Holiday Luncheon For Edgewood Staff

Every year the PTA gives a holiday luncheon to Dr. Houseknecht, Mr. Yang, all of the school’s wonderful teachers and hardworking aides. They held the event in the new library this year, which made for a beautiful backdrop. Good times were had by all.

Our Principal, Dr. Houseknecht – for 29 years he’s made the history of our school part of the core knowledge that every child learns while at Edgewood.

Multicultural Tasting

On Nov. 14, Edgewood held its annual multicultural tasting to give the students and faculty a taste of food from around the world. Twenty-three countries were represented, with more than 50 parents volunteering to cook, clean, and help out.

Friends and family members were even brought in to help, and some volunteers were seen cooking and prepping their food on the spot.

The classes came in shifts, and younger students walked around with their older buddies to gather the food on their plates.

Even the pickiest of students were spotted trying something new and delicious, as everyone raced to collect the miniature flags that adorned each bite.

At the end of the event, more than 9,000 morsels of food had been prepared, handed out, and consumed.

The Book Fair Was a Hit

In  November, Edgewood’s annual Book Fair was held in the new school library. There was plenty of space to spread out the wide selection of picture and chapter books, and children appreciated the elbow room. Children attended the fair with their classroom teachers, and they were also invited to return with their parents to shop later.

The book fair was a big success, in big part to an amazing group of volunteers.

Edgewood’s Centennial Kickoff and Annual Picnic

The Edgewood community had a big day on Sept. 24, marking several important events all at once. Shortly after dismissal, a special ceremony was held to mark the opening of Edgewood’s new library. The ceremony was also a kick-off to the centennial year.

The ceremony began with the pledge of allegiance, followed by the singing of the national anthem by the fifth-grade chorus. The student band accompanied the singing of the Edgewood School Song.

There were also several speakers at the ceremony, including Principal Dr. Houseknecht. They included Scarsdale Mayor Dan Hochvert and school alum and Village Trustee Carl Finger.

In addition, former teacher Dorothy Bench and a fifth-grade student also spoke at the ceremony.

After the ceremony was over, Edgewood’s annual picnic took place in the back of the school.

Music through the decades was played and all children enjoyed free Italian ices, which were provided by the PTA.

Welcome to the Edgewood Centennial Website!

This is a very special year for Edgewood Elementary School because January 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the school’s establishment. The PTA and Edgewood faculty are making every effort to ensure that the events it organizes this year are extra special. We’re also organizing some new events to mark this exceptional year.
