survived the war. Sadly William died from sickness when he was 38 years old. I am living a wonderful life. My other friends that are older than me are sort of Sophie,Sophia and my parents.  I met a girl patient named Alyssa and became friends with her. Her parents died so she moved in with me. Sophie got sick but Alyssa got to help the poor girl and we lived happily ever after!

Juliet and I – Personal Essay

Some people think that having a sibling is annoying and bad. I wouldn’t exactly say the same thing. I would say having a sibling is complicated. It has ups and downs like a seesaw. Having siblings are actually not so bad. My sister Juliet (who is 13 years older than me. I am 9) stands up for me, keeps me company and always makes me happy.

Juliet stands up for me when I am in an argument. One time when I was having an argument with my parents downstairs. Juliet was upstairs working. She went downstairs to get water, when she heard us arguing in the living room. She went into the room and listened to us for a while. Then, unexpectedly (we didn’t see her enter the room.) said ,“Leave her alone!” and other things that made our parents argue back. Finally she said, ”Come on . Let’s get out of here.” I grabbed my phone and walked up the stairs with her. That is when Juliet stood up for me. This is only one reason why Juliet is such an amazing sibling to me.

Another reason why Juliet is such an amazing sibling is because she keeps me company. Sometimes when I am bored, have nothing to do, and have free time I would go to her room and hang out with her or she would come downstairs and ask me “Hey Vic. Do you want to come to my room?”. Of course when I am available to hang out with her I would jump up and say “ Sure!”. One time when I finished my work and had nothing to do, I asked my sister “Hey Ju Ju do you want to play?”. She responded by saying “Sure just one sec… okay what do you want to do?” I replied back, “Do you want to play microgolf? (it is a golf game on our phones. We are friends in the game so we can play against each other.) Juliet replied ,“Okay” while grabbing her phone. We would have a fun time playing micro golf and other games until we had to stop. That is when Juliet kept me company. She is a fun partner to play with.

Finally the most important reason is she always make me happy. When I am sad, mad or unhappy. That is good because you do not want to see me mad. Once, when I came home from some class (I do not know what class I went to but I can tell you it made me upset) tears were streaming down my face. “Vic!? Is that you!?” Juliet called to me. “Yeah……” I replied back gloomily. Juliet heard the sadness and gloominess in my voice “Are you-” she cut off as I shuffled into her room. “Are you okay?” she said again. I told her what had happened. She listened carefully like no one else would. She replied “Yeah that was very annoying/mean of them to do that.” usually others would say” Then just leave them alone.” or they wouldn’t pay attention and just say “Mhm”. Finally when we stopped discussing about it she would ask me, “Do you want to play?” I said, “Yes!” we would play until our mom called me. I yelled “Coming!” and ran down the stairs like nothing ever happened. That is when she makes me happy. My mom would be confused because she thought I was still upset. But thanks to Juliet I was back to normal.

Other people should care about this because siblings are not that bad. Sometimes they can be annoying, but I just gave you three reasons why Juliet is an amazing sibling. She stands up for me, keeps me company and always makes me happy. Even if I get mad at Juliet I will always love her. We are like cookies and milk. We go together very well. Without each other we are not as good. That is why siblings are not that bad.

News Type: World

In this article Athletes Who Don’t Quit by TFK Kid Reporter Marley Alburez, Marley explains that Rising Above: Inspiring Women in Sports is a collection of tales about 11 female athletes who overcame challenges and never gave up. Chapters focus on athletes like gymnast Simone Biles, surfer Bethany Hamilton,  tennis players Serena and Venus Williams and track-and-field legend Wilma Rudolph. These athletes’ encourage children. Their determination and perseverance are a lesson for children never to give up, no matter what other people say to discourage them. I love and am inspired by many amazing female athletes.

Gregory’s sons Elijah and Gabriel Zuckerman helped him write Rising Above. “We decided to focus on female athletes because we think they do not get enough credit” Gregory said. “There are so many amazing, remarkable female athletes”. Elijah says the stories show that if you set your mind on a goal, you can achieve anything you want.

Gregory Zuckerman is a special writer at The Wall Street Journal, a 20-year veteran of the paper and a three-time winner of the Gerald Loeb Award — the highest honor in business journalism. Greg is the author of The Frackers: The Outrageous Inside Story of the New Billionaire Wildcatters, a national bestseller named among the best books of 2014 by the Financial Times and Forbes magazine, and The Greatest Trade Ever: The Behind-the-Scenes Story of How John Paulson Defied Wall Street and Made Financial History, a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller published in December 2010. At the Journal, Greg writes about big financial firms, personalities and trades, hedge funds, the energy revolution and other investing and business topics. Greg appears regularly on CNBC, Fox Business, Yahoo Finance, Bloomberg Television and various television networks. He makes regular appearances on National Public Radio, BBC, ABC Radio, Bloomberg Radio and radio stations around the globe. Greg gives speeches to business groups on a variety of topics. A graduate of Brandeis University, Greg lives with his wife and two sons in West Orange, NJ, where they enjoy the Yankees in the summer, root for the Giants in the fall and reminisce about Linsanity in the winter.

Serena and Venus Williams are amazing at tennis. Serena had a baby not so long ago. Now she is back on the court. She is playing in the Indian Wells Masters. Venus is also playing in the Indian Wells Masters. Their father helped them get on to this path.

Bethany Hamilton overcame the loss of her left arm in a shark attack to become a champion surfer and inspirational public figure.Born in Hawaii in 1990, Bethany Hamilton began competitive surfing at age 8. Her promising career was seemingly derailed at age 13 when a shark bit off her left arm, but she resumed surfing shortly afterward and won a national title in 2005. A successful author and public speaker, Hamilton has shared her experiences in documentary films and appeared on several popular reality TV programs. Bethany Meilani Hamilton was born on February 8, 1990, in Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii, to parents Tom and Cheri. Raised in a surfing family, along with older brothers Noah and Tim, Hamilton learned to handle the waves at an early age. She began competitive surfing at age 8, and by age 9 she had earned her first sponsorship.A member of the Hanalei Surf Co. team, the home-schooled Hamilton proved capable of beating more experienced surfers in competition. In May 2003, she won both her age group and the open division of Hawaii’s Local Motion/Ezekiel Surf Into Summer event. Shortly afterward, she finished second in the open women’s division of the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) National Championships at San Clemente, California.

Personal Response

I think that women have a lot of power but they do not get enough credit for all the amazing things they do. Men do not have all the power and they should not get too much credit. I think female and male athletes are equally the same. They should have same credit. They have the same power. That is why I am glad that Gregory Zuckerman and his sons wrote this book.
