Rube Goldberg 3/30

Max and I decided what our plan should be. We drew a sketch of our plan which is supposed to be in Maxwell’s room. We’re going to use HexBug tracks, mini carts, Hot Wheels cars, Hot Wheels tracks, blocks, books, levers, a lot of dominoes, paper cups, string, etc. The final task will ultimately be turning off/on a light switch. We’re a little worried, though. I haven’t even been at his house yet! We didn’t really start yet. And two resources, a sketch/outline and three blog reflections are due Monday 4/4 the first day Max and I will meet! We will be cutting it close to finish is project before the deadline, but I think Max and I can do it.

Rube Goldberg 3/22

On Monday 3/21, my original group Maxwell, Michael H., Ty and Carson. After school, we went to Ty’s house to brainstorm ideas. It turns out that we actually started building!  We were kind of cheating because we used rigged dominoes from one of Ty’s games. But after a while, it started to get a little out of hand. Carson and Michael H. were not really doing any work, only Ty, Maxwell and I were really getting things done. So the next day, we decided to break up into groups of two or single groups. Max and I were the only double.

Westward Expansion Reflection

Our westward expansion unit was very fun. At first we researched the Gold Rush, the Transcontinental Railroad, the Louisiana Purchase, Lewis and Clark, Erie Canal and the Telegraph. We had a “test” to write as much as we could on those topics. Then we broke into small groups to research different topics. Jordan, Max, Melanie and I worked on the Trail of Tears. We checked out books from the library, looked things up online and put all the information on a shared google document. We had to make a game to teach our classmates about our topic. Many of the other groups’ games weren’t really factual, ours wasn’t so good either. Then we had to write five questions for our test later. Hopefully kids will pass our part of the quiz!

3/31

After our test Last Wednesday,  we took the Westward Expansion Final Assessment. It was 14 questions based on the topics we learned about. To me, they were pretty easy. I thought our Final Exam would be longer and harder. But I’m not going to complain or anything.

Debates

What Ben, Sammy, Giselle and I were debating was whether we should be more focused on protecting humans or sharks. Giselle and I were on the sharks side. We had two debates in front of the class. To prepare for everything, our teacher, Mrs. Edwards gave us articles and links for us to look at and take notes on. Before we were ready, she made us fill in a graphic organizer to help us. After the two debates, she made us write a persuasive essay about our topic. I think our topic was really made for discussing. It was a really fun argument unit.

Non-Fiction Feature Article

My NF article was a lot of work. I wrote about Barcelona. I would rather want to work on Pages. Microsoft Word was hard to work with because it was annoying having to delete all those weird pictures and random Lorem Ipsum all over the place. First I had to write my information down. Then I had to put some photos related to my text. Next I had to find a good way to present my article. I had to revise and edit my work. Then I had to revise and edit my work again until finally I was done! The process was hard but the result was worth it.
