Vote For Me

Joshua Keh your voice your way! If you don’t already know from the previous sentence, my name is Joshua Keh and you may be wondering “what is this for?” and I would say to you.. That I am running for class President! A few things that you should know about me is that I will always keep to my promises, I will never look down upon other people and I will NEVER EVER lie to you!

The first thing that I would change at Heathcote would be the whole entire fifth grade lunch system. Now you may be thinking that everything is perfect because we have fifth grade privilege, but you would be wrong because we don’t even have that! We also have to raise our hand to get up just to throw out a piece of tin foil! And if we want to use the bathroom we first have to raise our hand and wait a few minutes for someone to let us get up. then we need to walk up to an aid who has bathroom passes because without them we can’t use the bathroom. And sometimes they are even out of passes so we have to wait even longer and by the time we get to the bathroom lunch is basically over! If you vote for me I will make it so that you do not need bathroom passes and if you need to then you can just get up and throw your things out.

The second change I would make would be the fifth grade specials. Although we have the same specials as everyone else we only have them at 8:50 in the morning!Which is 15 minutes after school starts! I would make it so that the specials would be spread out because sometimes we need a break and a special would be a great time to take one. For example, say I would make it so that we have art at 1:45 or PE at 11:00  And I don’t know about you but I do not want to run a mile basically right when school starts.

In conclusion, you should vote for me because I will change the lunch system, and I will change the specials schedule for the better! Vote Joshua Keh for a better day!

Board of Legislators

KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK goes the gavel. “This meeting shall now start” I say because I got to be the judge! I had lots of cool lines, I had a cool chair, and I had the power to call on whoever I wanted! When we were discussing your topic “ should schools sell candy and soda in vending machines”. That was just one of the many fun things that we did in the Board of Legislators in White Plains!

I had so much fun on the board of legislators trip! It was so hard to pick but I will talk about my top three things that we did.  By far my favorite part of the field trip to the board of legislators was the mock court session. They randomly selected a person to be the judge and that was me. So it was very fun for me because I got to sit in a big chair and call on people when we were discussing our debate, “Should schools have junk food or soda or candy in vending machines”. I said yes and they should because it is the kids choice to buy something even if it is unhealthy. For example if they had a healthy lunch then they can treat themselves to a treat, and it costs money so it is the parents choice if they want to send their kids to school with lunch money and money for the vending machines. Plus the school does not force them to buy stuff. Another really fun thing that happened was meeting Benjamin Boykin II. One thing that was really fun about meeting him was the fact that sometimes he is not there so we were very lucky to meet him. And he used to be the chairman! If you don’t know what a chairman is, it is basically the lead of the legislators.

One thing that I learned about the government while on the trip to The Board of Legislators was there are about one million people in Westchester! This absolutely blew my mind! There are even twenty THOUSAND people in scarsdale! To me this was so crazy because I never realized how big Westchester is population wise. I also learned that the first chairman is about to be 100 years old in 2025. That means that he will be alive for a CENTURY!

KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK goes the gavel. “This case is now adjourned” I say. In conclusion, the trip to the Board of Legislators in White Plains was a super fun trip and I hope to go back in the future.

Last Year Here

Twenty-Two inches! We have to have won this index card tower! NOOOO! It fell over. But now we have a new and better strategy and it uses less cards! Twenty-Four inches. Let’s go! We won! The index card tower is an activity where you have 100 index cards to build the tallest tower. Our name was “Timmy’s Tallest Tower” Because we knew that we would have the tallest tower because of our cooperation, and the fact that we all had different jobs that were very helpful. That was just one of the many fun things that we did in the first week! And I know that there will be many more fun projects like that in the future.

One thing that I enjoyed this week is the index card challenge. I really liked this activity because I got to interactively build and strategize with my table about how to build it so it was stable and would ot fall over when we put the cards on it or accidentally touch it. Another reason I really enjoyed this project is the fact that we all had different jobs and because of that we all cooperated and I had the job of folding all of the papers so that we could stack the bent papers on top of eachother with a flat one in between. Other jobs consisted of… Livy built it, Talia strategizing and telling us when she thought that it was wobbling or unsturdy, and Yuval was doing a little bit of all of it. Finally we also got to 22 inches which was the best that any table got. And I felt super glad that we got first place. I also had lots of fun during the we make a difference project, especially when we had to draw our portraits of ourselves and mine was fine, but one thing was that my hairline was non-existent and I had a one hundred head instead of a forehead. My face was so long it looked like a giga chad with that crazy mewing jaw line that I put on myself. I gave myself a nose like squidward from spongebob or gru from minions. Another fun thing that happened was on the walk back from lunch/recess, my friend Theo told my other Friend Livy to chug her plastic water bottle so Livy did what Theo said and started to chug, and then my dumb impulsive thought squeezed the water bottle and since it was plastic water sprayed all over her . Then I must have given Theo an idea because then when Livy started to chug her water again, Theo squeezed the water ten times harder than me and got all of Livy’s clothes wet to the point that she was dripping and her face was covered in water. Same thing happened the day after and she got even more wet than the day before. Except it was only Theo who squeezed it.

One thing that I am looking forward to this year is the volleyball game against the teachers. One reason that I am looking forward to the volleyball game is that the teachers have not won in a while and I hope to keep that streak going. I am also looking forward to the Halloween party because I think that it will be fun to see and play with all my friends when we are in our costumes. We will be doing a group costume thing and it will be very fun!

In conclusion, the first few weeks of school were very fun and I had the most fun doing projects with my friends! I know that we will have a lot more fun and hard challenges! I can’t wait to do more! What were some fun things that you did when you were in fifth grade?

Crossing the Delaware

My topic, Crossing the Delaware, was a very fun topic to research, as it is well known by a lot of people. What also made it fun was the many paintings and engravings to choose from for my presentation video. If I were to go back to the beginning of my project I would have recorded little chunks so that each photo would have its own bit of sound making it a lot easier. As we go into the next phase of the project, I am confident about showing my presentation to my parents and my friends’ parents, as I do not have to memorize anything as I did a video and it was all pre recorded. This project helped me learn how to collect information because before this when I looked for photos I never used creative commons for my images until now. By far my favorite part of the project was finding the photos that I used for my video.

Extreme Weather Reflection

I was kind of nervous because Mrs. Rago said that some other kids that she has taught before were not so excited about doing the presentations on Wildfires, Hurricanes, Tornados, Tsunamis, and Earthquakes. I was ecstatic about doing wildfires so that was ultimately my choice. The original people in my group were Alex, Daniel, Charlotte, Bella, and me but then Alex left to do Tornados then Leah joined us. I was excited to work with everyone in my group but in the beginning it was a little rough because Leah and I got into an argument about who should do effects and I eventually let her do effects.

Finding information was easy for me because there are a bunch of ways a wildfire can be caused. They can be caused by cigarettes, campfires, powerlines, volcanic activity, lightning, etc. Those were ways that they can be caused by humans and there was more information on how wildfires can be caused by nature too. I found most of my information on Google or Ebooks. I found a lot of information that was useless for me but it was useful to Daniel. For example, I might find an article on a historical wildfire and it would not help me because I studied the Causes of Wildfires but could help someone else.

When I was memorizing I thought it would be impossible because I had never memorized anything besides lyrics to songs! Then I realized that I memorized the lyrics to songs by looking at the lyrics on a phone and singing the lyrics off there and that if I just kept on saying my script then I would just memorize it. It kind of worked like that but when I was memorizing, I had no expression so when I rehearsed with my group I had to practice with expression by reading my script over and over again I memorized it.

What I am most proud about the presentation is how I got to do three slides and two of the slides were my slides on causes and one of my slides was the conclusion.

Persuasive Writing

Essay

Have you ever wondered “ Why don’t you see elephants with tusks?” Or “why haven’t I seen this type animal?” If you haven’t wondered about this, you should. People need to stop poaching animals for their skin, tusks, and fur.

Stop poaching. I think that if poaching was stopped then many animals that are extinct  currently might not have been extinct. And endangered animals would not be endangered because poaching kills a lot of animals. For example elephants are evolving to not grow tusks because elephants are hunted and killed for their tusks because their tusks have ivory.

Another reason why I think that illegal poaching should be stopped is because animals like tigers, sharks, elephants, etc might go extinct in 2030 or 2025 due to poaching. Also there are so many beautiful animals that might go endangered or even extinct. And even worse animals are killed for fun or sport. It is supposed to be “fun” but it is the complete opposite. Animals like birds and sharks are killed with arrows or guns just to win a game.

My third reason is that illegal poaching should be stopped because if there are illegals poachers out there that kill animals, and there are only a few laws blocking the illegal poaching, the illegal poachers might kill the animals that do not have laws protecting them or they might break the law just to kill animals which is a horrible thing. Also the illegal poachers might be ( in the future ) one of the most dangerous things to animals.

You might be thinking “What would this do for the world?” Well, it would make sure that predators and other animals would not be extinct/endangered if some to most animals went extinct, that would mean that the food chain would not work. For example, if the food chain does not work, then there would be way too many animals that would normally be eaten by predators such as fish or mice. That would mean that fish would wipe out the remaining food in the ocean and the ocean would just be water and rocks. If the fish did that then eventually there will be no more food and they will die without food. Same with many other animals and environments. And eventually it will get to humans and we will have no food left and will be wiped out.

Illegal poaching should be stopped because it is pointless. There are only a few reasons people poach. And trust me the reasons are crazy. One of the reasons is for fashion. Some people kill cheetahs for real cheetah print. Or elephants for their ivory in their tusks. Another reason is because of sports. There are many sports that kill animals like hunting birds, sharks, foxes, wolves, etc. And they do that for fun. Another reason is they do it to “protect” other animals. They say “protect” because they think that when they kill predators they think that they are saving animals from being eaten. Although that is sometimes true they are still killing animals to save animals which is pointless because if you kill a wolf you might think “Oh I just saved a small bunny but in reality that bunny might not have even been eaten and then you just killed a wolf for no reason.

Last but not least, Illegal poaching should be stopped because even though poachers do it for fun or for fashion they do not think about what that does to the animals. How would you like it if you were relaxing, watching a movie and then all of the sudden you were shot? Well that is similar to what poachers do to animals. They would just be chilling and then BAM! They get shot. If you think about it that way then animals are killed because it is fun for humans.

In conclusion… WE NEED TO STOP ILLEGAL POACHING! IF WE DON’T, EVERY HUMAN WILL DIE! EVERY LAST HUMAN AND ANIMAL ON EARTH WILL DIE! HUMANS AND ANIMALS WILL DIE BECAUSE OF OTHER FOOLISH HUMANS THAT POACHING!

Reflect

I picked stopping illegal poaching because it is a serious problem. A difficult part was when I had to record, because when I recorded there was a lot of background noise, and the microphone I used did not work well. I enjoyed researching about poaching and the animals that get killed and why. I learned how to use a persuasive voice when I wanted a trampoline when I was seven and I had to persuade my parents to get me one and it worked. When I wrote my persuasive poem, Stop Poaching I could not think of what I wanted to write about then suddenly it came to me.

My Expert Book: Deadly Sharks

I was so excited to write my expert book but coming up with my idea was hard work. First, I listed out things I knew a lot about. Once I decided which thing I knew the most about I had to braindump. That basically means that I wrote everything I know about my topic, Sharks. I also had to read a lot to get the information I needed to write all about it. Next, I had to organize it which would probably be my least favorite part. When I was organizing to make chapters, subtitles and more I realized that I had way too much information to write down so I changed my chapter names, title, and more. Then I had to start all over again. Then I wrote it down, all of it then I wrote it on the computer which made me think “why was I supposed to write it down on paper if I am going to recycle it?” Finally I had to edit. Editing was really fun. I got to put photos, captions, fun facts, and much more. My favorite part was definitely adding the photos. It was very easy to get photos. First you have to go to insert then go to image then search the web. I hope you liked reading my book!

This is my expert book.

Thank you for reading.

Personal Narrative – Splash

BEEP! SPLASH!

I dove into the water. I accidentally went too deep but my head popped out of the water first. I was far ahead of everyone that was competing. I could slightly hear my dad cheering me on. My arms were tired, and my legs wanted to blow up! I still had to swim sixteen yards! Sixteen yards became seven yards in a matter of seconds. I could hear the splashing of someone catching up on me!

“My arms” I yelled in my head. My hands were so close to the wall when I saw who caught up, it was my teammate. I paused for a split second to rest my body. “Couple more feet to go,” I said to myself, starting to push again. My brain went blank, all I could focus on was winning. My strokes got wider as I pushed more water behind me. I could feel myself gliding faster in the water.

Just then, my hands crashed into the hard wall but the pain was well worth it. I grabbed onto the edge of the pool, yanked myself out, ripping my swim cap and goggles off in the process. I worked so hard that I could feel my stomach rumbling. When I looked back into the pool and saw everyone still in the water.

“Wait, I got first?” I said to myself, confused.

“I got first….”

“I GOT FIRST!” I shouted in my head.

Just then my coach came and said, “You got first!”

“Ok, but I have to get my towel,” I said politely, still thinking about the food I wanted so badly.

I grabbed my towel and began running up the stairs to the snack bar, looking for my mom. AlI I could think of was a juicy, salty, cheeseburger. Finally I saw mom.

“Mom? Mom. MOM!” I tried to get her attention but it did not work. “MOM I got first,” I shouted and she looked at me.

Before she could even congratulate me, I said, “oh and can I get dinner?”

“Ok,” she said and I ran off.

As I was sprinting towards the snack bar, my friend stopped me and said, “did you actually get first?”

“Yes, but can I get dinner?” I said, a little annoyed.

“Oh, who came in seco-”

            “I NEED DINNER,” I groaned.

Finally, I sat down with a delicious cheeseburger in my hands. I took a big bite, “this is even better than the feeling of winning,” I said, smiling to myself. “I really got it all today.”
