Diary of Anne Frank: Theme

In the diary of Anne Fran, the main character Anne, her family, and another family all hide above an office building. One theme that has been brought up to my attention is the sacrifice of one person for another. After a while, Anne and her family decide that they want to rescue another person and let them hide with them. This is the act of hiding people at the risk of your own life and giving of your food, living space, and friendship to spare the lives of people around you. “We always thought there was enough room and food for one more person…”. This illustrates that in order to welcome this man into their hiding place they must sacrifice another human that is not hiding with them.

Another theme I observed in the Diary Of Anne Frank is growing up. Most of the story is about Anne and her experience growing up Jewish during World War 2. Even during the times of her crucial circumstances, she still grapples with problems that many normal teenagers deal with now. Throughout the book Annes mind continues to shift toward a more mature mindset. As Anne starts to mature both mentally and physically she starts to recognize this shift in her mindset. For example she makes a edit in her diary embarrassed by her younger self, “I wouldn’t be able to write that kind of thing anymore,”. Not only does Anne mature throughout the book, but she also starts to dive into deeper meanings of her life. She begins to develop questions like: does she feel more Jewish or German? What sort of God does she believe in? What kind of life does she want to live? This is how Anne starts to mature from a young girl into a curious young women.
