Vote For Me

Have you ever thought “Oh man! I wish Heathcote would fix these problems!” If you did, then I know who you should vote for me to be class president. Hi, I’m Jacob and I am running for class president. I will be very determined and will listen to any of your ideas. If you want to learn more about what I’m going to do, get ready to read about it!

Do you want to know a very disappointing part of the day? To me it’s the end of quiet time going off while you’re in the middle of something. It’s very annoying. I want to change that and make quiet time fifteen minutes every time instead of five to ten minutes. For example, when you’re doing something and you thought it was over to do it, you’ll be happy to see that it’s not over yet! This will mean more progress in your time of peace and fun. If you agree with me, I’ll make it happen and rearrange the schedules. I will find a way to make it fifteen minutes. But that’s not the only change I will make.

The second thing I will change is outside seating. Have you ever been in a rush outside because of the reclining chairs? Well I have! When I don’t get the chairs it is very uncomfortable for me because it hurts my back when sitting on the cushion. I remember when I gave my seat up for another person and when I sat on the cushion they were sitting on, I wondered how uncomfortable they must’ve been. My plan for this is that any flexible seating that doesn’t get used can get used by other people outside (even when it’s not their day to use it.) This will change a lot of flaws, especially sore backs!

These things are just a little bit of what I’m going to do for 5CL. If you vote for me I will try to make these things happen. Quiet time and outside groups will be more pleasurable. If these are not the only things you want to be fixed I am happy to take suggestions. If I win, what would you request for me to do?

Bananas about the Board of Legislators

“Wow!” Me and my classmates said in shock as we stepped into the looming chamber room. It felt like walking into a whole new world! I sat down on a chair at the back of the room and admired the chamber. It was a big, fancy room with fancy chairs, desks and microphones. A big chair and desk was at the other end, and it looked super cool. This room is a place where meetings are held and we were going to have a meeting here. This was one of the many cool things I did at the Board of Legislators building in White Plains. I also learned some cool things too. Get ready to read about the fun experiences and shocking facts I learned and had.

The Board of Legislators trip was really fun and I think I have a few favorite parts of the trip. One of my favorite parts was hitting the gavel. It made me feel like I had a lot of power at my fingertips. It was also so fun to slam the gavel onto a little wood slab, because it made a nice sound. I thought case dismissed! Thank you for coming! I watch a superhero TV show, and there are a lot of trials in the show, so being in a trial made me feel super cool. It was fun, but I also really liked the mock meeting because it is fun to debate topics. Also, there wasn’t much controversy, because we all voted that students shouldn’t be required to wear any school uniform. Although my favorite thing I did there was talking into the mic in the chamber. For some reason, hearing my voice in a speaker live is so fun for me. Sometimes I got too close to the mic and it was loud, and I said “I THINK THAT-” and it was too loud. I thought R.I.P somebody’s ear canals! That was louder than a smoke alarm! So, I put the mic a bit farther from me and it got less loud. These things were so fun, but this trip wasn’t all experience, because I learned some pretty cool stuff.

I actually learned a lot there, so get ready to read some mind blowing facts. The first one is that there are seventeen districts in Westchester. You might be thinking, why? I also thought that when I first heard that there are seventeen districts in Westchester. I said “Why seventeen?” The reason is smart though, making it one of my favorite facts I learned. There’s seventeen districts in Westchester so there isn’t a tie in a voting, because odd numbers can’t be evenly split. Smart, right? That was my favorite fact, but I have some other facts I like. A fact I liked was that there’s twenty thousand people in Scarsdale. This makes me so surprised because I didn’t think Scarsdale was THAT big. I always drive by a lot of houses in Scarsdale and I thought I knew the town well, but now I feel like I barely know scarsdale. When I heard that I was like wow! Is Scarsdale that big? I thought I knew it better than the back of my hand! That fact shocked me, but not as much as the next fact I’m going to talk about. The fact is that the first chairman in Westchester is about to be 100! This really shocked me, because being 100 I can imagine would be a huge milestone, one that some people don’t get to. In conclusion, I thought these facts were all surprising and unique.

In summary, this trip was awesome. I got to do and learn so many things that I’ve never heard or done. This trip had its funny moments, too. This was a great trip that I will definitely remember. But how would you feel if you were going to a legislative building? What do you think you would like the most?

Ignite Talk Reflection

This ignite was a presentation about extreme weather and answering a question about it. For example, if you were doing it about earthquakes, the question could be “how do earthquakes happen.” I was doing my ignite about floods, and my research question was how can people protect themselves from floods. I first did some learning on floods. I looked at websites, but it soon came to me that epic was the better thing to get information from.

Next, I organized my facts to say for each slide. Some of the facts I scrapped because I needed 15 seconds to say stuff about floods. Then once we were ready, we practiced. I think the biggest challenge was saying everything in 15 seconds when my slides changed. Another challenge was finding good pictures because it was hard to find one that described what I was saying.

Overall, It was hard and I felt huge weight off me when I finished doing it. I wouldn’t want to do another ignite because it was stressful and it gave me many sleepless nights stressing about it.

Use more public transportation

This idea didn’t come first because I thought there wouldn’t be much about this topic. But soon I realized that public transportation can solve some of our problems!

When I was writing my speech I liked how I kept on revising and making my writing better.

The hardest thing about writing it was probably the introduction. The introduction is hard to write because you need to hook the reader and make them interested.

I felt like it has hard to record the video because you only had 30 seconds to record on one slide, so I had to go pretty fast.

Partner Club Reflection

The most challenging part about being in a book club partnership was when I had to catch up on the pages I didn’t read. It would usually be a lot of pages and chapters I wasn’t comfortable reading.
I think my favorite book I had to read in the book club partnership was Superfudge. Superfudge was interesting for me. But my least favorite book I had to read was The Landry News. I didn’t really understand the story and I thought it was confusing.
The most important part of working in a partnership is to agree on an amount of chapters to read because you could be a really fast reader, and you want to read 3 chapters (29 pages), but your partner is a slow reader and wants to read 1 chapter (12 pages).
Although working with a partner is hard and can be challenging, it can be fun, too!

Expert Book: Bowling

This is how I came up with my idea: first, we had these pieces of paper where we wrote what subjects we knew a lot about. We wrote stuff like collections of things we had, sports we play, topics we like and etc. Then we picked which three things we wanted to write about most. I was going to write about fish, but I wrote about them last year. So I went with bowling.

What was a little bit hard for me was mostly finding a good picture for my book. I did struggle on other things, too. One example is I had a hard time coming up with an introduction.

The process of making my book was this: 1 – make a subject idea. 2 – write chapters and subheadings. 3 – write the expert book in my RRJ. 4 – type it on the computer. 5 – revise. 6 – revise for the last time.

My favorite part was when we showed our expert books to our parents. I’m glad they got to see all of our hard work.

I think what I learned about myself is that I know more about bowling than I thought.

I feel proud on my expert book because I put a lot of effort into it and it turned out great!

This is my expert book.

Thank you for reading!

Maglev Reflection

We placed three strip magnets on the bottom of the track. We also placed one donut magnet in the middle, two disc magnets on the front and back, and I put two smaller strip magnets on the two sides. It didn’t work because it was attracting to the side of the train. My table changed the idea and we made three short strip magnets on the bottom of the train. We also changed the track so that there was three strip magnets on the bottom too.

Three strip magnets on the track, and three short strip magnets on the train. I think my new train and track was better because it was more stable.

I liked the challenge because you could be creative and make your idea into reality. It was a bit challenging because everyone had to settle on an idea we all liked. But when we settled on an idea, we worked harder and faster together.

Personal Narrative Reflection

I am proud of my lead and ending because I think they were strong and would attract the reader. I also think that I used a lot of good describing words like latched. I think I improved my story writing.

One thing I didn’t like was I think I didn’t add a lot of dialogue. I also thought it was hard to make up different endings.

But overall, I think my personal narrative was great.

The Monsterous Trout

The chill breeze whistled as the motor growled. I checked the fish sonar. Little clouds of bait fish looked like a peaches skin color.

I walked to the fishing rods. I wonder when I’ll catch another fish, I thought.

I sat down on one of the seats on the boat. I picked up my mom’s purse and my hand found its way to her phone. I gazed at the photos of the pictures of trout I mostly caught. “When do you think I will catch another fish?,” I asked my mom.

“I don’t know,” my mom answered back.

I took a long breath of the crispy air. Wiggle wiggle! “Something is on one of the rods!,” Fishermen 1 cried.

I scrambled to the rods, found the wiggling one, and started to twirl the reel. The fish fought back good, but I didn’t give up easily!

My heart was pounding hard. Reeeeeeeeeeeeel! I spun the reel so hard I thought it would fly off!

After 5 minutes of fighting, I saw the lore charging at us. Now, the lore was 5 feet away from the boat when Fishermen 2 retrieved the fish. It had shimmering silver scales and light brownish markings. The fish thrashed around as the fishermen clicked it onto the fish holder.

“Wow!,” I said in wonder.

Flip flip! “This fish is huge!,” my mom said in amazement.

“Oh my god!,” Fishermen 2 said “this is a fishing olympics winning fish!”

I held out the monstrous trout as my mom took lots of pictures. “Now, let’s release this fish,” Fishermen 1 said calmly.

I handed over the fish and he unclipped the giant trout and it splashed into the water. He was motionless for a while, but then he started moving.

He swam into the abyss where nobody could see him. A peaceful smile formed on my face. My heart was flooding with joy as a happy feeling latched onto me.
