Blog post #9

This is our last week of technology. I am really sad that it is over because it was a really fun quarterly. My favorite projects were probably the electroscope and the cam mechanism. I really liked these projects because they were all about trial and error, and when I made a mistake I knew how to fix it. I really like Mr. Calvert teaching us because he made it really fun and he made everything easy to understand. I have learned so much from this quarterly and I can’t wait to have it next year!

This week in tech, it is our second to last week of the quarter. I will remeber to bring my bag into call on Monday! Today we stated watching “The Battery Movie”. I thought it was very interesting and funny. We learned about how batteries are made and the side effects of them. I though that the people that taught us about it in the video were really funny and they made it really fun. I am sad the quarter is almost over!

This week in Tech, the project for the week is building an electroscope. The first thing I did was bringing out all the materials i needed. I had all of them. I watched the video and paused it do to every step carefully. When the video came to the step where you had to blow up the ballon and rub it against your electroscope, I couldn’t find my balloon, I remembered that I had taken it out in the beginning  of the project, but I didn’t find it. I searched for 10 min and still couldn’t find it. I decided to substitute  the ballon with a plastic water bottle. I did the experiment and video taped it. After that I started to clean up, and I took apart my whole entire electroscope. While I was cleaning up I found the ballon! I decided to make another electroscope

This week my project in technology is building trusses. Before conducting this project I got all my materials ready. The materials for this project were, toothpicks or and type of hard material to stick the toothpicks in. I this case I used carrots, because they are very hard but you can also cut them easily. This project was very frustrating becasue every time one toothpick didn’t fit into the carrot the whole entire structure would fall. In the end my truss wasn’t very successful, it only held 1 book.

This week is the last week for building our I-beams. I am almost done with mine and I am interested to see how it turns out. The material I used for this project include, glue, cardboard, scissors, and a ruler. It was a little hard for me to cut the cardboard with scissors because I am a lefty, so with my parents  permission and help I used a sharp cutting tool to help cut my cardboard.  The end result of my I-Beam turned out to be amazing! It held 20 cans of food and 5 books!

PE Log

For this assignment , I made a chart saying all the physical activities that I did for that week. Then I counted all the number’s up and created an average. One of the formulas I did was on Wednesday I got over 2 hours of exercise. I think this chart helped me because this way I could see all the physical activity I did for that week and if I need to do anymore.

Feature Article Podcast

“These will be your partners, for the rest of our journalism unit.” Mrs. Robert said, Sophia was my partner. We had to chose a topic, so we broke it down from school rules, and decided on homework as our topic. We started off writing two introductions for our feature article, at first we were vary overwhelmed because we had to write two whole good introductions instead of one. After we wrote them Mrs. Robert touched some things up and then we had three different people to read our two introductions and ask them which one they liked better. The majority of people said that they liked the first introduction better than the second, so we used the first one. Once we had our introduction done now we had to work on our first paragraph. When we were writing is I thought it was pretty fun because we were writing the article on a very interesting topic. We decided to send out a survey to some of the children at our school, based on the results on the survey we used them to write our first paragraph. When we were done with our first paragraph we used the student handbook to work on our second paragraph. Next we had to work on our third paragraph, and we interviewed Mrs. Rago, and Mrs. Stile to write our third paragraph. After we finished we though we were done but we weren’t, we had to show it to Mrs. Robert. She said that the paragraphs were good but she thought that they could be better. So we worked worked and worked to make them better. Once we tried and made them better Mrs. Robert loved it! Now all we had to do was our podcasts.

Our whole class saw Mrs. Casal, and he taught us how to make our podcasts. He gave us a microphone, and a box to make sure there wasn’t and back round noise. He taught us how to record and then he sent us off. Once we finished recording he taught us how to put all our podcasts on one big slide. That was basically our whole unit. I thought it was very fun, challenging, and one of our best units.

Launch Reflection #2

After our first launch we were very proud of ourselves, but we had to make one variable change to our rocket.  My group (Apollo 20) decided that our variable change was going to be to change our fins of our rocket and make them better. We decided to just take all our fins off and start them over. First we had to take a vote if we were going to add more fins, take some fins off, or just make new fins and keep the  same amount of fins. The majority of the vote was to take away one fin. Since we had 4 fins before we changed anything now we would have 3 fins. We decided to only have 3 fins because we thought it would have an effect on the spin of our rocket. Once we made our fins we hot glued them to our rocket and it looked brand new and a lot better. Once it was time to launch I wasn’t as nervous as I was on our first launch because I already did it, but I was very concerned about the weather. It was very windy, cold, and cloudy. I thought this would have an effect on our rocket because of the wind. Once we were on the field I started getting a little bit nervous. It was our turn to launch and it was getting more windy by the minute. My job for launch 2 was the countdown. I screamed at the top of my lungs clinomitors ready. And then I did the countdown. Brandon pushed the button and once our rocket launched I got a little upset. Because our rocket did not go high at all. I think this was because of the weather conditions. My group and I were a little upset but we knew that we tried our best.
