Rocketry Blog Post #4

135 ft. That’s how high our second rocket went. Not nearly as high as our first rocket. I’m a little frustrated but it’s alright it still went high. At least now we know that a towering nose cone does not do us any favors.

If we could try again I think the rocket should have had a different material for the fins that could have made it lighter, therefore, making it go higher.  I wish that I could have known this before building the second rocket I didn’t learn much from the first rocket so that might have been what made the second rocket not develop from the first one.

If I ever wind up doing rocketry again at least I know precisely what not to do.

This is our second attempt at building a successful sounding rocket. This time we were only allowed to change one part of our rocket the body, fins, etc.

My group and I decided to change the nose cone because we think that it will make our rocket design more aerodynamic. For our initial rocket we made the nose cone really short so this time we are going to make it taller. We also think that will make the biggest impact on how high or low our rocket goes.

It was the same process as last time for the body we rapped the oaktag around a skinny PVC pipe and then to fasten it we wrapped it in blue and gray electrical tape. For the nose cone, we made it out of colored paper and we made the fins out cardboard. We attached everything with hot glue and electrical tape.

We can’t wait for the launch we hope it goes even better than last time!

The rocket launch was a lot different than expected. I never thought that the rockets would go that high!

My groups rocket went so high when it came back down It made a hole in the ground and completely crushed our nose cone. We used special increments called clinometer to measure the height.

After we graphed it turns our rocket went … 143 ft.! it went so high! I can’t wait for our second time at trying to build one that will even higher than our first design.

When I found out that we were going to do a unit on rocketry i got so excited, I could not wait to start. I had always loved science I had been waiting to do this since 3rd grade when I first heard about it!

Designing the rocket was the hardest part, we kept disagreeing on how tall it would be, fin shape ,the amount of fins, ect. we finally came to a conclusion for it to be 16 in. tall, pointy and skinny nose cone and 3 fins the body. We thought this would be the most aerodynamic design for our rocket. But we didn’t want it to be light or the wind would knock it of course.

We made the nose cone pink  and attached it to the body of our rocket with white tape then we raped the body of our rocket with black tape and attached the fins with hot glue and tape to insure they wouldn’t fall off during the launch.

I can’t wait to see how high it goes!

Colonial America – pt 3 – Building the Colony

In class we are making models of our colonies and we finished! I’m so exited it looks great and my character ( Emma Watson ) is writing a lot about it here is one of the diary entries she wrote…

June 25 1774

We have finished building our colony! of course we will expand over time but for now it is perfect. Everyone has a good home we have a farm we have, meeting house, church, temple school and well, we also have a live stock stable a doctors office and a dock. We had many hardships that postponed the building process but we made it before winter! I can’t believe it! We did it!!! I’m so excited! This day can’t get any better!

Colonial America Pt – 2 – Persona

My name in the colony is Emma Watson and I am 14. I had a lovely life in England, and I had many friends, but I wanted to go on an adventure! I was longing for something new. So I went on the ship to New Fouresten (that’s the name of our colony).  I loathed the ship ride there but it gave me time to make friends, for we were all going to New Fouresten! When we got there I was so exited we were on a new land that very few walked on. It was a new adventure, the shores seemed to be lined with gold and the water sparkled before me, it was amazing! I am the apprentice of the governor and one day hope to become the governor of New Fouresten. As  the governors apprentice my job is to help the colony with there problems I will start with dreadful jobs then i shall get better jobs more important jobs. I will be working with my master until I am 21.  I have a few past times that I like to do with my friends such as horse back riding, hoop and stick and ring toss. Some of my jobs out side of apprenticeship were making meals and fetching water.

Colonial America – Pt 1 – Overview

In Colonial America we were separated into different colonial regions Middle Colonies, Southern Colonies and New England Colonies. I am in the Middle Colony which we renamed New Foresten, in the middle colony we have New York, Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania in our region. In the Colony I am the governors apprentice, in my group M is the Governor O is the Farmer/cartographer V is the Trader S is a child R is a Doctor and Ra is the Hunter/Solder.  This project is so much fun I can’t wait to do more in the colony!

How I Chose My Topic For My Passion Project

I chose climate change for my passion project because that one of the problems that I am most passionate about.  I think that everyone should know about what is happening so that we can stop it, we can stop climate change if more people know about it and how bad it is if we just sit around and do nothing nothing will change and I think one of the biggest things that we need to change is climate change. When I was writing about it in my notebook, I got so so angry with how bad people were treating this earth and making climate change so bad and there are some people that don’t think it’s real! and boy they will be sorry when it hits them. and there I go again getting angry, you see what I mean. I don’t try to, but it all comes spilling like lava out of an erupting volcano out of me so what’s better then that! , and when I got really angry my words started to look like this. So I thought if this is going to be a passion project I should be passionate about my topic, right? So that’s how I chose my topic for the passion project.

only one you

Today in class we read Only One You I really liked the message and how the the author made it all fit together really nicely, it had so many things packed into that little picture book! It talked about  sustainability, it showed conformity and nonconformity, for example on the cover it show a school of fish going one way and one fish going the other way. That fish was being a nonconformist. The message almost sounded like the song “Heal the World” by Michael Jackson too! it had so many great messages. I really, really liked the book and I would recommend it to anyone!

plant post #3

Hi! This is the 16th day of our plant growing unit and I’m back with some exciting news! drum roll please… we’re cross pollinating! You may be thinking, what is that? did that really deserve a drum roll? And some of you might be really lost and saying huh? But i’ll tell you why it’s so exciting. When bees and other bugs (in this case it’s us that are the pollinators) get pollen on them and land on the pistil (the thing in the middle of a flower) of a flower then the pollen fertilizes the little seeds inside the pistol then the flower loses its petals and the pistol gets bigger and bigger than a seed pod comes out (that’s whats holds the seed). O.k now that you know what’s so exciting I’ll tell you how the plants are doing.

the average height for both manipulated and controlled is 9 to 14 and something really interesting happened to manipulated some of the buds are red! But the stems are green. Controlled is just green.  My prediction is that by next week at least one plant will be 20 cm.  I’ll update you on the plants at the next post!
