Summary: On April 15, 2019, the 850-year-old Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris was swallowed by flames in a giant blaze. At 6:20 pm, (in France) the fire alarm in Notre Dame went off and the church officials evacuated all the worshipers. When the second alarm went off, though, they could see the flames. Thousands of witnesses watched as the cathedral’s rooftop was engulfed in flames. It took hundreds of firefighters to fight the fire, but even then, it still took 12 hours to put out the flames. Some invaluable objects were saved, such as the Crown of Thorns. The cause of the fire appeared to be an accident. Although President Emmanuel Macron was optimistic and thought the cathedral would be ready to greet tourists for the 2024 Paris Olympics, but experts think it will take a lot longer to restore the historic cathedral.
Personal Response: I chose this article because I read a book series about France in 1615 and Notre Dame was involved.
