Passion Projects #1

Hello and welcome back to Rocio’s Story.

Today in Science we learned about Passion Projects. For my passion project I would like to do Fashion. In fashion I would like to do outfit designing. I chose this topic because I love playing around with he clothes in my closet, and making different outfits. I think as my final product I will do a poster because I can print different pictures of clothes, and make outfits.

Messy Science: Sugar and Liquid Experiment

Hello and Welcome back to Rocio’s Story. Today we’re going to talk about Messy Science. First of all it’s exactly what the name says it is, MESSY.

Today in Messy science we had 3 experiments. Each experiment had colored sugar and 1 liquid. The liquids were water, oil and vinegar. For each experiment we had 25 ml of liquid and 1 teaspoon of colored sugar. Before each experiment we had to make a hypothesis. A hypothesis is an educated guess of what it going to happen.

The first experiment my group conducted was where we combined oil and colored sugar. My groups hypothesis for this experiment was “If we mix oil and sugar then all of the sugar will rise to the top, because the oil is dense and the sugar isn’t.” When we combined both of the things, My group observed lots of things. The things we observed were that the oil made the sugar stick together in a clump, at the bottom. Therefore our Hypothesis was denied.

For the second experiment my group conducted, we combined vinegar and colored sugar. Our Hypothesis for this was that “If we mix vinegar and sugar then the sugar will go to the bottom and make the vinegar very red. This will happen because the vinegar will make the sugar wet and it will clump, It will get red because it’s clear and the sugar has food coloring. After we combined both of the things, My group had lots of observations. Our observations were that the vinegar kinda sucked the food coloring out of the sugar, because the sugar became a lighter red. Another observation was that most of the sugar got in a clump. Therefore our Hypothesis was confirmed.

For the third experiment my group conducted, we mixed water and colored sugar. Our Hypothesis for this was “If we mix sugar and water then the water will be red because the water is clear, and the sugar has food dye.” After the experiment we had lots of observations. Our observations were that the water has turned red because the sugar has food dye. When you mix it you can feel the sugar. Therefore our Hypothesis was confirmed.

Isaac Newton Infographic

Hello and Welcome to Rocio’s world. Today we’re going to talk about the Isac Newton Infographic I made.

In class we made infographic’s about Isaac Newton and his 3 laws of motion. To make the infographic I had to do lots of research, to see what I should add in my infographic. I researched by watching videos, reading books and by going online. I loved designing then infographic because it was fun to design it.

Here is my infographic:

Rube Goldberg #7: Final Reflection

Hello and Welcome to Rocio’s World. Today we’re going to talk about my final reflection, for Rube Goldberg.

I think Rube Goldberg was very challenging, and had lots of steps. Some steps were fun and exciting, but some were frustrating and hard.

One of the steps that challenged me the most was finding the simple task, me and my group should complete. This took us a very long time. I also think maybe this took such a long time because we were indecisive. We wanted our task to be perfect, but it also not too hard. We also couldn’t come up with ideas.

Another step that challenged me was the testing. The testing was also fun, but also challenging. The first few try’s I wasn’t tired, or frustrated. I thought it was going to work quickly… That wasn’t the case. I didn’t know what I could do, to help it work. You would test it one time, and it wouldn’t work. After the marble run, the marble would hit dominoes. The dominoes were in a circle. Even when we were walking around the room they would fall. This was very frustrating because you didn’t even touch them, and they would fall. It was also very hard to put them up, which made it even harder.  After 30 try’s we decided to change the marble run and the dvd, because it was just not working. I think this saved our lives. We also changed the dominoes from being in a circle, to a line. This also saved our lives. From the testing process, I have learned that even when thing get very hard, and frustrating, you should never give up.

Rube Goldberg #6: Testing the Machine

Hello and welcome to Rocio’s world.  Today we’re going to talk about testing my Rube Goldberg.

When me and my group got to testing we were glad, but also very tired. When we did our first try it worked better than we thought, because it was our first try. The marble run worked, then it hit the dominoes, the ball went down the ramp and hit 2 of the jenga pieces.  I found that their was a certain marble that only worked. The plastic ones we had, did not have enough force to push the dominoes down. After try 1, the next 29 try’s only got through the marble run and hit the dominoes. This made us very fusturated and annoyed. With the slightest movement, the dominoes would fall.  This got very frustrating. We didn’t even touch the table, and they would fall. It was also very hard to get the dominoes back up. We put the dominoes in a circle, which I think was also part of the problem. We tried with the marble run till’ try 30.

After we realized that the marble run dosen’t work. We changed the marble run, to a car. One of us would push the car into the dominoes. We thought this was a better idea because the car would definetly have enough force, to push the dominoes down. This made our lives so much easier. I realized that the dvd, was not going to work. I told Mia and Samara and we decided to change it to a half full, uno box. When we put that part up we had to make sure it was lined up, so the uno would hit the ball and make it go down. When we got to try 42 it almost worked. The whole machine worked it just didn’t pop the balloon. After that we realized that the needle needed to be very stiff, so it would definetly pop the balloon. We also made the balloon so blown up, it would pop at the slightest touch of the needle. We got very tired and frusturated. I kept wondering why it wasn’t working? What had we done wrong, in the process of building? Why couldn’t it work? I also thought. On try 87 we realized that the jenga pieces and the dominoes, should switch places. I thought this because the dominoes, would always have a problem pushing the ball, down the ramp. I also thought this because if you put more dominoes, their is more force (what we needed to knock down the dvd.), if u did this with the jenga pieces, it wouldn’t work.

After 88 try’s, we did it!!

Rube Goldberg #5: Sketch Museum

Hello and welcome back to Rocio’s world. Today we are going to talk about the sketch museum.

So first your probably wondering what is a sketch museum. A sketch museum is something we did in class, where everyone left their rube Goldberg sketches on their tables. You would walk around a look at everyone’s sketch’s. You would also leave feedback for them.

So the sketch museum for my group was at the worst moment. We had already tested our machine, and gotten it to work. So if their was anything that our feedback suggested us to change, we couldn’t.

The sketch museum was still fun to see what other people were doing. It was also intresting because you got to see how other people drew their sketch. The sketch museum was also very interesting because you got to see how everyone thinks their simple machine is going to work. I started thinking of things I could’ve done better.

Rube Goldberg #4: Building

Hello and Welcome back to Rocio’s world. Today we’re going to talk about building my Rube Goldberg.

When my group an I started building, we didn’t have any idea of what we were doing. We were kinda just building. But after maybe 45 minutes, we figured out kinda the “trick” of it.

So when we built the marble run (the 1st step) we didn’t know how to build it. With the pieces we had., we built it our own way When we put the dominoes up (the second step) it kept falling, with the slightest movement.. When we built the ball that went down the ramp, (the third step) it wasn’t that hard. When we put up the jenga pieces, we didn’t know if we should put up a lot or a little. We thought this because we didn’t know if the jenga pieces would be strong enough to knock each other down. When we put up the dvd’s, we had to find 1 that was fat enough on the bottom, so it would stay up but not to heavy the jenga pieces wouldn’t be able to knock them down. When we put up the other ramp with the ball, it was the same thing as the other one. The next thing we put up where dominoes. The dominoes were in a straight line, so when the ball would hit them it would fall. After we had to put a bouncy ball in front of the dominoes, so it would fall into a kinda pulley we made. Then we had to make the pulley. To make the pulley we used the bottom of a water bottle. We made 2 wholes in the middle of the bottom of the water bottle, and stuck needle in each whole. Then we put string on it and put it under 2 jenga pieces, so when the ball would fall in it, it would drop. Lastly we had to put the balloon under the pulley.

The process of building took 3:30 hours.

Overall the building was very frustrating, and also very fun!

Rube Goldberg #3: Working with a Group

Hello and Welcome back To Rocio’s World. Today we’re going to talk about how i’ts been working with a group so far, for Rube Goldberg.

So working with a group has been easy, but also hard. The easy part for me was the brainstorming part of it. I think it was easier because with 3 people, you can come up with better ideas, than with 1 person. I also think it was easier because their was more people to think about something, so you would get better ideas. The hard part about working in a group is deciding on what to do. For example for our Rube Goldberg I wanted to complete the simple task of flipping a light switch, but Samara and Mia didn’t agree. This could get frustrating at times because, you thought your idea was an awesome idea, but someone else might of not thought that.

So when we came across challenges, we would figure out how to solve them. One of the challenges that we came across was to try not repeat steps. We figured out something that would work the same, like dominoes and jenga pieces.

This process taught me that if their is a challenge I should try to find a solution. Overall I think working in a group is great, even though in can get get frustrating.

Rube Goldberg #2 : Drawing Our Sketch

Hello and welcome back to Rocio’s Story. Today we’re going to talk about How me and my group drew our Rube Goldberg sketch.

So me and my group drew our sketch yesterday. It was hard but also really fun. To help us draw this, we started on a white board, so then we could copy it down. First we talked about what we think would work. It was a really long process. Then we talked our plan out. Finally we sketched. We chose to do it on the whiteboard because we thought it would be easier, and if we change our idea we can just erase it, so our final sketch we hand in is neat. When we started sketching we decided that if one of us had an idea, they could say it and if all of us agreed then we could add it to the sketch. I think this was the hardest part. You had to think, How am I going to make this work? You doubt yourself a lot. When we drew something, someone sometimes had an idea, on how we could make it better. I think this part was really helpful because sometimes we would have ideas that would make no sense, but after a person said something we figured out how to make it make sense. After we were done with the sketch on the white board, all of us copied it down, on paper.

Our sketch we had 8 steps. So first their was a marble run. The marble went down it and hit dominoes. The dominoes would hit a ball, that would go down a ramp. When the ball went down the ramp it would hit jenga pieces. The jenga pieces would hit a dvd. The dvd woud hit another ball, that went down a ramp. The ball would hit more dominoes. The dominoes would hit a ball. The ball would go into a kinda pulley. The pulley had a needle on the bottom that would drop and pop the balloon.

Overall this experience was very challenging but very fun and interesting.
