What I want to teach my students this year about social media.

What I hope to teach my students this year about social media:

  • Use Blogs to stay connected-by using Seesaw students can see their peers’ work within the class, but it would be great if students can see the work of other students in other grade levels or in second grade. I will connect my class blog to other blogs to another colleague in our building using Seesaw. Students will be able to “follow” other students at different grade levels. Students will be able to connect with other students.
  • Teach appropriate use of social media in a safe online environment-
  • Teach students when and what to “like”, teach students to write an appropriate comment/post, or tweet (in less than 140 characters)
  • Teach students how to maintain their feed/wall
  • Teach students to write a catchy title that people will want to read
  • Teach students to center and take pictures with the ipad camera
  • Teach students how to upload pictures and download files
  • Teach students how to tag people to a photo or video
  • Teach students to take appropriate pictures and videos
  • Teach students how to share on a blog
  • Teach students what is “public and private”
  • Teach students to use appropriate emojis, punctuation and capitalization
  • Teach students about cyberbullying and cybersafety
  • Teach students how to use proper facial “emoji” emotions when  commenting on peers work

My Option A Proposal 2016-2017

I’m so fortunate to work in the school district I work in. I am able to pursue what I’m most passionate about; technology.

This year is my “review” year. I chose to do a yearlong project with my students. I chose to do a technology based project because it is my passion.

My proposed topic:

  • Using Seesaw to Teach Students Responsible and Respectful Social Media Manners
  • At the end of the year, survey the parents in class (use a Google survey) to see how the use of social media (Seesaw, Twitter, Schoolwires) in the classroom has changed their way of thinking and or improved their conversations with their child about the school day

Statement of Goals and Objectives:

Social media is an important part of our lives, and, like it or hate it, it is important to teach the fundamentals of responsible and effective social media use.

Goal:

  • To teach students the basics of responsible social media use in the classroom through the use of the app Seesaw.
  • Teacher will blog about teaching the blogging process to students in the form of a diary to record thoughts and activities throughout the year on a blog
