Getting Ready to Make Automatas

For our final project in technology, we are making automata. An automata is a state machine or a mathematical model of computation. An example of an automata is when you turn a crank and a float moves up and down continuously. Automata are usually made with materials like wood or cardboard and not with a hard material like metal or iron. I am thinking of making an automata with a leg swinging back and forth. This will require a big cam (a cardboard circle) which acts as a gear. I will attach a wooden dowel to one side of the circle, turn a crank which is attached to a circle and will make it move, and then when the circle rotates, the leg will swing back and forth. I am looking forward to making my automata and wonder how it will end up working.
