Panyee FC

In class I have been working on an essay based off of the video Panyee FC. This is my final essay! Enjoy

All By Themselves

By Sabrina

Have you ever made something out of nothing, or created a legacy without even knowing it? Well that is exactly what the boys in the video Panyee FC did. They lived on a floating village in Southern Thailand, where space was hard to find. The boys had to do everything for themselves because no one had ever done it before.

The boys had themselves a team, but they didn’t have a space to play. “We had ourselves a football team, but we didn’t have a pitch. This was a real problem because where we live space wasn’t something we had.” (They call it football, but we call it soccer).  Although this is a problem, they didn’t give up yet. They used all of their spare time after school, and gathered all of the old wood and fishing rafts, and they built a pitch. Next they built themselves goals to go with the pitch, and they finally had somewhere to play soccer! Although this sounds easy, it isn’t.

The boys gained the basic knowledge of what soccer would be like by watching competitive soccer on tv, and in the video you see them watching soccer, but no one in their village is playing it. They were the first people in their village to play soccer so they had no coach to tell them what to do, and not many people knew much of anything about soccer. Although they might have had all the basic knowledge they needed, it took bravery and determination to actually get up and do it. It was a big risk that they took being the very first on their island to play soccer!

Due to the fact that they were the only team on the island, the boys could only play against each other. Finally after a long time of practicing one of the boys came from the mainland with a flyer advertising the Pangha Cup. Even though they only knew how competitions worked from tv, they did know that being a part of the Pangha Cup would take a lot of practice and hard work. “We didn’t know if we were good enough to enter” one of the boys said. (They didn’t know if they were good enough because they had only ever played against each other). They ended up taking the risk and getting to the semi finals!

What I have learned from this story is that no matter how hard the task is, it is always worth it in the end, and not just because you have completed your task, but because you can end with something to be proud of.

Rube Goldberg #2

Since my last Rube Goldberg post, me, Alba, and Nicole, have chosen a task, designed, and have found some materials. Our task is to feed a dog. We have sketched our design and I think that it is going to work. We have found some pipes to use and a ramp or two, but we still need to get a peg board and a few other materials. We have been working well together and I can’t wait to start the building!

Sincerely, Sabrina

Rube Goldberg #1

As a group project me and two partners will be creating a Rube Goldberg simple machine that will complete a task.

For my Rube Goldberg me, Alba, and Nicole, are going to think of our task, find materials, and build. We are currently finding different odd materials and thinking of our task. We are thinking of using a catapult in our simple machine. I wonder what we’ll chose…

3 Sentence Summary #1

In the book Stars Of Summer by Tara Dairman, the main character Gladys Gatsby faces many different challenges. This is the sequel to another book, All Four Stars and in both books Gladys becomes a deeper cook and food critic. In the second book Gladys is going to Camp Bently for the first time, even though she is only going to make it easier to sneak out and review restaurants, Gladys is still going to have to “suffer” through some camp activities.

I highly recommend this series! (There are three books in this series)

What Really Happened To The Titanic

For my feature article I chose to study the Titanic. During the research I decided to study four different sub topics, which became my different pages. My favorite part about this whole process was designing my article. It was fun for me to be able to get creative and use my imagination to put my article together. I hope you enjoy my final result…

Winter Break

As many people know, New York in December isn’t the warmest weather. December is also when Heathcote Elementary School goes on winter break. For the people that stay in Westchester it’s not real beach weather but for those people that go to a nice warm beach, somewhere hot, the weather is just dreamy. Lucky for me I am one of the people that goes away, to somewhere nice and warm. This winter break I am going to Jamaica. I am so excited to get some heat for a change! To top off this vacation two days after we get there it’s my birthday! I can’t wait to be in my lounge chair all soaked in ocean water!

The Printing Press Post 1

In class each student picked a topic from the Constitution time period to research. I decided to do my constitution project with a partner, Vanessa. Read to find out our plan for our project.

For my constitution project, I chose the printing press from back when the constitution was made as my topic . First me and my partner are going to gather research on a few different sup topics. I am researching how the the printing press worked and the timeline of people that made changes to it throughout history. Vanessa is researching how the printing press looked. To show all of our research and information on the printing press Vanessa and I will be making a newspaper with three different subtopics, each of our research topics. Vanessa and I are currently working on inserting our information into our newspaper and we are almost done. I am excited to see what our final project looks like!

The National Constitution Center

Recently, my class visited Philadelphia. It just so happens that we are also studying journalism, so I wrote an article based on my experience in Philly. Enjoy!

Philadelphia, November 9. It was a rainy day in Philadelphia when the J and R buses pulled up to the National Constitution Center. Screaming kids poured out of the buses. The rain didn’t stop them, they were determined to have a great day. Heathcote 5th grade teacher, Ms. Boyer said “ I have been taking kids to Philadelphia for 13 years and I know what’s waiting inside. I am always so excited for my students to discover the exhibits.”

Alexander Hamilton Exhibit

The first stop in the Constitution Center was the Alexander Hamilton Exhibit. Fifth Grade student Vanessa says that her first thoughts when stepping into the Exhibit were “Facts… pure facts.” “The facts were from throughout his life and facts about him personally.” The exhibit was full of old artifacts, such as James Madison’s personalized wine bottle seal,  a piece of Alexander Hamilton’s hair, and John Adam’s pocket watch. Not only was there interesting artifacts, but there were stories that went with each of the artifacts. Heathcote fifth grade student Sabrina says “ Not only was it informative, but it was also very interesting.”

Main Exhibit

The Heathcote 5th grade’s next stop was the main exhibit. This was a very interactive experience for all of the kids. They were able to learn something that could take days to read in just a click. “ My favorite part of the main exhibit was the old style telephones that read the information on the screen into the telephones.” says Nicole, one of the Heathcote 5th graders. The exhibit was full of information. “ It was blinding” says Sabrina one of the 5th graders.

Living News

Next up on the fifth graders  journey was a show called living News. This was an interactive show that highlighted  real life problems with two sides of the story. One of the skits illustrated the problem of gun laws. Another focused on capital punishment. The next skit  focused on a problem that had to do with religious beliefs, and the last skit dealt with the question should bags be checked in school. At the end of the show the audience was able  to take part in different votes about their opinion on the skit. “ This was my overall favorite activity. Mainly because we got to do so much.” says Nicole one of the fifth graders.

Freedom Rising

The final stop in the Constitution Center was a show called Freedom Rising. This show had many different features to it. After asking many of the fifth graders, one of the favorite features was the seating and the screens. The seats were just like stadium seating, but in the round which made it more fun for the kids. The screens were everywhere! They were up high on the walls and down low on the floor. “There was one man doing all of the talking, which made it easier to understand all of the information.” says Sabrina, a fifth grader.

According to Heathcote 5th graders, if you are ever in Philadelphia The National Constitution Center should be a must visit place. “ Overall the trip was amazing” says Rocio one of the fifth graders.

Sincerely, Sabrina

Philadelphia

I can’t believe it… the 5th grade at Heathcote Elementary is taking a trip to Philadelphia! I can’t wait to see everything. Our morning starts at 5:50. We need to get to school at 5:50 am and the bus leaves at 6:00 am. Once we get there we are going to the National Constitution Center. Then we get to walk around the Independence Mall with a tour guide. Finally at 3:00pm we will get back on the buses and head back to school! I hope everything goes great!

Sincerely, Sabrina

Two Long Weeks

Laying on the couch, snuggling in my blanket, cracker crumbs all over the floor, barely touched soup on the table, wondering to myself “why me, why do I have to be the one stuck in bed with a fever, why can’t I be at school with all my friends feeling anything but sick?” A few days passed, but I just got worse. Finally my mom decided to take me to the doctor. There was just one problem, I was getting weak, so if it was hard to get me to the kitchen it was even harder to get me to the doctor. When we eventually got to the doctor I took a strep test. The doctor was going to stick a tube in my throat. My stomach started aching even more than before. I squeezed my moms hand as hard as I could and then before I knew it it was over. We sat in the waiting room for what seemed like forever when finally the doctor called me into his office to tell me that I had strep!

The doctor gave me a medicine to take home with me and he told me to take my first dose after my dinner. When it was time to take my first dose I held my nose took two deep breaths and drank it. It was horrible. It made me feel weird my stomach hurt like it hadn’t before and finally I realized what it was. I ran to the bathroom as fast as I could and as soon as it started it was over. A little while passed and the feeling went away. The weird thing is that this kept happening every time I took my medicine. We realized that I was reacting to the medicine that I was taking. My mom called the doctor and he said to come and see him the next day. Of Course we listened to my doctor and went to see him. He gave me a different medicine. After a while I got better, at least we thought.

It was time to go school for the first time since I got sick I woke up in the morning feeling ok not great, but fine. I got on the bus and that’s when things got bad. The bus ride was only five minutes long, but in those five minutes I got so sick, sick like I have never been before. Those five minutes felt like hours. Finally we got to school I got off the bus and took a few deep breaths and tried to relax and calm down, but I couldn’t. Walking into school made me feel even worse. It was so hot and I was so dizzy. I tried my best to forget about it, but the more I tried the harder it was. Finally the bell rang. As soon as I got into class my teacher noticed something was wrong. She asked me if I was ok and I said yes, but she could tell that I was lying. I told her what was wrong and she told me to go to the nurse. The nurse called my mom.

When my mom came to pick me up I told her everything. I told her about the bus and how I tried to calm down and relax, but I couldn’t. My babysitter was with my mom when she came to pick me up.. I got in the car and when we finally reached our street I couldn’t take it anymore. I told my mom and she stopped the car. We rushed out and I made it the grass, but then, I threw up! I didn’t want to get back into the car so I walked home with my babysitter and my mom drove the car home.

After these few tough weeks I now shiver whenever someone mentions being sick or even getting a flu or strep test. Whenever I have a cold or a little virus I now know that it is nothing compared to this experience. I am so grateful to have gotten the care that I did because sometimes love and care does just the same as medicine.

Sincerely, Sabrina
