Building a Reading Life

Building a Reading Life

In this unit, the students will begin building healthy reading habits. The boys and girls learn to monitor for sense, to use context clues to understand challenging words, and to summarize. The goal of the first bend is to help each child build a reading life. The students create their own reading identities. In the second bend, the students will learn to take further responsibility for their reading. The students learn to take on the role of active problem solvers when reading becomes difficult. In addition, the students learn new vocabulary from their books.  In the last bend, the students will think, read, and write about books with their reading partners. They will learn to retell stories with their reading partners.
