Choosing a Topic

Finally, the biggest project in Heathcote is here, Capstone! I first found out about capstone when I was in first grade when my brother did his on the New York Jets. Since then I haven’t really thought of it until the beginning of this year remembering what cool thing we do in 5th grade.

Going into this year I wasn’t really thinking on what to do for capstone until people started talking about a few months ago. Even though I thought people already “new what they wanted to do,” I didn’t think I would be behind because we were talking about it very early.

When I did start thinking of what to do for capstone I thought of:

  • Not making it so broad (example: football, basketball)
  • Doing something I liked and having fun learning more about it
  • Doing something I might want to do in the future

In the end, I came down to two options. Being an NBA general manager, and sneakers. Both things I didn’t think were to broad, both things I think I would like researching, and both I would wan’t to work with in the future. To decide, I decided to do pros and cons of both.

In the end, I chose sneakers because I thought that I would find a lot more information, there are a lot of different types of sneakers, and they are one of my favorite things.

In the end, I think that I will have a lot of fun doing the capstone on them and I think I will not regret my decision.

Social issues

In class, we have been talking about a lot of social issues. I think the one that matters most to me is poverty.

Over a break, I went to a place called Nicaragua. It is in Central  America and had an earthquake, causing it to go poor. While I was driving to my hotel I looked out the window to see how bad it was. All houses were run down, small,  and had no electricity.  This meant that the people  were living in poor living conditions and there wasn’t  any money to fix it. What I also noticed was how many stray animals there were walking outside with no owners.

I think that poverty is something that you can’t stop because somethings that cause it like earthquakes you can’t control. Or maybe even just the place is poor or war has caused poverty. Even if it isn’t poor or not involved in war, natural disasters can happen which is what happened in Nicaragua.

I think that it is still a very big problem today and will always be. Plus, it isn’t just one or two places. It is a lot of places affected by poverty. In fact a study showed that about half of the worlds population is affected by extreme poverty. That is more than three billion people. This is I think that poverty is the biggest social issue.
