My Capstone Interview

In 5th grade I am doing this project called Capstone to learn all about check out my last blog post by clicking this link. Now that I know my Main Inquiry question and my sub-questions I need to pick someone to Interview. The first person I was thinking to interview was my grandpa. My grandpa’s name was Jose Marino, he was an architect that worked for Estudios de Artichtectura Marino (in Spain) and he knew a lot about Roman architecture so I thought it was a good choice but I still was thinking for someone else I can do for a second interview. Then I called my grandpa to ask if I can interview him and he said … yes! I was so excited. The next step I had to do was make some questions for the interview. I had no idea how hard this was. I don’t know why but I just couldn’t come up with good questions. Then when I came up with a few questions I got so many ideas for some questions it was like all my questions ideas were stuck in my brain then they got unstuck. And also since my grandpa speaks Spanish I would have to translate all my questions from English to Spanish. And I would also have to translate my interview recording to Spanish so my information from my interview would not go into my research organizer in Spanish. And then all my ideas got stuck in my head again so I decided to look at my notes, see what information I needed, then made some questions to get the information I was missing. Then  I was done. Just kidding I still had to organize my questions, get them approved then translate them. Then I went to organize my questions and then I realized I had way too many questions so I had to take out the questions that I really didn’t need. Then all my questions were organized.  Then all I had to do was get them approved then translate them. Then the next day I asked my teacher if my questions were good and she said yes. These were my questions.

  1. Why did you want to become an architect?
  2. What were some of the things that surprised you about Roman architecture?
  3. What is your favorite Roman innovation and why? How did it work?
  4. Is there any innovation that you would have built if you were in Roman times? Why and how would it work?
  5. What were some things required to become an architect and were these things also necessary to become a Roman architect?
  6. How did the vault, the dome and the arch work?
  7. Other than the dome, arch and vault what were some other innovations, if any, to help build big buildings that the Romans created? How did they work?
  8. What materials did you use that Romans used and why?
  9. What were some superior materials that the Romans used and why were they superior?
  10. Other than the sewers and the aqueducts, what were some innovations, if any, that helped the Romans have such a big population?
  11. How did the ports of Rome contribute to the empire so much?
  12. What innovations did the Romans use to Mine?
  13. What were some of the roles for the small buildings and the big buildings that the Romans built?
  14. Is there anything else that is important about Roman architecture that we have not mentioned in this interview?

Then on May 9 2021 I would have my interview. When it was May 9 2021 I got ready for my interview. Then I called him at 11:00 am. Everything went really well in the interview. I asked the questions then some follow up questions. Then I finished the interview but I was still not done. Now I had to translate and summarize my interview. This didn’t take me very long to do. Some facts I learned from my interview are: Romans mined with water but only in open air mines. The dome and vault were all just an upgraded version of the arch. They did much more than just gladiator battles in the Colosseum; they did races with quadrigas and more in the Colosseum.

  1. I really like your blog post because it explains what steps you went through for the interview and also what challenged you. Great Job!

  2. You did a great job writing this, I liked how you put a link to the first one, and I also liked how you described what happened.

  3. I like how you said what time where and when. I also liked how you made a joke. Another thing is when you explained that you had to translate English to Spanish and Spanish to English.

  4. Great Job! I really liked how you told us your thinking! I can’t wait to see your final project!
