Poetry Reading

This is a video of me reading my “Where I’m From” poem. The 5th grade chose this theme. I really like this poem because it reminds me of the toys I had when I was little. I chose the background because it looked cool.

Enjoy my poem reading!

Capstone #1: Choosing a topic

In my class we have a project called Capstone. Capstone is where you choose a topic that you’re interested in and you want to learn more about it. It can be something that you know a lot about, or something that you only know a little about. That’s why you have to do research on it. You also have to interview someone that’s an expert at it and visit a site like a place where the person’s at. You can also use Skype or Google Hangouts to communicate with people far away.

I chose The Brazil national football team because I’m an expert at soccer and I want to learn more about the Brazil soccer team because I think that there’s a lot of information on it. I think that because the team has won many World Cups. Later on, my teacher Mrs. Edwards told me that the topic I chose was too easy to just search it up and find out everything so we talked and tried to find something better to be my topic. She asked me to show here the list of things that I’m interested in, enjoy doing etc. Then. after she saw that I put robots in a lot of the places so she asked me if I was interested in robots exploring space and underwater first but I said “Not really.”Then she asked me if I was interested in robots in medicine and I said yes. Then I searched up robotics in medicine and robotic surgery came up. I thought,” That sounds pretty cool.” So that’s how I will be focusing on robotic surgery because that is something that I’m really interested in.

Immigration WeVideo

My class has an Immigration We Video project. It’s where you pretend you’re an immigrant from a country in Europe and you immigrate to Ellis Island. I think that it was really fun because we had to get pictures, record our voice to go with the pictures etc. I was a Russian immigrant named Vladimir Orlov and I used my classmates to be my brother, dad, mom, and friends both in Russia and America after I “immigrated”. In the beginning we had to pick a country in Europe and I picked Russia because it is a large country with a lot of information on it so researching is easy. We made up a character. Then we created a storyboard. That was hard because we needed to make the pictures line up with the words. Then we took pictures with immigrant clothes.

The whole immigration We Video was really cool and I learned a lot!

Poetry Unit

My class had a poetry unit. We had to write poems of any kind and about anything, basically whatever type of poem you want for homework every week. I wrote many different kinds of poems. For example, a haiku about a tsunami. A haiku is a short poem. Only three lines. The first has five syllables, the second has seven, and the third also has five syllables. I also did some free writes. It’s where you can just make up some kind of poem. Poems don’t have to rhyme.

Each person in my class had to write their own “Where I’m From” poem. It’s where you use objects and places etc. that are in your life to write a poem. For example, I am from baby toys. After we wrote it, we had to type it, then make a lot of revisions, and in the end illustrate it.

Our poetry unit was pretty fun!
