Technology Blog Post #5

The technology quarter has been a lot of fun. But I have had a lot of struggles during it as well. Our first project we did laser cutting. This was a lot of fun, but I did struggle on using Vectornator at first. There were so many confusing things about it, but especially using the pen tool. I didn’t understand how to use it at first, and it was really confusing. I kept needing to ask people if they could help me. But I eventually got it, and it ended up not being that bad. The next unit that we did was the soldering iron unit. I had a lot of fun doing it, but a lot of trouble forming the wires into the shape that I wanted them to be. My design was a dog, so there were many curves, and I had to bend the wire a lot. This was very troubling because at many points I couldn’t find a way to bend it in the way I wanted it to be bent.  I also had a lot of trouble cutting the wire. Often what would happen is it would be too hard to cut or too small to cut. What happened several times was I cut the piece of medal, but then it would fly somewhere around the room, and I couldn’t find it. So I would have to re-bend the medal and re-cut it, and then it would fly away again. This was very frustrating but I eventually got it. After soldering we had to do a light switch unit. This unit was a lot of fun, but at first I was scared that I wouldn’t have enough time to finish my light switches. I thought this because I was one of the last people to solder. Another struggle I had with this unit was thinking of ideas for my switches. The first design came easy to me, but then the next was harder to think of. I didn’t want them to be too simple, but I also didn’t want them to be too complicated. I had to be able to turn the light switch on easily. I eventually got it and figured everything out, but it was hard. Overall all these projects have been a lot of fun, and all the struggles have taught me to never give up.

We have started our laser cutting unit. In this unit we use the app Vectornator and we draw cool designs, then we send it to our teacher Mr.Calvert and with his laser cutter he cuts out our design and it becomes a cool wooden pendant, magnet, piece of jewelry, pretty much anything you want. The first thing I made with the laser cutter was a wooden banner. When we used the app Vectornator, we used the pen tool. It was really hard at first, but I ended up getting the hang of it after practicing a few times. I learned that the reason why we use Vectornator, and not any other app is because Vectornator doesn’t use pixels, and the laser cutter doesn’t work well with pixels. My banner came out really nice, and I am very happy with the final product of it. After we made this design, and got more familiar with Vectornator, we started a new project. For this project we got to make a design of our own, and we could make it anything we would like, like a necklace, a magnet, a pendent, a keychain, and anything else that you will like. I made a necklace, with the infinity logo for my mom. I printed it out and it is looking amazing. I really am enjoying this laser cutting unit, and I don’t want it to end. But I am excited to start the next unit soon. I hope that I can keep making more laser cutting designs, and keep having fun in Mr.Calverts class.

During Technology we have been working and learning a lot about atoms. I have learned that inside of atoms there are Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons. Atoms are in everything, and when I say everything, I mean EVERYTHING. We learned that atoms can be positive, negative, or neutral. Protons are positive, electrons are negatives, and neutrons are neutral. We learned this digitally. When rubbing a balloon on a sweater, or on your hair it collects a lot of negative electrons. When we put the balloon against the digital wall, all of the negative electrons always moved from the balloon, and all the positive protons stayed in place. This happens since opposites attract. Negative electrons, and negative electrons want nothing to do with each other, and this little experiment explains that. Atoms are very cool, and I really enjoy learning about them in Mr.Calverts class. I really understand what I am learning, and I have fun while doing it. Atoms are a cool subject to learn about, and I recommend you learning about them too.

We have started our technology quarter, and so far I have really enjoyed it. We have done a lot of partner work, and a lot of things to get to know each other better. What I really enjoyed doing was the real life escape room. We were split up into two teams, and during this we really learned how to work together as a group, and how to communicate with each other. When we were solving the puzzle we were having trouble with everything. We had trouble finding clues, communicating with each other, listening to each other, and working as a team in general. This wasn’t really working for us, and I think we realized it a bit late. But in the end we got it together and really worked hard. We were starting to act like a team, communicating, listening to each other, working together, and every other aspect of a team. We learned that it is important to give others a chance to speak, and hear their thoughts, because if you don’t then you will be stuck with your idea, and you will not be able to branch out into the world. Your imagination will stay small, and you won’t grow as a thinker or a person. Doing this activity really helped us in many     different aspects, and I am very glad that we did it.

Computer Technology Reflection One

What have you learned so far?

I have learned how to code on scratch. When I was in elementary school we would code on Tynker, and I would have so much trouble. But now that I am more familiar with scratch I know how to code much better than before. And now I really know how to code!

What was fun?

Coding has been Fun! Right now I am making the music code and it has been so much fun, but it has also been hard. My things have sometimes not saved and I would have to start all over again, but when that happens I think of a brand now great idea, and it makes me so happy!

What would you like to know more about?

I would like to know more about coding in general, and new tricks to use. Something that I am struggling on right now is finding new music. I want my code to be amazing, and to have great music, but I am not sure how to do that.
