Capstone Post #4 – My Site Visit

Hello and welcome back to the Scarlett Sentinel. Today I am going to talk about my site visit for capstone. So I had my site visit at an arthroscopy lab in NYC. An arthroscopy lab is a place where doctors practice using all of the instruments that they would use in a surgery. I had it with a guy named Austin, and he is the director of the lab that I went to. When I went, there was nobody in the lab except for me, Austin and my mom. It wasn’t the best day to have it though,  because I was sick that day, but we couldn’t reschedule.

At the lab, I got to touch and use some of the tools there, such as an arthroscope. An arthroscope is a camera that goes inside a joint without making a big incision. I used the arthroscope in a box with a bunch of holes, with a springy thing in it and on that springy thing was a black thing. The springy thing was meant to be an ACL which stands for anterior cruciate ligament. The black thing was a piece to hook other tools around.

Another tool that I got to use is a shaver. It had a petal to control the way the tip spins. This was really cool because the tip could spin clockwise, counter clockwise or both. You could also switch the speed or aggressiveness of the tip.

I also got to fix a fake rotator cuff, using a punch, a scorpian and an anchor. The anchor had pieces of suture (which is thread,) in it to go around the soft tissue. The punch was used to make a hole in the bone to put the anchor in. The scorpian was used to push the suture through the soft tissue and it made a hole in the tendon.

Even though I was sick, I found this sight visit really fun and helpful!
