The Final Project of Capstone

“Sweat dripping heart pounding” that’s how I felt when writing my essay. “ How long should it be?” “ How many paragraphs do I need? ” This is what I thought about during CAPSTONE!

The essay was pretty simple. I just looked in my notes and in my video of my interview  to get a very good result but then…I had to BREAK IT UP INTO SLIDES! It might not be as bad as it was for me but boy was that annoying I worked and worked!

At first I wanted to do an ignite and I made my whole script and then I realized each slide needed to be 15 seconds and auto advancing and then all my friends said to do a ted talk because they are the same. I just tap the board to change slides and it does not need to be 15 seconds per slide. So then I started memorizing until I spoke in my sleep and then I was ready. All I did was practice, pratice ,and PRATICE!

After I finished the script then I just made a slideshow with all of the pictures then I just memorized and memorized and memorized! I really enjoyed memorizing because I got to do that with my friends.

In conclusion, It was hard but fun. I really enjoyed it. And I hope you do too!

Capstone Interview

The interview for me is the high point I got to meet someone who was awesome and cool. It was fun and I  learned a lot about newspapers that I did not know my interviewee was very kind and gave me a lot of information.

At first I set my standards low with maybe interviewing a worker from our town newspaper and then I started to think outside the box and remembered that my mom knew the “Science Editors at the New York Times” (Michael Roston),He used to be the “Social Media Editor,” so this would really work. In reflection, first it was challenging but then is started getting a little bit easier

At the beginning of the interview we had some technology problems so we had to start on my moms laptop and then everything went how it was supposed to go. In the end it was really helpful and fun.

I really enjoyed my interview. I am looking forward to the next steps in Capstone!

Capstone Topic and Main Question

Heart beating, palms sweating, that was the feeling I had when I picked my capstone topic. Now I am striving with my topic, so let me tell you how and why.

At first I was totally scared and then thought I had like 4 months and then I got more scared when all the months turned into day and then… WE HAD THE LAUNCH! Capstone was officially starting and it was all coming to haunt me then we all talked as a class and then it did not seem so bad. Then it was all I could think about and I was off and I did was think think think and think until my brain had enough and then i came to a point where I knew what I wanted to do and that let me to newspapers because I love reading news papers and the cross word puzzles are a fun add on so that was it! Just kidding, we have a lot more to go.

At first I had a strong idea for my main inquiry question but then I realized I had so many other questions to ask so I thought and then at first I was deciding between four then  I was deciding between two, ”What innovations have had the greatest impact on the evolution of newspapers?” Or “What factors have had the most impact on the newspaper industry?” So I picked, “What innovations have had the greatest impact on the evolution of newspapers?”

And now comes the fun part, the sub questions!  A few of my questions are:

  • How has the newspapers changing to online affected the jobs of people?
  • How has social media affected news?

I tried to make each of them relate to my main inquiry question. There was a few challenges along the way. One challenge was that it was hard to figure out what to ask and why it makes sense

So far so good now I have my topic main inquiry question and sub questions now we go on from there!

The Immigration Story of Isaac H.

Heart beating, out of breath, sweating nervously, that is how I felt when I interviewed  my Grandpa. I interviewed him about his family’s immigration from Germany to America and I turned his answers into the story of his immigration.

First I started out making the questions. Then I interviewed my subject in-person with some follow-up over the phone. Some of the questions we had to cut out last minute because they didn’t really make sense to me or my grandpa. It was really hard, I only had 2 minutes at first and you need 3-4 minutes so I had to do a lot of follow up calls and work really hard to finish it. I learned that there are a lot of parts of the interview and it takes a long time to finish. The most interesting thing was that I never knew my grandpa had immigrated from Germany- I thought he was born in America.  I used resources such as my phone, my Chromebook, adobe express, google search and I got a lot of pictures from my grandpa and my father.

Making the video was easier and took a shorter amount of time.  I had to edit my script a lot to add more to the interview and ask more questions of my grandpa.  Recording the voice over was challenging because it was hard to find a quiet place, I ended up recording in the closet.

This project was really cool for me personally because I learned a lot about my grandpa and where my family came from. I also learned how hard it was for Holocaust survivors to find homes and jobs.  I learned they were brave and strong and they were.

Zoos Debate Refletion

Have you ever been in a debate before, in front of your whole class, on video? Well that is what my partner, Kylie and I did. We were against my other book club members Charlotte and Zoe. We made an argument why animals should not be kept in zoos. Each person gave one reason and one piece of evidence and we had a debate. The topic we were debating about was “Should Animals be Kept in Zoos.” I think that picking the side, reason, and evidence that we think is the best is the hardest part. The part I liked the best was when we got to do a lot of research on our reasons and find good evidence that supports the reason.

First we look back at the practice debates we had to find our two strongest arguments for each side, for and against. After that we modify our reasons to be stronger and make more sense then we work on our evidence and review each other. We had the help of our partners and they were very helpful and they gave us constructive feedback.

After all of that we would make our counter arguments, introductions, and summaries. Later we practiced debating over and over so we would feel confident enough to present in front of our class. Finally, our teacher would call us in and say that it was time to record. I felt so nervous presenting, but my whole group helped by being supportive and before we presented, helping me practice.

In conclusion it was really fun and I learned a lot of fun and important information. I am glad because I think I did really well and left everyone thinking. Maybe you should start thinking of how you can interest others in so many other ways!

here is the video of me and my book clubs debate.

Things I Love

Have you ever had so much fun in school? Well, that is what I felt like when I made my “Things I Love” Adobe movie. And when I say fun, I mean really fun because I was literally writing about Things I Love!

Completing the assignment involved making a slideshow and then turning the slideshow into a movie. I got to work with partners and they gave me constructive feedback and they were a really big help.We had two weeks.

To make the slideshow, first we had to pick the things we love. Then, we worked on a script that had columns for the words people would see and what they would hear, which is the voice over. After we completed the script we went into the slideshow and added the word or phrase that would appear on each slide.

After the script was already ready to go then we added all of that to Adobe and picked the pictures and fonts we wanted to use, and recorded our voice overs. Lastly, we added the music that we wanted to add, but some people chose not to have music. I chose music and I had a lot of fun selecting the music.

After the whole class was done, we added the video to a Drive folder and our teacher, Mrs. Cassal added all of our videos to Youtube like this.

In the end I really enjoyed this and I can’t wait to use Adobe again I hope you enjoy my video and maybe you mite want to try Adobe and make something awesome!

My 10 Birthday Party!

On November 5th 20222 it was a girl named Eva’s Birthday. That girl just happens to be me. And 9 days ago was my birthday and I am going to tell you all about what happened before my party and after my party.

When I woke up on November 5th I was at my friend Bella’s house because we were having a sleepover. Bella and I both woke up at 6:00 so we watched something on her ipad and before we knew it it was 8:00. We went to a place called duck donuts for breakfast and Bella’s sister got a maple bacon donut and I got an oreo fudge donut and Bella got an oreo chocolate and gummy worms donut. Then my mom came to pick me up and there were presents waiting on my bed. We opened them and then we went to pick up my panda cake.

The house that we were picking up the cake at was near Denny’s kids clothes store. Me and my mom went shopping for an hour and when we finally finished my friend was calling me saying happy birthday. My mom, dad, and I ate lunch together and then me and my mom headed to rockin jump witch is where my party was

When my mom and I got to rockin jump it was 3:15 and my party stated at 3:30 and 5 minutes later my friend Natalie came and then all my other friends started to come and then we all got wristbands and sticky socks and we put our shoes on a cart with the presents. Then a lady who was our party guide led us into a big room with trampolines connected and we bounced for a few minutes. Then we played trampoline dodgeball. My team lost but it was still fun. After that we headed over to the ninja course and there was a bar where you swing into a foam pit and monkey bars. Then we went to the party room and ate pizza, pink lemonade, and fruit punch. After that the fun stuff started to happen and lights got turned off and I saw a big sparkler and candles. It was cake time and when they cut into the cake there were colorful pearls. Everyone’s parents came and my 10th birthday party was actually over. I am now TEN!!!.

In the end my birthday rocked and I was tired the next day but still amazing, definitely not tiring. Yes definitely totally but it was my best birthday yet and I hope all your birthday parties were as fun!

Halloween 2022

Halloween

Did you have a fun  Halloween? Well I hope you did because I did and it was so fun in school and outside of school. Halloween  educational games and parties were a few things I did on Halloween. What did you do on Halloween?

We had the Heathcote 5th grade Halloween party at school in the gym and lunch room and they blasted music and it was so fun. At school we had a Halloween parade on the day of Halloween and at school my teacher Mrs. Edwards gave us a Halloween menu that means that she gives us two papers one with fun educational Halloween activities and one with time slots, in the morning she has us fill  in the time slots and then has us do all the things we wrote down all the things we do. This was very fun and I enjoyed school Halloween with my friends that I won’t see trick or treating.

I had a good time at school but I had an even better time outside of school. I had such a fun time at my friend Emily’s party and there was pizza, desserts, and friends but the most fun thing was saved for the last… Trick-or-Treating! It was so so so fun and we stayed out till 8:30 and when I got home my mom, my dad and I watched scary movies with popcorn and the candy that I got. It was a success because I got 83 pieces of candy.

I had a lot of fun at both Halloween parts of the day, at school and with my friends trick-or -treating and I hope you did too. I had such a fun Halloween  and I hope that yours was fun too!

Identity Bags Blog Post

During the first few weeks of school we shared something called an Identity bag. Identity bags are something that our whole grade did to get to know each other and learn more about each old or new friend in 5th grade.

These are a few things I shared and why. I shared  A picture of myself and my family because I love my family and some people don’t know about my older sister Cameron in high school, I also brought in my sketch book because I love everything about art, and I brought in my camera because my dad has so many old cameras and has nothing to do with them so I started taking more and more pictures and I loved it. This is what I brought.

When the rest of my class shared we wrote everything down. For example my friend Maia said she loves art and her guitar and a few of my friends like sport and so they brought in something that represents the sports that they like,I can relate to that because I love soccer and basketball but different people like different sports some of the stuff that my friends shared I did not know they had or do something it was a fun way to get to know everyone better.

The Identity bags really helped  me get to know my class community better than ever. And I had a lot of fun sharing my Identity bag and the process of others.I hope you liked what I wrote and liked what I shared.

First Week of School

It’s  the end of my first week of school and I bet you wonder what were things that made my first week of school fun. Keep reading to see the life of a 5th Grader.

I  enjoyed the identity bags the most because each day different people shared their bags. It was fun because I learned new things that I didn’t know about them. I had a great time sharing my bag and I hope my classmates had fun sharing theirs. I also liked the index card challenge. We had the tallest tower and we worked together. I love that we worked together as a team and built stronger friendships.

I’m so excited for the class trips and full grade events like the challenge course, field day, or the halloween party. I like these events because we are together as a community and do all of these as a class or grade. In my opinion 5th Grade is the best year.

I hope you enjoyed reading this just as much as I enjoyed writing this. I hope that you had a good first week of school. What was in your identity bag?
