In the book Refugee, by Alan Gratz, three characters have different problems, all in different places, in different times. The first character is Josef. Josef lives in Germany, in the 1930’s. His family is Jewish, and they are forced to leave Germany, and travel to Cuba. The next character is Isabel. Isabel lives in Cuba, in 1994 and in her country, people are rioting against their president. She is forced to leave because her father has gotten himself into trouble and that forces her family to leave Cuba. The final character is Mahmoud. Mahmoud lives in Syria, in 2015. In his Country, there is a war. The war is happening because the government want more power, but the people disagree. A similarity between all three characters is that they all need to leave because there is violence in their homeland. Another similarity is that all three characters need to flee their homes. One difference between the characters is the reason of why they have to flee. Josef needs to flee because of his religion, Isabel needs to leave because of rioting, and Mahmoud needs to leave because of war with the government.
If you have an interest in war and violence of our history, this is the perfect book for you.
Sincerely, Sabrina
