Capstone #4

After I got in the doctor’s office, my site visit was formatted as a sort of medical clinic. First they weighed me and measured my height. They then brought me into a room for cleansing. After waiting a little, my doctor came in and we discussed allergens. In the end, I decided to get tested on pine nut, hazelnut, and birch pollen. Then, the tester came in. She came in with a tray of about 100 small vials each with a scientific label showing the amount, IgE average, and the name. There was also a negative control of salt water and a positive control of actual histamine. They wrote 5 numbers on my left arm. 1 was hazelnut, 2 was birch pollen, 3 was positive control, 4 was negative control, and 5 was a scratch with an actual piece of pine nut. Then the nurse cleansed my arm again with heavy alcohol. Next, she scraped the numbers on my arms with the matching chemical protein. Then she left. A very surprising insight was that the hazelnut testing’s redness was very similar to the negative control. I also had a blood test. Blood tests measure the amount of IgE antibodies in your bloodstream. If this is very low, then your allergies are going away. After a little bit of talking with the doctor, we decided to take action after the IgE blood test samples had arrived and to do a food challenge. After around 15 minutes, the swelling on my arm stopped and I did my interview.
