The 2016 Summer Olympics is getting closer by the second, and a big announcement just been made. The Olympics are to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. But Brazil is in a bad stage, and they promise to tidy up Rio before the big event. But can Brazil live up to their big promise? Continue Reading to find out!
One issue is a horrible Zika virus carried by mosquitoes. “The U.S. Olympic Committee says anyone worried about the virus should consider skipping the Games,” states Time For Kids magazine. The water in Rio is getting more and more polluted as we speak. The waters have tons of litter such as plastic bags. These harmful chemicals harm fish and other sea animals as well as humans. Sailing and windsurfing events are to take place in Guanabara Bay, where there is much pollution. Rio says there will be a change, but can they do it in time for the Games? Over 4,000 families were removed from their homes to make room for the Olympics. Brazil’s government offered the families low money or homes in other locations, and some took the offer, while others refused to be pushed out of their homes. Though it turned out the same for them, with their home shredded into pieces. One more problem is that protesters are calling for the removal of Brazil’s current President Dilma Rousseff. Rousseff is accused of badly managing the country’s earnings. Investigators are suspicious of sneaky activity done by other government officials. It sounds to me like Brazil is in bad shape to host the world’s largest sporting event. What do you think? Comment your thoughts in the comment section below!
