Warriors in a Crossfire 4

In the Book, Warriors in a Crossfire by Nancy Bo Flood, the idea of not losing spirt when all is lost is a recurring theme. This theme is very important to the story and is one of the main ideas. If the main character and other characters lost their hope and their spirt then they probably wouldn’t have survived, and if they did, they would have been in much worse conditions. One example of the theme is

My sister lay around her son. Her backbone was a sharp ridge along the curve of her back, her limbs were so thin, and her skin, rough as dust. My sister, my mother, my nephew; they were barely more than dusty bones. They needed water… I turned and pushed through the branches. I didn’t care who heard me. Shoot me. But I must find water. My family needs water.

This shows the theme because even though it feels like all is lost for Joseph still has faith, and keeps trying. He never gives up on his family even if it means he has to put himself in danger. Earlier in the book, Joseph thought he wasn’t ready to take care of his family by himself but he was ready. Joseph’s sister loses all hope after she hears that her husband has died. She doesn’t care if she dies or lives, and only cares about her son. It was necessary for Joseph to not lose faith because if he did he and his family would probably die because they would think that they were going to die anyways. Having hope is very important in the face of danger and can be the difference between life and death.. People who lose hope and faith in bad times often lose it all.
