CapCon! 2020 YouTube Playlist

It’s nearly the last day of school for my fifth-grade students and it’s time to share a link to their Capstone presentations. Every year I’m always so proud of students’ final work because I have witnessed the full arc of their process, beginning with when their Capstone project was just an idea.  This year I’m especially proud because these projects were done while students were learning remotely during a pandemic. Not an easy task. But every single student completed a project and… rocked it!  Take a look for yourself…

I proudly present this link to CapCon! 2020 – a Capstone Learning Conference YouTube playlist.

Here are links to each student’s blog. Search for “Capstone” to find each their three Capstone blog posts:

Where I’m From

Where I’m From Poetry

George Ella Lyon’s poem,  “Where I’m From,” is credited as the inspiration for the many “Where I’m From” poems written by others around the globe.  Here is her poem:

Where I’m From

I am from clothespins,
from Clorox and carbon-tetrachloride.
I am from the dirt under the back porch.
(Black, glistening,
it tasted like beets.)
I am from the forsythia bush
the Dutch elm
whose long-gone limbs I remember
as if they were my own.

I’m from fudge and eyeglasses,
from Imogene and Alafair.
I’m from the know-it-alls
and the pass-it-ons,
from Perk up! and Pipe down!
I’m from He restoreth my soul
with a cottonball lamb
and ten verses I can say myself.

I’m from Artemus and Billie’s Branch,
fried corn and strong coffee.
From the finger my grandfather lost
to the auger,
the eye my father shut to keep his sight.

Under my bed was a dress box
spilling old pictures,
a sift of lost faces
to drift beneath my dreams.
I am from those moments–
snapped before I budded —
leaf-fall from the family tree.

Welcome to Class 5E’s Blogs!

Heathcote fifth graders have been blogging since 2014. Students’ blogs began as part of their ePortfolio, which reside in Google sites. Then, in the middle of our present school year, 2015-2016, students began using Edublogs, in anticipation of “going live” and having our blogs accessible to individuals outside of Scarsdale public schools.

Each student’s blog site contains a mix of posts. Some are in response to a direct assignment (e.g., Rube Goldberg; poetry anthology), while others are student-initiated. Students’ latest posts, as of June 2016, center on their fifth grade Capstone projects, which answer their main inquiry question.

Take a look at my students’ blogs and, if you have time, leave comments for a student or two, preferably for “Capstone” or “Rube Goldberg” (all posts will be from 2015-2016).
