Reading to Learn

In this unit, the boys and girls will read to learn by choosing topics they are already interested in. This unit highlights essential skills geared towards nonfiction texts. Reading with a pencil, find the main idea and supporting details, determining importance, figuring out new vocabulary, and comparing and contrasting information learned are all skills taught in this unit. Students begin this unit by filling their book baggies with nonfiction books about topics they are interested in. Students will learn that nonfiction reading takes is different than reading fiction. In addition, students will synthesize information. They will begin to realize how parts fit together.
