Blog post #5 Capstone Essay

I have finished my essay it would be a little bit hard sometimes but I have now finished it.

In today’s society, almost every person, school, and company uses WiFi. WiFi is short for Wireless Fidelity. WiFi is a wireless networking technology that allows computers, mobile phones, iPads, game consoles, and other devices to communicate over a wireless signal. There are many different pros and cons of using WiFi.

Early developments of WiFi started in 1971 at the University of Hawaii. In 1993 Henrik Sjödin talked about his idea of public access. While he does not use the term “hotspot”, this is considered the first mention of the concept. In Scarsdale, the school district did not have individual Apple “Airport” hubs in elementary schools until the 2000s. Scarsdale started building-wide WiFi infrastructure in the buildings around 2012. There is wireless access everywhere in the Scarsdale Schools now.

The pros for WiFi is that it is very efficient for users who are located close to the WiFi signal since it’s very quick. WiFi is also very convenient. When a person connects to a wireless network they get all the internet access they could possibly want. WiFi can also be cheap. Public WiFi can be free if a person wants to use it. Of course, since it’s wireless there are no wires and WiFi gives a person everything they need while using their device.

The cons of WiFi are something a user should definitely be careful of. A user should always make sure they are on safe WiFi. On many public WiFi networks, users can get hacked and cyber criminals can look at a person’s private information. It is also super frustrating for a user when a WiFi network isn’t working and they need to try to get something done. It can also become addicting if a person always has access to WiFi. People often communicate more on a device than in person.  A user should also be careful about how devices/WiFi can affect their lives. There is no evidence that WiFi causes illnesses but excessive use of devices can lead to insomnia, meaning that it is difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Some tips for a person to be more safe while using WiFi are to try to stay away from WiFi when possible, and avoid being around WiFi for long periods of time. When people are sleeping, their devices should be kept far away from them. Users could also turn off the WiFi signal in their house before they go to bed, which might help them sleep better because they are not using their devices. People can also use an electronic card which gives the user safe internet access. Using a wireless card makes sure that the users are on a secure wireless network so no one can hack into the WiFi. Finally, people should not keep their devices in their pockets so that no damage can happen to them.

To conclude, there are pros and cons to WiFi but I feel that the pros outweigh the cons. WiFi is efficient, inexpensive, and fast. Yes, there are cons to WiFi but if a person uses secure networks, turns off their WiFi once in awhile, and keeps their devices away from their bodies, the benefits of WiFi are clear-cut. WiFi is a part of everyday life. Just think about it, how many people do you know that do not use WiFi?
