Start and End of last year in Heathcote

The first week of fifth grade has been hard and fun at the same time. There is lots of things that I enjoyed on the first week and there’s lots of things that I’m looking forward to.

This first week of fifth grade has been packed with activities and lessons. My favorite was the identity map because I really enjoy drawing and coloring and I love sharing my favorite things which is what identity maps are all about. I got to share about what’s on my identity map to the class and after I shared, and  lots of people made connections to things they also like or relate to. At first I thought why do all the little people I drew look like skinny potatoes? But in the end I fixed it and just erased the people I drew.

I also really enjoyed making my locker sign because I’m very creative and I also got to design and color it with whatever I wanted which was very fun. When we first made our locker signs I thought that mine wasn’t that good and that all the logos I drew just looked like plain circles with colors. But then I made a few changes to it and it looks way better now. My favorite part of making my locker sign was drawing all the logos for my favorite stores. The last thing I really enjoyed was choosing to sit wherever I wanted for lunch because my and most of my friends are all in separate classes. We all sat somewhere different so when we got to choose our spots it was so much fun.

This year there’s a few exciting things coming up since it’s my last year in elementary school. The first thing I’m looking forward to is the volleyball game. I’m really excited for this because I LOVE playing volleyball and even though I don’t do it as a sport I’m very good at it and I think it’s going to be very fun. I’m also very excited for moving up because I’m  excited for middle school and I’m excited to see my friends that are in middle school. Also there’s lots of my friends that I haven’t been in their class ever so I’m hoping we get in the same house and have classes together. The last thing I’m very excited for is field day because field day is so much fun. You get to eat food and play lots of games with friends.

Overall, there were lots of fun things in the first week of fifth grade and lots of things to look forward to. What was your favorite thing from fifth grade?

Persuasive Writing Process

My Reflection on the Process

I chose to write my persuasive about littering because I knew that littering was a big deal and it was one of the main reasons why there’s starting to form global warming and that if I wrote about littering it would warn and tell people to stop littering. I also wrote my persuasive about littering because it’s something I care about and am passionate about. I enjoyed making the slide show because I liked adding all the pictures, photographs and standing out words. I think the process of doing this was simple because I had already had experience making a video aka slideshow in adobe and because Mr. Casal showed us how to do it and he is great with technology so we learned from him.  One part from this process that was tricky for me was the recording because even though I got through it pretty quickly I was struggling to talk smoothly into my computer and say the right words at the right time, I sometimes got messed up. My favorite part of this process was obviously playing with rainbows, unicorns and fireworks. My least favorite part was the revision part, aka finding mistakes. Like, wrong spelling and capitalization mistakes, personally I just thought that was boring, more boring and more boring. I liked writing my essay because I enjoyed typing all the information and facts I knew about littering, because in my slideshow video I couldn’t have every single piece of  detail I have in my essay. The hardest part of the process in my essay was revision because I had a hard time finding mistakes even though I had a lot.

My Essay on Littering

By Ellie

Have you heard of the garbage patch? I heard it’s 3 times the size of France!!!! That’s because people keep throwing their trash into the ocean without even knowing what they are doing. Also did you know that U.S. roadways accumulate over 51 billion pieces of litter per year! I think that is the reason why there’s always litter everywhere, but that’s not the only reason that there’s always litter everywhere there’s more.

Another reason  is  people are using the roads, oceans and beaches as their personal garbage collectors. One way to state this is that people are often irresponsible about where they put their garbage, you might think, “ Who cares it doesn’t matter where you put your garbage nothing happens anyways.” But you are mistaking, it does matter, in fact the more litter keeps building up, the more you will regret and damage the world. One example is instead of throwing your garbage out the car window, hold onto it until you find a recycling bin or trash can. Another example is that, I have seen people throw their trash right next to the trash can instead of in it, they are just being lazy.A second reason is that littering is destroying and polluting the world. You might disagree and think “who cares nothing happens when people pollute, why is it such a big deal.” Pollution is a BIG deal, when people pollute,  the world gets damaged.

One example that connects is that the more people litter the more the planet gets destroyed which causes many horrible things such as death, messing up the food chain and animals getting hurt.  One other example is that if we keep littering humans, plants, animals and other living things won’t be able to survive. So instead just pick up the litter you see and pick up after yourself too, a connection to this is the time that I saw a sea turtle with plastic wrapped around it trying to escape it but was struggling.

A final reason is that litter on the beach can be very bad, you might wonder “why is litter on the beach so bad?”  Animals can see litter such as plastic and can accidentally eat it because you obviously can’t eat plastic and neither can animals. The plastic can get stuck in their throat and can  die. One example that shows this is that animals in the water can get trapped in the ocean with plastic wrapped around them and could suffer because of not being able to escape it especially sharks because they need to move in order to be able to breath and we need sharks they are super important! Another example that proves this is that animals can eat something toxic, like a cigaret and could die and humans can’t survive without animals, without animals the food chain would be all messed up. You should be convinced after proving all the ways litter is bad, start making a difference and pick up the litter you see so we can prevent all these bad things from happening. Simply just do NOT Litter!!!!!

My Expert Book: Gymnastics

We just finished making our expert books and the most difficult part was thinking of what to name the chapters. The most fun part of my experience was adding the pictures. I feel accomplished about my final project and I think it was really fun making it. I think that the part I needed most help with was copying and pasting writing onto different slides when they all didn’t fit on the same page. I came up with the idea of writing about gymnastics because I have been doing gymnastics for 6 years now and I have been on a competitive team for 2 years. This inspired me to write a book about gymnastics and also share my experience with gymnastics. I learned a lot of things during this project and these are some I am going to share: 1) I learned that you can take writing that is falling off a page and add it onto the next page. 2) I learned that you can crop the edges out of a picture. 3) I learned that it’s not good to add two spaces after a word. I think that organizing my slides was pretty tricky for me because I didn’t know in what order to make the slides. Like for example, I didn’t know if I should put what to wear to gymnastics first or conditioning and drills first. But I think I made the right decision and I put conditioning and drills first. I didn’t really have much trouble brainstorming ideas for what to write. My ideas just popped up in my head and I thought that the best idea was to write about gymnastics. Gymnastics is the thing/sport that I know the best out of my three final ideas. My final ideas were gymnastics, tennis and dogs. Even though I had trouble doing some things I still enjoyed writing these expert books, and mostly because I have the best teachers in all of 3rd grade and those teachers are … Mrs. Rago and Ms.Rinaldi! And if you want to get the most amazing teachers in the whole wide world go to Heathcote School you will find the most amazing teachers there! Heathcote School is the best school if you want to have fun sometimes and learn a lot sometimes.

This is my expert book.

Thank you for reading!

Personal Narrative Reflection

I enjoyed writing personal narrative stories because I like to type  and I enjoy writing. Writing the heart of the story was easy for me because in my story the heart was easy to find  because in my story it pops out. I thought the revision process was hard because I had trouble finding parts to add text and make my story better. Typing was easy for me because I’m a really fast typer and I practice typing its also my first year using cromebooks because in kindergarden, first grade and second grade you have ipads not cromebooks. So for me its pretty inpresive the speed of my typing for my first year witha cromebook.

Personal Narrative

“I heard my nanny screaming, “You should get ready, you have to go to gymnastics”

I raced to my room and changed into my leotard and I fixed my hair and put it up into a pony tail. Then I jumped into the car and speeded to gymnastics.Im on the team so I cant be late so i skipped out of the car and ran into the gymnasium. The security guard said

“No running in the halls”so I guese I started to walk when I got to the gym I put my stuff away into my locker.

Then I waited for other girls on the team to come.About a few minutes later some girls got to the gym so I started stretching with them. I did spits and  I stretched my wrists out. When I finished stretching the coaches yelled “Levels 4 and 5 go to bars” im a level 4 so I went to bars.

The coaches said to practice stuff you need to work on for compation. I woked on jumping to the high bar because I cant do that yet. So I was practicing getting ontop of the low bar then I started to try to jump to the high bar.

But I kept falling and falling I was starting to get frustrated

So I went to get a sip of water and cool down. After I cooled down a little bit I went back up on the bar and kept practicing and then I was super tired my hands were sweating my face was red. Then the coaches said “Five minutes till its time to go home” so I rushed on the bar and tried one more time. The coaches were saying to  go get your stuff its time to go home  they told me to get of the bar but I didnt listen I was really unbalanced on top of the bar but when I was about to fall of did it! I finally jumped to the high bar I felt so relieved. I thought that was really easy!
