Grade 7 Technology #7 – How It’s Made

Today for Technology class, I watched a video that shows the steps to how skateboard wheels are made. The video was pretty complex, and it showed what properties a skateboard wheel needed to have, which is what I will discuss today. The skateboard wheels start out as a piece of aluminum. The aluminum is cut into a two or one part mold. Liquid plastic is then put into the mold, and they bake the plastic to get rid of any bubbles, and is cooled until the plastic is hard. The plastic is the wheel, not the aluminum. The next step is that it is cut to a rounded shape so it is easier to ride on the road, and graphic designs are added on to the wheel. Before they are shipped, they are tested for their strength. Different wheels have different hardness, but they all have to be really hard to break, to maintain the rider’s safety. The property a skateboard wheel does not have is ductility, because it’s not supposed to deform when the person is riding the skateboard. Also, The wheels cannot be brittle, because if the shatter, the rider will lose control and probably get injured.
