Tech #9: Truss structures

Today we built truss structures for tech. First you had to get toothpicks and something soft. I used pieces of a carrot, as my something soft. After you had all of your materials, you had to make a cube. Here is my cube:

After my cube was built, the task was to see how many books your cube could hold. Mine could hold two. This is my cube after it collapsed:

After this you had to build your own structure, using triangles in some way. This is my structure:

Like the cube, you had to see how many books your structure could hold, before it collapsed. This structure also survived for two books. Here is my structure after it collapsed.

Overall this activity was very fun and interesting. I also enjoyed seeing other people’s structures on pallet. It was interesting to see what other people’s structures looked like and what they used as their soft material. I’m sad that tech is almost over because I really enjoyed it.

This is my last blog post, so I can’t say until my next post. Bye!

Tech #7: Steps to Making a Pendant.

While I’ve been stuck at home, I’ve gotten into making jewelry. It is a good way to pass time while being stuck at home. I got supplies to make jewelry for my birthday (March 14th). The supplies I got were different types of pliers, wire, solder, beads, chain and string (To be able to wear the pendants), a soldering iron and double sided tape.

The first thing I do is cut a wire 6-8 in long. Then I make the outside of the pendant. The kit I got didn’t come with a mandrel, so instead I use the container the beads are in. After the outside is made, I outline the outside of the pendant on a piece of paper. After that bad draw what you want in the middle of your pendant. Tape the outside of the pendant, onto the piece of paper. Then cut another 6-8 in wire. Shape this wire how you want your middle to be. Use your sketch to help you. After the wire is shaped how you want it to be, carefully un-tape the outside of your pendant. Then plug your soldering iron in and let it heat up. I solders on a plate wrapped in tinfoil, but wherever you solder, make sure there’s is nothing that could possibly be melted. After the soldering iron is heated up, place two pieces of double sided tape on the tinfoil and place both of your pieces on the tape. Cut a 6-8 in piece of solder. Carefully solder your pieces together. After you have soldered, let your pendant and the soldering iron cool.

Until my next blog post, Bye!

Tech #4: Starting to make Jewelry

In tech we started making our pendants. First step to make our pendants was to brainstorm what we wanted the design to be, for our pendants. This is my brainstorming sheet, with my pendant on it.

After this we started to learn how to make the outside of the pendant. You make this with a wire, pliers and a wooden stick, that helps you shape it in a circle shape. This process was hard on my first try, so I had to get another wire to try it again. After this you would make loops at the top of your pendant, then you would make your jump ring.

When we were done shaping the wire into a circle, and making the top part you would get double sided tape from Mr Calvert, and make your design using another piece of wire, and pliers. This part wasn’t difficult for me because I think I already had the hang of it, after I did the first step.

Finally we got solder our pendant together. I was scared at the beginning, but then I realized it wasn’t scary at all. I’m so happy with how my pendant turned out and I can’t wait to make more.

Until my next blog post. Bye!

Passion project #3

Hello and welcome back to Rocio’s Story.

Today we’re talking about my passion Project plan.

For my prototype I am planning on making a poster. As my first attempt I sketched out the outfits and I made an outline of how I want my poster to look.

This is a picture of 2/4 outfit sketches I made

This is a picture of the outline of my poster.

Passion Project #2

Hello and Welcome back to Rocio’s story.

Today we’re going to talk another the answers to the questions for my passion project.

What will you learn and make?

I will learn how to take an outfit sketch and put it into an outfit. I will make a poster with some sketches,  and outfits that will match the sketches.

Why do you want to learn and make this?

I want to learn about this because I like to sketch outfits and I want to learn how to bring it to real life.

How will you learn and make this?

I will learn about this by researching and I will make the poster with some printed pictures and a poster board.

To me success will be when I have learned how to turn an outfit sketch, into real life outfit.
