A Night Divided by Jennifer Nielsen

In the book A Night Divided by Jennifer Nielsen, Greta is a rebellious protagonist. Greta is a young girl who has to deal with the fact that her brother and father are separated from her mother, her other brother, and herself. However, Greta doesn’t want to believe she is forever separated from two of the people she loves. This book takes place in communist Eastern Germany in the early years of the wall being up. Greta lives in East Germany in a family of 5. Her brother and father took a trip to West Germany the day before the wall went up and haven’t been back since, over 4 years. Furthermore, for the past 4 years Greta has had absolutely no communication with her father or brother. However, one day she sees them over the wall and believes her father is telling her to dig to the other side. She doesn’t tell anyone of this encounter, as she knows people such as her mother would tell her how dangerous and immature that would be. “ and While Greta’s mother and her friends tell her to just do as people say, Greta wants to reunite her family. She is a rebellious little girl who is afraid of very little. Out of all of the characters introduced in the first 60 pages of the book, very few of them truly want to fight to get out of East Germany, and one of those people is Greta, who is a 12 year old little girl. It is very clear that Greta is unique, which leads her to be a protagonist. During this period of history, East Germany is a very terrifying place where very few people would ever want to be. And the people who currently live there can’t get out, unless they want to risk their lives. Greta is one of those people. Greta understands the lies the people of East Germany are feeding her, such as that East Germany is doing much better than West Germany, communism is the best way to go, etc. Greta knows this is false and her gut tells her she should try to escape. “If I knew we’d make it… I’d try to cross. But that’s all the bravery inside me”(pg. 36). Thus, although Greta may know people may not want her to even think about getting to the other side, she is demonstrating an astounding amount of resilience and bravery in even thinking about escaping to the other side. However, she knows that if she is going to be happy, it will be as a free girl. Sometimes, you have to go against the crowd and be bold in order to achieve your goals and be great. This is what Greta is attempting to do in this situation. She wants others to understand that against all odds, as a 12 year old, she has the courage many 30 year olds wouldn’t even think about. This is what it takes to accomplish big things in life.
