Choosing a Capstone Topic

Capstone is finally here! I remember being in fourth grade and seeing the fifth grader’s projects. I was always so excited to get to do my own. Now, finally, I can! When you choose your topic you are required to chose something that you are passionate about. It is harder than it seems because there are just so many things that you can be passionate about. How are you supposed to choose one over the other? We answered questions on our passions to decide which we thought we felt most passionate about or interested in. I chose genetics as my capstone topic because it really intrigued me because I barely knew anything about genetics. I have so many questions, and doing capstone I can get the answers. Capstone is really fun because you get to choose absolutely any topic you want! You choose shoes, chocolate, amazon, brains, dogs or anything in between. You get to choose your own questions about your topic and then answer them by doing research, visiting a site, and interviewing someone related to your topic. I am glad that I chose genetics as my topic because capstone is about learning about something that you are interested and/or passionate about and I am very interested in genetics. Genetics is something that I have never learned about before so I am glad that capstone has given me this opportunity. Overall, I am very excited to start my capstone project on my topic, genetics.

Social Issues – Animal Treatment

I think that animal treatment is a very important issue because I personally love animals, and the fact that they are treated so badly by people is cruel. For, after all, we are animals too, why are we treating ourselves so generously and not others? We poach animals for money, or even kill them merely for sport. They deserve to live lives as easy as ours, maybe even better considering what we have done to them. What about animal fights? Not natural fights for dominance, but the fights we force them to participate in and then bet on and watch for amusement? How can we force innocent animals just like us to fight to the death? And enjoy it?

Have you ever thought what it would be like to be a lab guinea pig? No one enjoys going to the doctor and getting shots, so why would other animals just because they can’t communicate their reactions to us? When lab guinea pigs are being tested, they may benefit us, but not the testing animals. They could die from potential poisonous injections or tests. They live their life neglected, lonely, and in pain.

Extinction? There’s no doubt people are responsible for the multiple species of animals each year. Animal treatment is still a big social issue today. For instance, the last male white rhino recently passed away March 19, 2018 at Ol Pejeta Wildlife Conservancy in northern Kenya. Only two female Northern white rhinos remain and are being held at the same conservation, consequently they will most likely go extinct due to the fact that they can not reproduce. Northern white rhinos are extinct in the wild due to poaching by humans. I think that other animals are very important, let alone innocent, and that we should put more thought into how we affect other animals every day.
