Hi everyone! Today I will be telling you what I’ve been doing in tech class recently.
In tech class we have started to work with balsa wood. Balsa wood is a very light and thin variety of wood that almost is like styrofoam. When you cut a tree trunk horizontally, you will see tree rings. But when you cut a tree trunk down vertically, you will see tree grains. We learned how to use a slice pen and a mini saw to cut through the wood, with and against the grain.
A slice pen looks like a normal pen on the outside, but when you open the cap instead of a nib (the part you write with) there is a sharp tooth like point. You use this pointy tooth to cut with the grain of the wood.
A mini saw is used for cutting through thinner materials such as balsa wood. This particular mini saw is used to cut against the grain of the wood. The saw’s blade is not sharp, but can still be dangerous if used incorrectly.
Overall, I have learned a lot about balsa wood and how to use different materials to cut through it. I had a lot of fun and I am excited to see what we can make with the wood. Thanks for reading my post!
