The Soldering Unit has just ended and I had so much fun! So I will tell you a bit about my journey! Mr.Calvert introduced soldering by telling us that we will be making a jewelry piece for someone. He told us that we had to interview someone, and ask them a few questions about themselves. I decided to interview Mr.Calvert, and made a jewelry piece for him. He told me about his hobbies, his pets, and things he really enjoys doing. Afterwards we had to make a brainstorming sheet that had many circles on it. We had to make 12 designs of things that we think our person will like, and we can only use 6 wires. To keep it simple. It was hard for me to think of designs, even though I knew what he enjoyed doing and what he liked. I eventually got all 12 down and then we had to put a star on the one we like the most and we think we are going to do. After we did the basics we started forming our base piece. This was a little ring shaped metal wire. There were so many steps, but we got it done in the end. Once we have done that we put this double sided really sticky tape on the design that we were going to do, and put our little wire ring shaped thing on top. Once that was done Mr.Calvert gave us all the wire, and we had to shape our wire to be like our design. I was making a dog, so it wasn’t too hard to shape the wire. Once we were done with that it was time to use the soldering iron. This was scary because it was at 842 degree’s Fahrenheit. Before using it though we had to put this toxic stuff everywhere where wire touches wire. Now it was time to solder. We had to grab the wand thing like a pencil, tap the tip on a wet sponge to clean it, then get the soldering iron, and put the little wand thing and the iron on each other. Then we got the soldering iron on the wand. After you place it everywhere else where wire touches wire. Then you are all done and you give it to your person. I had so much fun doing this project and I can’t wait to do the next.

We have started our laser cutting unit. In this unit we use the app Vectornator and we draw cool designs, then we send it to our teacher Mr.Calvert and with his laser cutter he cuts out our design and it becomes a cool wooden pendant, magnet, piece of jewelry, pretty much anything you want. The first thing I made with the laser cutter was a wooden banner. When we used the app Vectornator, we used the pen tool. It was really hard at first, but I ended up getting the hang of it after practicing a few times. I learned that the reason why we use Vectornator, and not any other app is because Vectornator doesn’t use pixels, and the laser cutter doesn’t work well with pixels. My banner came out really nice, and I am very happy with the final product of it. After we made this design, and got more familiar with Vectornator, we started a new project. For this project we got to make a design of our own, and we could make it anything we would like, like a necklace, a magnet, a pendent, a keychain, and anything else that you will like. I made a necklace, with the infinity logo for my mom. I printed it out and it is looking amazing. I really am enjoying this laser cutting unit, and I don’t want it to end. But I am excited to start the next unit soon. I hope that I can keep making more laser cutting designs, and keep having fun in Mr.Calverts class.

Rube Goldberg Reflection

We recently finished our Rube Goldberg project! This is probably my favorite project we have done so far! I really liked thinking about a way to make a whole machine just to do a simple task. Now let’s start from the beginning. When we got introduced to this project I was so excited! I saw my brothers do it and I couldn’t wait until it was my turn. First thing we had to do was research and start planning out our sketch for our contraption. This was a bit difficult. But the research was a lot of fun to do! We researched on simple machines, and learned about some everyday objects that are simple machines. Like a car for example, a car is a wheel and axle! That is actually one of the simple machines I used for my contraption. I used a toy car! I also used a ramp, which is an inclined plane. The last simple machine I used was a lever! This might surprise you, but dominoes are actually a lever! After  researching I really started to focus on the sketch, my sketch changed three times throughout the project. My first contraption had around 25 steps! And half of the steps seemed impossible! So I switched it up, but there were a few parts that still just didn’t make any sense to me! Then finally I got it! I made my sketch and it was time to start building! Originally I wanted my simple task to be knocking down a milk jug and letting it fall into a bowl of cereal. But then I noticed how hard that was going to be! So I changed it to just putting cereal into a bowl, which was much easier! Since the simple task is in the end, I only had to make a few modifications to my build, and then it was time to start testing. My whole machine took only 11 tries! I was extremely surprised, since I knew that for a lot of people it would take more than 20 tries! Plus most of my failures weren’t very annoying, and I usually didn’t have to put anything back up. I did have one or two where all of my dominoes knocked down, or only a few of them knocked down. Once it worked I had to make the video! Which surprisingly wasn’t hard at all! I finished it in two days, I expected it to take a lot longer! Overall I had a lot of fun with this project, I can’t wait for more to come!

Here is my video and my sketch!

Rube Goldberg Process

The Rube Goldberg project so far has been so much fun! First lets start off with how the whole idea started. First I had to think of the simple task, and then I would go backwards. I had some trouble figuring this out, but then I started thinking of things that I do everyday! One of those things is having cereal for breakfast! I thought that my simple task would be pouring milk into a bowl of cereal! Next I had to start thinking, so I made a very messy sketch, but then I noticed that a lot of things I had in this sketch would probably not work. So I decided to make another sketch! Once I made that sketch I went to go get the supplies that I needed for it, and then I started building! About a quarter way through the process I noticed that this wasn’t going to work. All of the steps were so complicated and it would maybe have taken 100 plus tries! I made one final sketch and that is the one that I am building right now! I think this one is going to work, and i’m not going to have that much trouble with this one! So far the building process has been hard, and has needed lots of tape. I am excited to see what the final results are going to be like, and how many tries it is going to take to complete the whole thing! I hope that there will be more fun coming with this project, and I am very excited to see how it turns out!
