In tech class, we learned about CNC machines. They are largely responsible for all of the products we have. CNC machines are automatic machines that use computers to do tasks repeatedly. They are the reason we are able to mass produce. Without CNC machines, everything you had would have to be hand-crafted. That would mean that things would be a lot more expensive, because someone has to spend a lot of time making it, and also would mean that we couldn’t have as many products because you couldn’t mass produce them. There’s also the fact that humans are imperfect. We make variations in our designs, and we obviously can’t make things perfectly. A lot of the times, things need to be perfect. For example, an airplane needs to have a perfect balance on its wings to fly well. If you made one of an airplane’s wings too small, it would slant, and it might crash. It also just allows us to have much nicer quality products that are available for more people, because you can effectively make many products cheaply and mass-produce them. Overall, CNC machines are a thing that has changed life as we know it. In our last tech project of the year, we are using a CNC machine called a laser cutter. I’ll talk more about that in my next post.
