E-Learning Friday April 17

Good morning!

“Try something new Thursday” was a great success! I’ve learned to use the breakout rooms on Zoom and we will be trying them out on Monday. What about you? What did you try? How did it work out?

Mrs. Schilo had shared that she tried going on a few virtual Disney rides with her son and loved it! She shared a list of rides that is now in your social studies folder. Try them out and let us know what happens.

This morning you have a 10am Zoom with Mr. Borgia.  Have fun and don’t be late!

Let’s get started…

MATH:

Today in the video you will learn you can weigh objects in compound units, kilograms, and grams. You will see examples of enlarged scales and discuss the value of each unlabeled mark. This video will help you understand how to read different weighing scales. Also, you will look at a balance scale instead of a weighing scale to measure the mass of an object.

Below visit Thinking Blocks to revisit bar modeling strategies. You can select a model to challenge yourself to different word problems. Read the word problems, label the bars, create the actual bar models and solve the answer.  This great website guides you and gives you hints along the way to be successful in solving word problems by drawing a bar model.

Weather Forecasting: What is Weather? Part Four (Video)

  • This lesson is all about Data Analysis. Looking at the information you recorded this week on your weather journal and comparing it to the professional forecast. You will need your completed weather journal to do this work.
  • Copy and past these Stop and Think questions to your E-Learning Slides, answer in complete sentences with details.
  • The full slide presentation is in your science folder.

POETRY

Video: Poetry Centers Video with Mrs. Mangan

Enjoy exploring poetry in a different way today! Get inspired by a beautiful piece of poetry and create some art that shows what you see in your mind. Or go outside and find something that inspires you in nature to be descriptive and create your own poetry. Please complete at least one of these activities today. Post a picture of your artwork or nature item on SeeSaw, and then use the microphone to read aloud the poem to go with it.

READING:

  • Independent Reading: Read for 30 minutes. TrueFlix, a physical book, Scholastic, or even an audiobook.
  • Choose two pages to photograph and read to me on SeeSaw – this is due today.
  • You can also choose to read from the collections I’ve shared with you on Epic.

SMART FACT

On this day in the year 1964, The Ford Motor Co. unveiled its new Mustang model at the New York World’s Fair. The Mustang was championed by Ford Division general manager Lee Iacocca, with a suggested retail price of $2,368. The car was a great success and sold over one million cars in its first 18 months. In the Disney movie Tomorrowland (have you seen it?, if you haven’t you should!), there’s a 10-minute prologue set at The New York World’s Fair 1964  that was held in Queens, NY that year.

Have a great day!

Wellness Week: April 6-April 10

Good morning 3rd Graders!

Welcome to Wellness Week! Throughout the week, teachers will be offering workshops, lessons, and activities that will explore the ways in which we connect with ourselves, others, and the wider world. This week you will have the opportunity to take part in so many different experiences. We hope you all take the time to enjoy new independent learning opportunities and enjoy time with your families.

Participation and Attendance:

Workshops and activities are listed by age range AND starting times (9:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 1:00 p.m.) on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.  The district realizes many families within our school community need flexibility on Thursday and Friday to engage in religious observance, all activities and sessions will be pre-recorded and noted in BOLD.

As you work through this week, there are three sessions daily that you are expected to participate in. You should choose from the activities paired to our grade level, or within our grade level bands. Some of these activities will be with teachers who are conducting the lesson live while other sessions are pre-recorded activities that you can choose to watch at a moment when you have free time during that day. The district has a reflection form for you to fill out after you have completed the activities for the day.

Directions to Access the Menu of Activities and Submit Daily Attendance:(this was sent to your parents in a separate email)

Step 1: Click on this link.

Step 2: Click on the activity that interests you under the appropriate time and age range.

Note: For synchronous activities, if you haven’t already, download the Zoom client or Zoom mobile app to the device that you will be using to participate in the activity. Students in grades 2-12 will need to log into Zoom with their Scarsdale Schools user account by clicking “Sign in with Google.” Students in grades K-1 will have to be signed in through an adult’s Zoom account.

Step 3: Follow the directions for the activity or click on the zoom invite and engage in the live session.

Step 4: Fill out a daily attendance/reflection form and submit.

Have a wonderful week! We wish you a Happy Passover and Happy Easter!

March 30

E-Learning Monday March 30

Good morning!

I hope you all enjoyed the weekend and found new ways to be creative and enjoyed time with your family. I have been playing Monopoly with my boys and baked really good brownies. I also spent time with the third-grade teachers via Zoom to plan a great poetry lesson for you today!

It’s Monday and that means we are starting with a Discussion Question. You can access the Padlet here: What do you want to learn?

As always, when planning your day be sure to make time for snack & recess. Also, plan one special each day for yourself as all of your teachers have great learning opportunities waiting for you on The Heathcote Gateway.

So let’s get started…

We have a Zoom session scheduled for 10:30am in which we will review the Poetry Activity for today and the Photograph Analysis work below. I’m looking forward to seeing you all! The link is in your social studies folder – don’t be late!

Social Studies

•Photograph Analysis: In this video, there is an example of analyzing a photograph/illustration using the See, Think, Wonder  Thinking Routine. You will learn how to analyze a photograph/illustration by making observations about the people, objects and activities. You will then learn how to look at the “main idea” of the photograph by thinking about what activities you observed happening in the picture. Then some example wonderings are shared with you based on the illustration.

Watch the video. A google slideshow has been shared with you showing the next photograph/illustration you will be analyzing using the See, Think, Wonder template (this is in your social studies folder).

•Cultural Universals Social Aspects: The slides are in your social studies folder. Please complete by Wednesday. While you may be tempted to write about how you are spending your time now, try to think of how you would normally spend your time and share that information. Please have this completed by Monday.

MATH

Today we will review and summarize  AREA concepts that we have completed over the past two weeks.  Please watch the Math Antics video below to capture the big ideas. Afterward, please watch the video made by Mrs. DeGrazia to help visualize the different measurements of square units. It is important to remember to label the correct square units when using area.

Math Antics Practice: Complete these 3-word problems – this slide show is also in your math folder on Drive. You can insert a text box to share your thinking

Poetry – Heart Maps

Heart Mapping: Writing from the Heart

VIDEO: 3rd Grade Teachers Describe Their Heart Maps

HEART MAP: The template is in your social studies folder

Some questions to help you get started heart mapping:

  • What memories have you stored in your heart (they don’t have to be BIG or exciting memories. For example, the smell of molasses cookies baking in the oven at my grandmother’s house is an important memory to me because it was something she would always do.)
  • What people have been important to you – and why?
  • What are some experiences or events that you will never forget?
  • What happy or sad memories do you have?
  • What secrets do you keep in your heart?
  • What things or objects are important to you — for example, a tree in your backyard or a stuffed animal, etc.?
  • What’s at the center of your heart – you might want to place the most important people, memories, and experiences in the center?
  • Ask yourself if you want to keep some things inside your heart and less important things on the outside of your heart.
  • Do you want to draw more than one heart – good and bad; happy and sad; secret and open – and include different things inside each heart?
  • Do different colors represent different emotions, events, and relationships?

See you all at 10:30!

Ms. Boyer xo
