Board of Legislators

We squeezed into the elevator, excited to go up to the 8th floor. There a lady greeted us and brought us into the conference room of the Westchester County Board of Legislators. We talked about the population of Westchester and why there are 17 legislators. Get ready to read about my favorite things about the trip and all the things I learned.

My three favorite things about the trip were going to the conference room, being in the actual chamber and speaking into the microphone.  It was fun to be in the conference room because we got to discuss laws and it was realistic and interesting.. Another thing I really enjoyed was being in the Legislative chamber. We got to see pictures of all 17 Legislators. I found out that my representative is  Benjamin Boynkin. Guess what! We saw him in the chamber room! He surprised us by seeing us in person. At that moment, I was thinking I wonder how a person becomes a legislator. Another fun activity was speaking into the microphone when we discussed an issue. The issue was whether schools should serve unhealthy food from vending machines.  I thought to myself yeah it would be cool to add a vending machine. We took a vote and I voted that junk food should be in  vending machines. It ended in favor 22-1. We got to say our names into the microphone and hit the gavel, which was really fun. We got certificates signed by Benjamin Boykin and I am thinking about selling mine on ebay.      

One thing I learned on this trip was that there are 1.03 million people living in Westchester County. I was surprised that there were so many people living here. Something else I learned that was very interesting is how laws are passed. It starts with an idea then it needs sponsors then the representatives vote on the bill if it passes it is called a law. Therefore, even I can suggest an idea to the representative of Westchester County. If I could make a law I would propose that restaurants offer better pay to their employees.  Therefore, their employees would feel better about going to work and offer better customer service.

 

First Week of School

Did you love fifth grade? Well, I’m really enjoying it so far. Our first week was a blast. We had loads of activities. I’m looking forward to the rest of the year because we have many fun events planned.

One reason I had a blast this past week was that I made a lot of new friends, like Daniel and I got to see people I haven’t seen in a while. For instance, I got to talk to Jacob who I haven’t seen all summer. We talked about our summer vacations. He went on a trip to Florida. I was wondering if he got to go to Disneyworld and ride roller coasters? I told him that I was lucky and got to go to Aruba, where I went swimming and watched a lot of soccer games in the Euros. In one soccer game a player slipped on a ball and went flying in the air and landed on a boat. It was so crazy that it was funny. I was thinking this is one crazy match.Speaking of soccer, another fun thing I did the first week of school was play soccer at recess. I even scored a goal by hitting the ball against a tree and then it bounced in! Another activity I really enjoyed was making a self portrait.  After drawing my face, I picked out a quote to represent me. I picked the word Kindness and found a quote about being kind. “In a world when you can be anything, be kind.’’

One thing I’m really looking forward to is the hot dog field day. I love hot dogs especially when they’re juicy and meaty. Once I was eating a hot dog and the meat slipped out of the bun onto the floor and then my cousin started juggling it. That was fun until he dropped it and I slipped on it and landed on my bottom. I’m also excited about the staff vs. kids volleyball game. I hope we beat them by a lot of points, but since I’ve never played before this might be tricky. Lastly, I can’t wait for the Moving Up day because I want to be in Middle School. I’m going to stop trying to make people laugh  because I have my own problems to worry about. Like getting my work done and paying attention because Middle School is pretty difficult.

In summary, fifth grade has been pretty good so far and the rest of the year should be interesting too.  Now that we are the oldest kids in the school we get to do some unique things. They are rewarding us with more things that increase our school 

Spirit. We will have a field day where we will be able to play a bunch of fun games, one of them is kickball.

I am happy because I don’t need to worry about doing my presantation and I don’t need to practice recording anymore. The fun part was doing the pictures and timing myself on the script. the most challanging part was matching up the pictures and the recording because the slides would not be enough time for the script cause the script would take more time than the slide and if I messed up once on recording I would restart. you should record before the picture because you would know how long the slides are and don’t get too long sentences because six seconds is very short so it would have wrong timing.

For my project, I chose to create a WeVideo. because it was the easiest one.t how I felt about my narrative it was fun and challenging at the same time it was fun writing but I was out for three days so  it was difficult to catch up on the work but I caught up on it. Writing the narrative was challenging because at the start I had trouble finding information.I used different website like ducksters and ended up finding a lot of information which I later used in my we video.

My topic is the stamp act. For research I used Fact site,Ducksters and books. it wasn’t really challenging but finding some research was easy but some research was difficult to find. If I could go back I wouldn’t I think I did pretty good maybe trying to find more on the back round of the stamp act like more of how the French and Ind1an war caused the stamp act. i fell excited about the next phase of the project.

Colonial America Project Reflection

With this project I choose to do the Northern Colonies because it would be the easiest one. I used my notebook to take notes then I decided to make a poster because I didn’t want to use other things like Canva or do it on Google Slides.Then it was time to do research. It was hard to find information at first, but then I used Ducksters and books from the classroom. 

The challenge I faced was that it was difficult to find the right information for the Northern Colonies. For my final project I made a big poster.The only things I used were a poster, a sharpie and pencil. It didn’t take that long, it only took like a week. The part of the project I liked the most was making the poster because it was the quickest and it was easier than finding information. I think I did a good job but on my next project on the Boston Massacre I will try to write a little neater but I think I did good. 

 

Extreme Weather Ignite Reflection

First I did my research. It was difficult to find the right information and when I got different books they said the same thing.

Then I started writing my narrative. It wasn’t that hard and I didn’t have to type much. It took only a few minutes to write it down.

When I started my script I had a lot of words. It was hard to limit the information to 30 seconds but then I deleted all the useless words and it was much easier.

Before my presentation I had to memorize my script. I practiced in front of my family and I worked really hard but it was challenging. Finally I got it down.

Adding the pictures to the slides was very easy and it took only 10 minutes.

Working as a group was challenging because everyone was laughing and people were trying to make other people laugh.

I liked memorizing because I had a lot of time at home and school.

I was nervous but I knew I could do it. I was happy because I didn’t have to worry about doing it. I would not want to do it again because I do not want to worry about doing it again.

If I had to do it again I would just change my pacing.

 

Partner Book Reflection

One of my favorite book that I read in my partner reading was Sadiq and the Gamers because it was very interesting.  There were a lot of activities in the book that I liked to do that is why it is my favorite. My least favorite book was the book Kenee Ford the pages were too long and also there weren’t any chapters in the book so I got kind of confused. Also, after every page there was something completely new that is why it was my least favorite. It was a little hard to decide what book we were reading next. My partner Rory and I were pretty successful at deciding on a book.

I did my jots but adding periods was a little hard to do but that was the only challenging part of jotting. I like having a partner. My favorite part of being in a book club was that we got to read and we got to share about what we think about the book and other stuff about the book.

 My partner and I were pretty successful it was easy to decide  on the number of pages we were going to read. One of the characters that was similar to me was Ellray we both like going on adventures.The most important part of partner reading was reading and setting up every thing correct.
