Rube Goldberg #6

Rube Goldberg #6

Tomorrow Sam and I are presenting our final video. Since our video is done I am pretty much done with the project besides clicking a button to start the video. My least favorite part was making the video and of curse when our project worked. My least favorite part was using dominoes and every time our machine failed.

My advice to someone who is just starting this project is to work with someone that you can handle. I mean Sam and I worked well together because we could handle each other. At times I was at his house for four hours. Believe me you don’t want to be at someones house for hours and hours if you don’t like them. My sister kept on telling me she hated this project and it was so hard. But really it was a really fun project for me. If you are starting this project go in with a positive mind set. DON’T DO WHAT I DID!

Once we finished our Rube Goldberg Machine I volunteered to make the video because Sam already did so much work with our planning board so I thought it would make us have an even amount of work. I love working with Wevideo! At times it was very stressful but I got through it just like how Sam and I got through our project. All in all I did not add everything that we used and tried to focus the video mainly on our end product.

Today we had a two hour delay so this whole morning I worked on our video. See the video for yourself. Click on the link Provided! Please Like and Comment

At 5:30 PM I went over to Sams house. At 9:30 Pm I left Sams house. In four hours and 14 tries Sam and I finished our Rube Goldberg!

I would say everything seemed to not be going our way. The electric motorcycle we used just had to loose it’s battery the one time our thing actually worked! You know how frustrating that is? News flash, Very! Also it was so weird that the BB-8 was moving and nothing transferred the energy to it. It was like there was a ghost in the room? I mean can someone explain what happened!

But finally our Rube Goldberg worked! See for your self in the link below.

Skeusch26 and I met again. I think this time went 100 times better than the last. We got a ton of work done! I think the reason for this is the fact that we did not get distracted. We worked the whole time I was at his house and we even worked when I left his house over the phone. I was a bit scared after our first meet up but now I know we can get this project done.

What we did was three things. Number one we tested, number two we revised, and lastly number three we filmed. Unlike last time when we tested our tests they actually worked! For example one test we did was pushing a car down a tube and hitting dominos at the bottom of it. After we tested we revised, which means we made our Rube Goldberg Machine better after we saw what the tests did. For example of this is that we had to revise our plan and shift the dominos so the car would perfectly hit them. Of course though we filmed the whole process so when we make a video on our Rube Goldberg Machine we can add our fails and successes.

http://blogs.scarsdaleschools.org/Skeusch26 and I met for the first time on Wednesday, I went to his house right after school. The first thing we did was gather materials we gathered everything we thought might be useful. For example Skateboards  and Dominoes. Next we just experimented we tested building blocks and a marble. We actually created a catapult by tapeing a triangle building block to a rectangle building block, and dropping a football on one side that sends a marble up.

I feel that Skeush26 and I worked okay together the first time we met. I just felt so free, like their was no boundaries. What I mean by this is that the possibilities were endless we could do anything and it was so hard to choose what to do! I hope it will be easier next wendnesday.

My whole grade is doing the Rube Goldberg project in school. The Rube Goldberg project is when you complete a simple task in a really complicated way. For example turning on a light switch or opening an umbrella… Rube Goldberg was an inventor who did wacky things like, completing a simple task in a really complicated way.

Or you can watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iemItSAT9Ew

Or check out http://www.rube-goldberg.com/

I Decided to my Rube Goldberg project with a partner. I did this because I felt that if I did it alone my parents would of ended up helping out. Then it would not be my project it would be my parents project! I Decided to work with http://blogs.scarsdaleschools.org/Skeusch26/ We plan to meet every wednesday after school. I chose http://blogs.scarsdaleschools.org/Skeusch26/ to be my partner because I never really work with him, and because I know we would each be doing an equal amount of work.

Rocketry Experience

Rocketry Experience

The rocketry unit in Mrs. Cooper’s classroom has been an exciting and a learning experience.

The five groups (the T.F.B, The Galaxy Squad, The Guardians of the Galaxy, The Space Grandmas, and The Superstars) had a lot of fun times while they researched, designed , built, and launched the rocket.

I learned a lot about science during the rocketry process. We had to think about drag force and Newton’s three laws of motion as each group designed and built each rocket. All the groups also learned how to work as a team and cooperate.

Personally my favorite part was launching the rocket. I was very surprised of how high my groups first rocket launched. Although I was happy with the first launch my second launch is not something that I am proud of. When my group pressed the button to launch our rocket barely went off the launch pad! So my teacher had us try it again, when we tried it again our rocket got at least higher than todays attempt #1 but did not go higher than launch #1. Although my groups second rocket did not go that high launching the rockets was still my favorite part of the whole experience.

Personally my least favorite part was compromising. My group had a lot of ideas and with a lot of ideas we had a lot of arguments. It was not fun arguing and disagreeing. But finally at the end of every argument my group had a compromise. I think that agreeing was my groups least favorite part of the experience.

Here is everything my class did in the rocketry unit. The first thing we did was research, each group watched videos, read articles, took notes, and even studied photos to help them later in the process. Next each group created an inspiration board. On the inspiration board they put quotes, images, and facts. Mostly things they researched. After that each group made a design for their first rocket. They either made it on paper or google drawing. Also they had to put why they choose anything on their design. For example one thing my group put on our design was why we decided to have a thick body. Than we built the rocket. My group decided to have a 12 inch. Body that was made of construction paper, with 3 foam paper fins that were in the shape of a triangle, lastly we had a paper nose cone that was pointy, and we brought everything together with tape and glue. Finally it came time to launch I was both excited and nervous. There were four readers that measure the angle, degrees of how high each rocket went. The last thing my group did for rocket number one was graph the rocket, figure out how high it went. We did this by taking the angle that the kilometers readers got and then turned it into meters using a special chart.

The first rocket process was the same as the last. Except my group new how high some other groups went and how low other did, and we new what things on their rockets made them go so high or so low.

When the rocketry unit was over my teacher had us do a slideshow about the process. In the slideshow my group included what we did in the process, why we did it, and how we did it. For example on one slide I said “We decided to use three foam paper fins so that our rocket would be lighter and consist of a perfect amount of drag.”

This is my Groups Slideshow:

My group all worked on memorizing our lines and when we finally did we had our parents come in and we did the slideshow for them.

This is my groups Performance:

Overall the rocketry unit in Mrs. Cooper’s class has been an exciting learning and a cooperating experience. And now that it is over I wish I could do it again.

Lima Beans 3rd Week

Introduction

We are growing lima beans. one plant has water, sunlight, and air this one is the Controlled. The two Manipulatives have just water and sunlight [The No Air] the other Manipulative has just water and and air [The No Sunlight].

Growing Without Soil

A plant will grow without soil, but it won’t be as healthy because it does not have the extra nutrients it needs.

Controlled Compared to Manipulative

The no sunlight  is unhealthy because the plants either don’t have air or don’t have sunlight. When sunlight, air and water is mixed a plant can make food. Food helps the plant grow. Like humans food gives plants energy. The Controlled has all of them. The Manipulative does not have all of them. Also a leaf is combined with sunlight it can make food. You also need carbon dioxide to make leaves. This process is called photosynthesis.  The Controlled has carbon dioxide and sunlight. The Manipulative either only has just carbon dioxide or just sunlight. Did you know that if a plant does not have sunlight it will use all of its food storage to grow higher? The plant looks for sunlight. A plant does this because if the plant does not have sunlight it will die, if the plant does find sunlight it will make food.

Why The Plants Look different?

The plants looks different because they are in different conditions. For example the people that live in Antarctica look different from people that live in the desert. Just like how plants that have sunlight, air , and water look different than the plants that have no sunlight and no air. Different plants need different conditions. For example, if a cactus was sent to a place that had a lot of water it will die. Just like if you gave the flowers that live in the forest ground were sent to a sunny spot would die. Plants adapted to their environment.

Plant Growth

The no sunlight is unhealthy and it is yellow. Also, it is not growing the seed coat is still on. It looks the same as the no sunlight for the plants. I learned that the plant needs sunlight to grow. The no air is doing very bad it has crumbled leaves it was growing because the seed coat is off.

Conclusion

Plants can grow without sunlight and  but it would be unhealthy. Plants can grow without soil, but it would not be as healthy without the soil.

Seed Pods

Pollination

We learned about pollination. I learned that an insect would go to a plants petals and suck up pollen grains then go to another flower and put the pollen on. When the two pollen grains mix it forms a seed, the seeds go down the stem and when they are ready they go and burst out of the plant. Next the wind, an animal, or water may take to a spot that it can grow and the whole life cycle starts all over again. How do plants get the insect to go on the plant? Plants are smart they have a great smell and their petals make it pretty to attract an insect. Did you know that the female part of a plant and a male part of a plant have to be both touched by an insect to make a seed.

My Plant

This week the big difference was my plant grew flowers. We started pollinating the plant, but since our plants were growing inside and there was no insects everyone used cotton sticks and touched one female part and one male part as much as they could. After we were done pollinating the plants flowers started going away and the stigma started getting bigger. In each stigma there are seeds. My groups longest stigma was 4 cm I think they is 5 seeds in that stigma.

What Will Happen Next

I think in 2 days my groups plant will have no flowers and the stigma where each flower use to be will have 10 seeds. Then after the seeds come out of the stigma the plants will start dying .

Week 2 Planting

Week 2

Controlled

The May 8th  the controlled was healthy. Cell 1 had 8 leaves and it had some buds the measurement was ½ of a CM. Cell 2 had 9 leaves the measurement was 2 CM. Cell 3 nothing was growing, and finally cell 4 had 4 leaves that was ½ of a CM. On May 9th was the same as the 8th. May 10th cell 1 has 7 leaves cell 2 has 16 leaves. Cell  3 nothing was growing – I think it was a dead seed. Cell 4 has 6 leaves. The only change was that  May 11th cell 2 grew 4 more leaves. May 12th the plant started dying.

This is What it Looked like After a Week

Manipulated

Nothing is growing.

This is What my Plant Looked After 2 Week
This is What The No Sunlight Looked After a Week

No Sunlight Compared to My Plant

The no sunlight looks not healthy. It is yellow and it only has a couple leaves. My plant is more healthy it has a bunch of leaves and is green. Also the no sunlight has a weird stem color

Realized

I realized that plants need water to grow . We realized that to drops of water was not enough so we changed it to 6 drops per cell. Also we realized that the lamp aka the sun was too low so we made the lamp higher, and it started growing again.  I also realized that plants will grow without sunlight but it won’t be as healthy without sunlight
