Our Field Trip to the Westchester Board of County Legislators

Did you ever wonder who makes the county laws and helps manage your school district? My class and I went to the Westchester county Board of Legislators. Where we got to see a courtroom and committee meeting place. During our field trip we learned about our legislators, we learned about how they vote on ideas in committees, we also learned about how they help manage all the schools in Westchester and vote on whether to make a bill a county law. To keep learning more about our field trip, keep reading my blog post.

During our field trip I learned a lot about the legislative branch of Westchester county. For example, two things I learned about the legislative branch of the county were, that in a committee meeting you decide whether to make an idea into a bill. If the majority of the committee votes yea the bill is presented to the rest of the legislators, I also learned that when voting on a bill all of the legislators have different roles like a clerk who calls attendance the public speaker and all 17 of the district chairmen provide their opinion on the bill the chairman of the entire county also provides his opinion but he is also in charge of the meeting. We got to meet Legislature Boykin (the chairman of the fifth district of Westchester which is where we live) in person. These are two of the many things I learned during our field trip to the board of Westchester county legislators.

During our field trip I got to be the chairman of a committee and a district court legislator. My favorite thing about being a chairman of a committee was that I got to call on the other participants in the committee to provide their opinion about whether to make an idea that was presented to us a law. I also liked that I got to call them by their role and their name. I liked this because it made me feel like a real chairman. My favorite thing about being a legislator while voting on a bill in the courtroom was that I got to have my own desk with my own microphone. I also liked the fact that I got to provide my opinion on the bill about banning junk food from the school district. Due to all the reasons that I mentioned earlier, I very much enjoyed our field trip to the board of Westchester county legislators. I liked it because it felt like I was a real legislator.

In summary I had a lot of fun on our field trip to the board of Westchester County legislators. I learned a lot about how our county laws are made. I also learned a lot about the process in which a bill becomes a law. I hope that you learned about how an idea becomes a bill and then a county law. Which piece of information about the Westchester board of county legislators that I previously stated did you find most interesting?

First Week of 5th Grade

Did you know that the tallest tower of cards was approximately 25 feet tall and used about 78,000 cards? In class we had to make the tallest tower possible out of 100 index cards but we only had 1 minute to build . The tallest one we made was almost 15 inches! In this blog post you will learn about things I enjoyed this past week, more specifically the index card challenge and the 20 x 9 challenge. You will also be learning about the things I’m looking forward to, such as the science unit about the solar system and the fantasy book clubs.

There are many things I have enjoyed during the past weeks of school such as the Index card challenge and the 20 x 9 challenge. These two things were some of my favorite things we did these past few days. In the index card challenge, we had to figure out how to build a sturdy structure consisting of (at most) 100 index cards. I found this especially enjoyable because it was hard but it also pushed us to work together and not give up. For example, when it seemed like it was going to be impossible to create a tower using only 100 index cards, we worked together to find a better design. The 20 x 9 was a math assignment in which we had to figure out how to get an answer of 20 using only 6 of the same numbers. These numbers consisted of every integer from 1 to 9. For example, we had to find out how to make 20 using 6 sixes or less. This was fun for me due to the fact that it was not only challenging but it was also fun trying to figure out a solution to the challenge presented to us.

There are several things later in the year that I think that I will enjoy, for example. Two things later this year that I am looking forward to are our first science unit and the fantasy book clubs. The first science unit is going to be about stars and the solar system. I am excited about this because it is a topic that I like to learn about and find very interesting. In the fantasy book  clubs we are going to get to read a fantasy book with a partner and write notes about it. I am excited for this because I like to read and take notes. Another reason that I am excited for the fantasy book clubs is that last year when we had book clubs I found it very enjoyable to read a book then write about my noticings about it with my partner, for example last year we used an app called Jamboard to jot notes about books that we were assigned to I hope that this year’s experience will be as enjoyable as last years.

In summary there are many things these past few weeks that I have enjoyed. And there are many things I’m looking forward to this year. We have done lots of fun things and there are many more to come. Which of the things that previously stated in this article would you enjoy?

Ignite Talk Reflection

For my ignite I had to find info about the extreme weather I was assigned I had to look on websites like Epic and Kiddle to find info about my extreme weather (blizzards) and write them in my reading notebook then I had to organize them based on what kind of jot they were for example history, fact, or statistic we had to write a specific topic about our extreme weather.

One challenge for me was finding a specific topic the one I picked at first (what makes a snowstorm a blizzard) was okay but I could hardly find any information for it, so because I had already organized all my information and jot based on what kind of jots they were I had to find which type of jot I had the most of  the one I had the most of was the most severe blizzards in history like the Iran blizzard and the Children’s blizzard so I made my new research topic how deadly are blizzards. One thing that was not that challenging for me was making my presentation exactly 105 seconds at first it was a little hard finding out which facts to delete but after I did that and put my narrative into my script and I first timed it was exactly 105 seconds.

The part of this ignite that I loved was learning about blizzards a lot of the facts I learned were really cool and surprising the part that I didn’t like as much was deleting my fact to make room for my thoughts on the process. I feel like I really included my reflection on the process in my ignite. I feel like the hardest part was deleting my research to make room for my reflection on the process. Overall I’m proud of my final product.

PERSUASIVE WRITING PROCESS

MY REFLECTION ON THE PROCESS

I chose war for my topic because I read a book about war and nuclear weapons and how much harm they cause. It was hard thinking about counter opinions and other points of view and saying how I agree and disagree with them. Something that was easy for me was searching up statistics and researching. I thought recording would be the longest and hardest part but it was really fast. Making the script was harder than I thought I thought It would be fine if I just copied my essay into my script but I had to get rid of a lot I went from 28 slides to 14 slides. I really hated making the slides in adobe it was hard finding pictures and making sure they went with what I was saying also my script didn’t have the correct numbers for the slides so it was a pain making the slides. Making the essay was pretty easy because I already knew a lot about my topic and had many ideas of what to write. I chose my topic because I want people to think about what could be going on in other parts of the world maybe they didn’t learn anything from my essay but at least they would realize how lucky we are to not live in a war zone or a war torn country. My favorite part was recording because I didn’t have to think of anything I just had to talk. I’m proud of my final project.

MY ESSAY ON WAR

Did you know that 40 million people were left homeless, enslaved, or imprisoned a lot of innocent people mostly Jews had their houses bombed about 750,000 new houses had to be rebuilt. I feel like the human race should live in peace and stop killing each other. We should recognize that we all want the same things out of life. We all want freedom and we can get that if we settle arguments without violence. We are saving many lives and are making the planet a better place by stopping war. Let’s  decide  not to have war, and everyone will win.

In my opinion, nuclear weapons shouldn’t be used, they are too powerful and destructive. We use nuclear weapons to affect the entire population, not just the military or government. It is our goal to harm our enemy’s population, and kill innocent citizens .This is wrong. I get that someone might think that nuclear weapons are a great way to make another country surrender but that will probably just start nuclear war. When we start nuclear war, horrible things happen. Like nuclear winter, ruined crops, natural resources are destroyed, other horrible things will also happen, and many innocent lives will be lost. Also nuclear weapons are used to affect the entire population so people who agree with you or have nothing to do with the war will die. Another example is nuclear weapons harm the environment and lead to a major population loss.

Governments are taking war lightly they don’t care if their people die, they just want to destroy their enemies and don’t think about what would happen if they fought a war with them you might argue that it’s good to destroy your enemies and get them out of the way, but there’s no guarantee that they would surrender and terrible things like  food shortages would happen. Governments are spending too much money on war and not education, I get that you might argue that we need weapons and military for protection, but I think that we should protect our selves without killing millions, if we spend too much money on war we won’t have enough money for natural resources and other important things. Governments are using nuclear weapons as a plan A  it’s their first decision when another country declares war on them, we should never use nuclear weapons or it should be our final decision. When we have nuclear war there can be food shortages and other horrible things we should think about this before we start or get involved in war.

When we have nuclear war no one wins as long as both sides have nukes, you might think this isn’t a big deal but it is. Things like major  population loss, and crops failing can happen if governments don’t  think before starting nuclear war. When governments don’t think before starting nuclear war they are putting billions of lives in danger. When we start nuclear war we are wasting money if we spend to much money we could change the way we live in the U.S. we could also put thousands of lives in poverty. Nukes destroy the environment and if we destroy the environment too much we could run low on natural resources and die. By starting nuclear war we are just making an enemy weaker but your country will be losing money, losing food, losing people, and losing important natural resources, but if we decide not to start nuclear war we are saving billions of lives and you are helping yourself by saving money and giving peace to yourself and all your citizens.

I hope you now see how bad war is. It’s time to make a difference, you can help by donating money to war torn countries and if  where you live has a high chance of being bombed you can help build shelters for people who have no protection from the bomb. I think everyone should recognize that we are not accomplishing any thing by starting war. In war you lose and so does everyone else. War is a total waste of time and money and it’s about time someone understands that.

Infographic on Uganda

One reason I chose Uganda as my country is because it is poor and I want people to see how people in poor countries live. Not everyone lives the way people in the U.S. live. I want people to see what poor unfortunate people have to do. Making the infographic would be a total breeze if adobe wasn’t so glitchy. It was easy finding facts and statistics I learned a lot while doing it, but it was hard turning that information into bar diagrams and pie charts, that’s why I found other infographics and added them to my infographic. First I found information and jotted notes on a sheet of paper them I transferred that into my social studies notebook then I started turning that into an infographic I tried to make sure I had more pictures than words. I didn’t enjoy grouping things in adobe it was hard. I’m happy with my final project though I feel like I could have less words.

My Expert Book: Space

I came up with my idea by thinking of topic that I know a lot about and am interested in. One reason I reason I regret making a really long book is that I had to keep track and organize my papers but it was really fun making my expert book. I had no problems with the slide show it was a lot of fun especially the pictures they made it feel so different from the paper copy. Writing the book a lot of fun although I had trouble thinking of chapter topics. I needed some help with the About the Author I couldn’t think of any ideas for it. My favorite part was researching and reading articles from the Heathcote Databases then putting it into my own words. I learned a lot when I was researching. I learned how to organize my research by using statistics, facts, expert terms, lists and quotations. I learned that I can write a long book and keep my research and my writing organized. I think my final project or at least what I have completed yet is really great and informative. I am proud of my final project!

This is my expert book.

Thank you for reading!

Personal Narrative Reflection

I enjoyed the revision process. It was amazing and fun! Typing was something I couldn’t do well YET, but I had grit and pushed through. Now, I can type with both hands! I chose my narrative because it was a fun time in my life and I thought it would make a terrific story. I had a lot of ideas to write about and I remembered a lot of details for narrative stories. I hope we can do personal narratives again! This is now my favorite kind of writing. Writing the heart of my story for a bit I felt like I couldn’t expand it and that my story idea was too short, but finally it came to me and I feel like I wrote a great story. Overall, I had a great experience writing my personal narrative story.

Lunch at Capriccio

“Are we there yet”, whined my little brother he was getting impatient. I couldn’t wait to see Paras at Capriccio, a restaurant in Croton on the Hudson. It felt like forever until we got there, boy Croton on the Hudson was far!.

We met Paras there. I quickly grabbed a seat next to him and plopped down into it.

“How was your summer?”, questioned Paras’s dad

“Good,”I answered. Paras went to little league over the summer and now he loves baseball. Next we ordered food and pushed two tables together so there would be enough room for my family and Paras’s family.

There was a pot of flowers buzzing with insects. There were so many I could practically feel the wind of their wings beating. There were many different kinds of bugs there were hornets, wasps and beetles. Their buzzing noise was so loud I’d bet you could hear from the other side of the building. I was starting to wish that we had picked another spot.

Finally the food arrived.I asked Paras about Rey. I met him this summer and we went to summer camp together. Paras and Rey are friends. We ordered pizza, pasta, gnocchi and cheesy garlic bread! Hari and Yush didn’t want tomato pasta so we ordered butter pasta. “I want fries“,said Yush and before anyone could say anything he grabbed a bunch of fries and dumped them on his plate. We all laughed! After we ate lunch in Capriccio in Croton on the Hudson we went to Blue pig, an ice cream place also in Croton on the Hudson it is my favorite ice cream place. We went in separate cars. Paras picked garden mint and I got maple and wet walnuts. Blue pig they always have different flavors depending on what’s fresh and seasonal. It was awesome! It was great having lunch at Croton on the Hudson with Paras and I can’t wait to come again!
