Day 13: Dorothy and Toto Visit Ms. Forte’s Room!

Dear Edgewood School,

This morning I woke up in the cold, squishy wet grass surrounded by the lovely fifth graders in Mrs. Pinto’s class.  I had such a strange dream last night.  The students said I was mumbling something about Mr. Gluck’s class taking me to Oz and killing the Wicked Witch but they said it was all a dream.  It did seem so realistic…

The last thing I remember was searching for my friends in the field of grass.  The fifth graders in room 20 took such good care of me and brought me into their warm, cozy classroom.  They gave me some eye drops and tissues to help get rid of the pollen in my eyes.

They reunited me with the munchkins I met when my house landed on the Wicked Witch of the East and they declared me the “Queen of Edgewood.”  The lollipop guild gave me a blue and white lollipop with an E on it.

I helped the fifth graders find exterior angles during math and also did some some fiction writing with the class.  I learned the Wolf’s side of the the story from the book, The Three Little Pigs. In this version, the pigs seem so rude.

Since I didn’t have sneakers on, Mr. Weigel said I couldn’t play soccer with the class, but I kept score. It was a very exciting game.  The game ended in a tie, so they had to have a shootout.  At the end the pinney team won by one goal.  GO EDGEWOOD!!!

The fifth graders told me about the Talent Show and I went to rehearse with the girls and Mrs. Pagel during lunch.  I can’t believe how talented they are!

The girls said that if I practice hard enough, I will be able to join them for the Talent Show this week!  Oh how I love to sing and dance!

I asked if I could invite my friends, the lion, the scarecrow and the tinman to the Talent Show… but I still haven’t been able to find them.  Mrs. Pinto’s class said that they will make VIP passes for The Tinman, Scarecrow, Lion, Toto and I.  Hopefully, the Wicked Witch won’t show up!  I heard that the boys in room 20 are also going to be in the Talent Show. I can’t wait to see them all perform!

The girls gave me a makeover at lunch.  I hardly recognized my reflection in the mirror.

After lunch, the students worked so diligently on their Capstone notes.  I remember learning about this project in Mr. DelMonaco’s class.

During music, we learned about the opera. We used Garageband to work on our music pieces. I was in the group with Maya and Izzy. I had the best time.

What a marvelous day I had with the boys and girls in room 20, but I sure hope that I find my friends soon.  I’m off to practice with Mrs. Pagel for the Talent Show!.

Love,

Dorothy

Day 12: The Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Lion Visit Ms. Huang’s Class!

Good Morning Room 53,

We finally met our friends this morning. They were waiting for us in our room. The Tin Man, Scarecrow and Lion were smiling at us when we walked to our seats. After reading about where they have been we decided to use the “Tracking Device” that was made to help find Dorothy.

We left the room with the device hoping that it would beep and lead us to Dorothy. We went down to the Kindergarten classrooms, outside to the playground and looked inside many windows. We could not see Dorothy anywhere!!!

We decided to come back and come up with a different strategy to help our friends reunite with Dorothy. We split up into three groups to brainstorm  ideas to help with our search. One idea was to design a strong magnetic field like the ones we did when we designed our Maglev Trains.

  • Put a magnet with a really strong magnetic pull on Dorothy and one on the Tin Man, Scarecrow and the Lion. The magnetic force will automatically bring them together. No matter where they are at Edgewood.
  • Plant a magnet inside a dog biscuit so Toto will find it and eat it. Don’t worry it won’t hurt him. Dorothy does not go anywhere without Toto so once he eats it the magnetic field will be in place.

Thank goodness we learned about Magnets and the Maglev System. We hope this works for you guys.

Good Luck!!!

Day 11: Dorothy and Toto Visits Mr. Gluck’s Room!

Dear Room 15,

Phew! What a day we had with the boys and girls of room 14!   There was a Wizard named Jack there. I thought he might get us back to Oz, but he was only interested in talking about someone named Godzilla, his capstone project topic (whatever that is).

I learned about something called angles in Mr. DelMonaco’s math class. I even helped to teach the class.

It was raining out today. I was hoping that a twister might pick up the school and get me back to Kansas, but no luckL.

Next, we went to Mr. Weigel’s PE class.  Oh, and there is a girl named Em in Mr. D’s class, just like my Aunty Em! That sure made me homesick, but we had so much fun playing, I forgot about my troubles for a while.   It’s sure hard playing kickball in these ruby slippers! Luckily, the class got me some Air Jordans!

I needed some water after that!

Some of the girls made a beautiful bow for Toto!

Of course I would love to go back to Kansas, but I’m starting to realize that…

Love,

Dorothy

Day 11: The Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Lion visit Ms. Tyrrell’s Room!

Dear Room 52,

When we arrived at school this morning, we were happy to see that The Tin Man, Lion, and Scarecrow were in our classroom. But we knew something was wrong. The Tin Man, Lion and Scarecrow looked extremely upset. After reading Mrs. Cucolo’s letter, we knew we had an important task ahead of us.

At 9:00, we hurried to Spanish where we found the Wicked Witch. We were so thankful that The Tin Man, Lion, and Scarecrow did not come to Spanish with us. Who knows what the Wicked Witch would have done? Luckily, we did not have to find out. When we left Spanish, we asked Señorita Houston if she could keep both of her doors locked. This would prevent  the Wicked Witch from escaping  and hurting any of our friends.

When we returned to our classroom, we began thinking like detectives and brainstormed ways to find Dorothy.

Here is what we came up with:

  • Break into groups to find Dorothy.
  • Use a hand lens and flashlight to help us look for clues.
  • Make a tracking device to find Dorothy.

First, as a class, we decided to break into two groups. After searching high and low, Ethan, our senior option student, found a clue! He noticed a blue, red, and white ribbon outside of Mr. DelMonaco’s classroom. We quickly found the rest of the class to share our wonderful news.

We all ran into Mr. DelMonaco’s room. To our surprise, we found Dorothy!! We were so happy she was safe! Next we decided it was best if Dorothy, The Tin Man, Lion, and Scarecrow split up to find the Emerald City.

Back in the classroom, we worked very hard to create a tracking device to attach to Dorothy. The Tin Man arrived at our classroom with an iphone. We connected The Tin Man’s iphone to our tracking device. We hoped that this tracking device would allow The Tin Man, Lion, and Scarecrow to always know Dorothy’s whereabouts.

As the day continued, the Tin Man, Lion, and Scarecrow helped us with our math, reading and science (though the Scarecrow wasn’t much help… If he only had a brain!) Our three friends even got to check out Edgewood’s library!

Before the bell rang, we wished our new friends good luck on their adventure to find Emerald City! We hope they keep track of Dorothy!

Day 10: The Lion, Tin Man , and Scarecrow visit Ms. Magnotta-Nedwick’s Class!

Thursday morning we found Dorothy’s friends in our classroom! Mrs. Mangiamele’s class had written us a letter to let us know that no matter how hard they tried they could not find Dorothy.  SO, we knew our mission was to try and convince Dorothy to come to us!

As a class we wrote her the following letter:

Dear Dorothy,

Do you like dancing?  Do you like music?  Do you need to see the Wizard in Emerald City?  Then come to Room 4 and we will teach you to ease on down the road!  We think if you learn to ease on down the road you can have fun with your friends on the way to see the Wizard.  You will have fun because the music is a Hip Hop remix.  You’ll love the way it sounds and it will make you want to dance!  We also think you should learn to ease on down the road because it will get you to Emerald City to see the Wizard in a jiffy – really fast!  The faster you get to Emerald City the faster you will get to the Edgewood Fair.  Your friends the Scarecrow, the Tin man, and the Lion have learned it from us and they have become experts!  They said “it really is fun and it really is fast!”  SO if you looovveee fun and music and need to see the Wizard, come to Room 4 and learn to ease on down the road!  Hurry Dorothy! Hurry!

P.S.  Mrs. Cucolo received a mysterious gift…a pair of ruby red slippers.  So don’t worry, we will all be safe from the Wicked Witch of the West.

We waited ALL DAY, but Dorothy never came. Now it’s up to YOU to try and find Dorothy before the Wicked Witch does!

Day 10: Dorothy Visits Mr. Delmonaco’s Room!

Dear Mr. Delmonaco’s class,

When we met Dorothy, she was complaining that her feet were killing her. She dreamt about going to Nordstroms to buy comfortable shoes. She thought about going to the Westchester Mall, because she knew that Nordstroms had many nice shoes. However, Nordstroms shoes are very expensive. She only had $50 and the shoes were $109.95. Dorothy needed $59.95 more. Maybe she could sell her old shoes. She found someone who bought her shoes for $80.95. Since there was no yellow brick road to follow, she was lost in Westchester, barefooted. The Good Witch appeared and directed her to Nordstroms in the Westchester Mall. Dorothy finally bought her shoes and had $21.00 left over. That would be enough money for a hot chocolate at Starbucks. While she was heading to Starbucks, she passed the Apple Store. She asked if she could trade in her iPhone 6 for the latest model. Dorothy realized she did not have enough money for a new phone. She was disappointed that she could not get the phone and made her way to Starbucks. She bought a hot white chocolate and a chocolate croissant for $6.20. Dorothy thought to herself, “Boy, this is expensive, I’m not in Kansas anymore.”  Now she still had $14.80 in her bag and bought Toto a leash for $10.00. Four dollars and eighty cents was left over. She woke up and realized she was still in the land of Oz.

Day 9: Dorothy and Toto visits Ms. Martin’s Room!

Dorothy Visits Room 12

This morning we were surprised to find Dorothy waiting inside our classroom. Mrs. Magnani’s second grade class was really excited to have a new friend in the room for a visit.

We knew Dorothy was trying to get home to Kansas. We decided to do some research about our thirty-fourth state. We learned many interesting facts about the state of Kansas. We thought it would be a good idea to make a HOME survival bag for Dorothy to carry with her while she was looking for home.

We had a big discussion about what HOME is and what it means to each of us. We wrote Acrostic poems titled HOME. We put all of our poems together, so Dorothy would have pocket poems when she is feeling sad. Next, we put all of the interesting facts we learned about Kansas together for her so she has reminders of her wonderful state and home. Then we made a tornado in a bottle. We thought this may help Dorothy reach Kansas. If you remember that is how she came to OZ. Last, we made a rainbow in a bottle. We thought if the tornado didn’t work for her then maybe the rainbow would lead her home. We included the recipes for both the tornado and rainbow in a bottle for her travels. We thought if everyone had the directions to make these for Dorothy it would really help get her to Kansas!

Please help Dorothy in  remembering the state motto for Kansas, Ad astra per aspera, which means To the stars through difficulty. If we keep encouraging her to look to the stars even though she is lost and it’s difficult  then she is sure to find her way back to Kansas. Good Luck getting HOME Dorothy!

XOXO,

Mrs. Magnani’s Second Grade

Day 9: The Lion, Tin Man, and Scarecrow visit Mrs. Cucolo’s Room!

On Wednesday morning we found the scarecrow, the tin man and the lion reviewing our daily schedule.  We then found “fake” Dorothy and thought our mission was complete.  When we opened our letter, we quickly realized that “fake” Dorothy was to trick the witch.  Our mission begins….

In the morning we read on how to be a detective, which would help us find Dorothy and evade the witch.  Scaredy Squirrel books taught us that we needed an “action plan” and an “emergency kit”.  Kevin Henkes’ main character Lilly taught us about disguises.

The Plan:

  1.    Dress up the characters.
  2.    Have a map of our school in order to know where to go and hide if necessary.
  3.    Create an anti-witch kit.
  4.    Go over the plan with everyone
  5.    Put plan into action.

LET’S GET DOROTHY AND HER FRIENDS TOGETHER AGAIN.

In the morning we searched the first floor.  In the afternoon we searched the second floor.  We didn’t find Dorothy.  Our mission failed.  It is now up to you to find Dorothy.  Good Luck!
