Inquiry Project Blog Post

Did you ever present a slideshow to people? Well I just did that, it was really fun and I will teach you about two things you learned about my topic and two things you learned about the research/presentation process.

Two things that I learned about my topic are that I learned what states are swing states and how they are important, and I also learned that 5 presidents have won the presidential election without winning the popular vote. I learned that Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin are all swing states and that they are important because they are not easy to guess who will win them. I also learned that the five presidents that have won the presidential election without winning the popular vote are, John Quincy Adams, Rutherford B. Hayes, Benjamin Harrison, George W. Bush, and Donald Trump. They have done this because they have won the majority of 270 electoral votes without the popular vote.

Two things that I learned about research and the presentation process are that when taking notes it is easier to write in not full sentences and that it is better to not focus on the people you are presenting your slideshow to when you are presenting it. During the research process it is easier to not write in full sentences because you can just transfer your notes into a narrative because that is pretty much your script. I also learned that it is better to not focus on the people you are presenting your slideshow to when you are presenting it because it can get you really nervous, but it is not a big deal if you forget a word or two.

Now that you know about two things you learned about my topic and two things you learned about the research/presentation process. I hope that sometime you will do a presentation.

Field Trip to County Government Building

“Legislator Austin” the chairman says. I turn on my microphone and say, “I vote NAY.” I didn’t want unhealthy food to be banned in the cafeteria. I love voting on bills, being in the chamber, and overall, being a legislator! In this blog post you will learn about two things that I learned in the conference room and two things that I learned in the chamber and two things that I enjoyed in the conference room and two things that I enjoyed doing in the chamber.

Two things that I learned about the legislative branch of the county government is that every legislature has a role in the process of a bill becoming a law. The first step in the vote is that the chairperson  calls on someone to speak, then we discuss  the issue and say our opinion, and then we say YAY or NAY.  The final vote was that everyone in our class voted NAY on a school uniform issue. We thought about it and got to say our opinion of the issue out loud. We discussed whether we should wear school uniforms or not. Another thing that I learned in the full house vote is that legislators have to say “Chair____,” into their microphone and then use their vote on the bill. For example, we discussed  whether to ban unhealthy food in the school cafeteria. We went to a full house vote. The majority vote was NAY.

Some things that I enjoyed about being a legislator was acting like a Legislator, debating with classmates, and saying our opinion to try to convince other legislators and what we thought about the idea. I also enjoyed being called legislator Austin because it really put me in a legislators shoes, saying YAY or NAY was enjoyable because when you said either one you were claiming that something should or shouldn’t happen (it makes me feel like I have a lot of power). I liked using my microphone to say what I thought and why. When I got called on to say my vote I turned on my microphone, said my explanation and then said NAY.

Overall I talked about two things that I learned in the conference room and two things that I learned in the chamber and two things that I enjoyed in the conference room and two things that I enjoyed in the chamber. I loved being a legislator and I think that you would too!

First Week of School

Have you ever had a great summer break and have wondered what you were going to do that year? Because that is what I just did. But you shouldn’t worry, it is fun when you get in the groove of it. In this blog post, I am going to tell you about some of the fun things that I have done in 5th grade so far, and some things that I am looking forward to, including some field trips and special events. Maybe you’ll do some of them too!

Two enjoyable activities from the first week were the index card challenge and the identity map. One thing I enjoyed was the index card challenge, we tried to make a tower out of index cards. The object of the challenge is to build the tallest possible tower with 100 index cards in 15 minutes! I enjoyed this challenge because me and my team had to communicate and share our ideas to succeed. We got to come up with our own design. We thought that the pyramid was the most successful. The team with the tallest tower won. I also enjoyed making my identity map, because it really is a chance to express yourself and put the things that you enjoy on display. It is also a chance to see what your friends like and make connections. I think that this activity is fun. You create columns, write things that you enjoy, go over it in Sharpie ultra fine tip, color in the boxes and then you are done!

Two events that I have been looking forward to this year are the Hot Dog Field Day and the moving up ceremony. I am looking forward to hot dog field day because I like to be outside and get fresh air and play sports with my friends and then coming inside to eat a yummy hotdog and talk about how fun it was. At field day you get to play kickball and flag football for example. I think that it will be very fun. I am also looking forward to the moving up ceremony because I get to have a certificate that says that I have gone through all of the elementary school years. I will get to think about all of my achievements and be with my friends and my parents. Plus, I will get ice cream after. I think that it will be fun to celebrate that we are moving up to middle school.

Overall I enjoyed a lot of activities such as the index card challenge and the identity maps in the first week of school. I also look forward to a bunch of activities like the moving up ceremony and the Hotdog Field Day. I enjoyed these activities, and I bet you would too!

AmRev blog-Austin-#2

My topic is the Boston Massacre. I chose it because I didn’t really understand why it happened at the start and I wanted to learn more. My presentation is a Ted Talk. I thought it would be easy to click through when I am ready. I didn’t do a movie because I wanted to speak in front of an audience. I didn’t do an Ignite because I didn’t want the computer controlling the slides.I needed the most support with finding the right pictures. I couldn’t think out of the box. What I did to fix that is that I learned that I can only explain part of it with the pictures.

My favorite part of this project was that I could choose what I wanted to research and that I got to explain what I think of the event. The project helped me learn how to get information off the web. It helped me to not search for specific information and to find information and put it in my own words. I also had to think outside of the box when finding pictures for my presentation. I realized I did not need exact photos to match my script, I just needed photos that represent the information that I am sharing on each slide. This project helped me with being more comfortable with  presenting because after a lot of practice I now  feel more comfortable presenting  in front of a group of people which will 100% help me while I am presenting. I think that now that I am more comfortable presenting, when the parents come in it will go by like a breeze.

AmRev Topic and Research

My topic for the AmRev presentation was the Boston Massacre it was fun going through the process of researching and finding the information that I need to find and doing my own searches. It was not very hard to find the information that I needed. All I did was a Google search and a paragraph for the answer to my question will pop up or a link to a website that helps me find information that contributes to the presentation. If I could go back to the start of the unit I would do bullet points instead of going strait to the narrative. I would have had stronger sentences that are short but packed with information. Now I feel like I have a lot of run on sentences that I don’t know where to put the period.  As we are moving into the next phase I feel very comfortable because I think that I have done well so far and that I can start rehearsing because I think my script is good. I didn’t read that many books to find the information for my narrative which would eventually turn into a script to turn into my final idea that turns into the presentation.

Extreme Weather Reflection

At the start of the project, I was excited and happy that we were doing it because I thought it would be fun. I like to work in groups, but it was kind of hard to work with some people, because it was hard to execute the presentation without one person messing up. Then we needed to start again and at some point I got tired of needing to restart.

Honestly the research wasn’t that hard for me. It was just like being taught what you want to learn. You look it up, you usually have just what you need. If it is not there then you open a link to an article, but that wasn’t something I usually needed to do though. It was easier for me to do research on articles on websites rather than books because there weren’t many books on the topic of tsunamis, but there were many articles. When I was working on my script it was hard because I needed to find the perfect words to explain exactly what I wanted to explain. It also was really hard because I needed to make it within 30 seconds, you would think that would be hard enough right? I guess not, because then we needed to memorize every single word on our scripts and then need to make the perfect transition with my group mates so we weren’t off track. Finding pictures wasn’t hard, it was easy to know what was true or false or real or photo shopped because I saw in a picture a tsunami going over a skyscraper that was about 102 stories tall so I knew it was photo shopped. It was really hard to memorize my script because it was kind of long and since we were in groups we needed to memorize our scripts perfectly so the transition would be clean. During the presentation I was sooooooo nervous that my group members and myself were going to mess up, after it was my turn I was like “Whew!” I was so scared. The thing that I was the most proud of in the reflection is the fact that we managed to do this in a group and not mess up and if we did we would not care and knew that we rocked it.

My Pool is the Best Persuasive

I came up with my idea by thinking of something I love and have than I planed with boxes and bullets then I did a practice write. I liked writing because I got to say and explain why I liked my pool. For me the hardest part was the organazation because I just wrote and I barely thought about it. I liked the adobe recording and pictures a lot because I needed to do it, it was fun and I got to share about what I liked about my pool.

Partner Book Club Reflection

My favorite part of being in a book club is that I had a lot of books that I liked and that I was able to share my thoughts.
The most challenging part of being in a book club is that I needed to write down my thoughts, that is because I wanted to talk about what I thought.
I think that my favorite book that we read was Ellray Jakes is not a Chicken because it was the most descriptive book that we read. My least favorite book that I read was The Sloppy Slipup. I think that because there was no concept and it was really boring.
I think that I did good with my jots and that I did pretty good with punctuation, capitalization and organization. I don’t think I have a connection with any of my characters in any of my books.
I think that the most important part of having a partner in a book club is that you get to listen to them and revise yourself and tell your partner suggestions and compliments and corrections.
I learned that I love to listen to other people’s points of view so I can understand them and what they are trying to tell me in their way, and it inspires me to do that for my book partner.

Expert Book: The Piano

I came up with my idea by writing down my hobbies, sports, collections, and the holidays I celebrate. I thought that I should Write something I love like the piano. I started playing the piano in the last year of preschool, so I have been doing it for a long time. I love the piano so much. I picked one of my hobbies. The process of doing it was hard but the work paid off. So first I did the ideas then I did the hand then I wrote it in my journal then I did it on slides! The most difficult part for me was probably the organization and the paragraphs because I don’t really like to organize the book. I like to go straight on and continue the book. I probably needed the most help with the pictures because it was really hard to put them in at the perfect spot. In the end I was really happy with my book and it was really fun.

This is my expert book.

Thank you for reading!
