Westchester County Field Trip

Did you know that almost 990 thousand people live in Westchester County alone? Well, I am one of those people. The county legislators are the ones that keep track of how many people live in places. In this blog post you will read about what I learned about being a county legislator. I will also tell you what I enjoyed most about being a county legislator.

Two things I learned about the legislative branch of county government are that in a discussion there is a chairperson and that sometimes, in the chamber, there is a public speaker that comes in and listens to the meeting. The first thing I learned is that the chairperson keeps track of all of the votes, starts the meeting, tells everyone what the meeting is about, and ends the meeting. For example, when someone was done speaking, the chair would call the next person “Legislator_______”.   The second thing I learned is that when the public speaker comes in, they say what they think after all the legislatures present their opinion. For example, the clerk would say, “Public Speaker _______” after the last legislator spoke.

Two things I enjoyed most about taking on the role of a legislator was voting at the end of the Conference meeting and when the 2 clerks took attendance at the start of the meeting. At the end of the conference, the chair calls every single legislator. He or she can reply “yay”for yes or “nay” for no. I enjoyed this because I liked presenting my opinion to everyone. When the chair calls the meeting to order, the clerks say everyone’s name and check who is here or not. If the person is here, you say present and if the person isn’t here you say absent. I enjoyed this because it was the first time we got to open the microphone.

In conclusion, this field trip has been one of my favorite I have ever gone to. I really think that actually being a legislator is more exciting than watching people doing it. In this blog post I talked about what I learned about being a county legislator and what I enjoyed the most about being a county legislator. Have you ever done anything like this? If so, did you think it was fun? Do you want to do this as a job when you grow up?

First Week of 5th Grade

Did you know that the tallest index card tower ever made by kids was over thirty-three in tall? Well, my fifth grade class did the same thing. It was just that the tallest tower in our class was only fourteen and a half inches tall. Read my blog post to find out about similar fun things we did during the first week of school. I will also tell you about what things I am looking forward to doing this year.

Two things I enjoyed during the first week of school are the Index Card Challenge and the Identity Map. The Index Card Challenge was where you were given a hundred index cards and you had to build the tallest tower possible in fifteen minutes. We worked by tables. I really enjoyed this challenge because it helped us think strategically and we had to control our frustration whenever our tower fell. For example, we had two towers going because if one fell, we could just continue with the other one. The Identity Map was where you were given a square piece of paper and you had to write what you think identifies you. I really liked it because it shows people who you are. For example, I play tennis so I put “tennis players” as one of my things.

Two things I’m really looking forward to this year are Field day and the Challenge Course Trip. Field day is a day at the end of the year where all the fifth grade classes go out on the field and we play different games. I’m looking forward to it because there’s going to be a tug-of-war at the end and everyone’s going to have to help with it. An example of another game is Capture the Flag. The Challenge Course Trip is where you have a team of people and you have to get from one side of the obstacle to the other. I’m really excited about this because I really want to work cooperatively with my teammates. An example is if someone has to climb a wall and if the previous person doesn’t help them, it will be really hard for that person to climb it.

In conclusion, the first week of school was really fun and I am confident that the rest of the year will be very busy, but also really fun. In this blog post I wrote about what I did the first week of school and what I’m looking forward to this year. Have you ever done anything I mentioned in this article? Did you think it was fun?

Ignite Talk Reflection

We had a unit in reading called,” Reading the Weather, Reading the World.” We had to find a specific research question about a certain Extreme weather. For example, I did ,” What do you do to prepare for a flood? ” for my topic, floods. We had to research, write a narrative based on the research , and then organize the narrative into the script. We had a week to do each, and then after that we had a 6 days to memorize the script and put together the slides. So in total, we spent  about a whole month trying to put together the presentation. The slides auto-advance every fifteen seconds, and we had seven slides. That meant we had 1 min 45 seconds to tell all the stuff we wanted to say.

Some of the things that were  challenging for me are paraphrasing and getting up there and actually saying it to the audience.Paraphrasing was hard because I didn’t want to change the author’s original words which always sounded so polished. It was hard to get up there and actually say it to the audience because I didn’t want to mess up in front of them and then that would be embarassing. The thing that I felt like I was best at is memorizing because i felt like once I knew the overall knowledge

Some of my feelings that I had before i started this project was that this project would be impossible and it wouldn’t be the least bit fun. But know that I’ve finished this project, I feel like I want to something similar again in the future.

it’s been really fun and i want to do it again in fifth grade.
