Friday May 1st – 3L’s E-Learning Plan

Happy Friday! We have some fun activities planned and opportunities for you to finish and correct this week’s work.

Today your zoom schedule is as follows:

  • Mr. Weber’s Instrumental Music Session 11:00 – 11:15
  • Sr. Johnson’s Gimkit game with entire 3rd grade class 2:00 – 2:15

ELA: Book Clubs- Virtual Book Club Conversations

The best part of being in a book club is that you get to talk with your classmates about the book you are reading. You get to laugh together about your favorite part, build on each other’s ideas and see different perspectives by respectfully disagreeing with one another. It is these conversations that help you grow as a reader and thinker. Watch the video to remind yourself of what a great book club conversation looks and sounds like both in the classroom and virtually.

Math

Today you are going to explore IXL. Watch the video tutorial below to learn OR be reminded of how to log onto your Scarsdale Schools IXL account. (Remember, if you have a private IXL account that is linked to your PERSONAL email, that is separate from your Scarsdale Account!)

Click on the link for the Heathcote Gateway: Heathcote Gateway

You will be doing the following practice skills:

Third Grade:MATH

  • G (Multiplication Fluency) #1-4: Multiplication Tables for 2,3,4,5 and 10 – Fact Practice, True/False, Sorting and Finding the Missing Factor
  • BB (Units of Measurement) #19: Compare and Convert Metric Units of Weight

SCIENCE

If a family member of yours has Facebook and you are interested in some interactive LIVE activities, the Liberty Science Center has some amazing events you might just want to look into. These are ongoing events, so if you cannot do today’s, there are many more opportunities for you to explore and participate. Have fun!

Weather & Climate Part 3

Yesterday’s Assignment was a 2 day assignment – Creating a World Climate Map to learn more about how location affects climate. Be sure to post your Climate Map and new learnings/questions on SeeSaw

Here are the slides for the two day activity. They are also in your SCIENCE folder. Upload the final project to Seesaw.

Weather and Climate Part 3

You will need to print out these three worksheets for the activity:

Climate in the Americas

Climate in Asia & Australia

Climate in Europe & Africa

After completing the Mystery Doug Video, this is a wonderful way to summarize all the information we have learned about the different climate zones.

SMART FACT

On this day in 1993 the World Wide Web was born. A team at the University of Illinois’ National Center for Supercomputing Applications released Mosaic, the first Web browser to become popular with the general public. The next few years saw the launch of such websites as Yahoo (1994), Amazon (1995), eBay (1995) and Google (1998).  What do you imagine the future of the web to be like when you are in college?

ELA: Book Clubs

Today, after doing your agreed upon reading, you will be posting on your Book Club’s Padlet page. Watch the video today to hear about the Dos and Don’ts of writing on Padlet.

While you are commenting on each other’s posts, please be sure to be respectful. These comments are meant to help each other, ask questions and push each other in a positive direction.  These are our friends we are talking to, so remember the golden rule- do onto others as you would like done to you. If you would not like it said to you, don’t say it to someone else.

Some ways to disagree respectfully include:

I disagree because…

Please explain further because I see it a little differently.

Can you provide more text evidence because I thought about it in a different way?

Math

Watch this video below. You will learn how you can find the capacity of many containers as well as a mini challenge for you to think about.

Watch this video below to see some different strategies on solving word problems with capacity.

Copy and paste these slides to your April E-Learning Slideshow.

You can draw bar models, draw pictures, write a number sentence or use a combination of the three to solve these two word problems. Think through your work and make sure you show how you solved the problem.

On April 29, 2004, the National World War II Memorial opened in Washington, D.C., to thousands of visitors, providing overdue recognition for the 16 million U.S. men and women who served in the war. The memorial is located on 7.4 acres on the former site of the Rainbow Pool at the National Mall between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. Mini Lesson for Book Clubs

Participating in a virtual book club can look and feel a little different than the book clubs that you were in at school. Watch the video to see how you can still be an active participant in these new book clubs, and how much of the good book club habits you gained at school can be applied to your clubs now at home.

Today you will continue your book club reading, as well as complete one activity from the Reading BINGO board. Be sure to complete your activity on paper first, and then take a picture/or video of your work to show us on Seesaw. When you record on Seesaw, tell us what book you are reading, and introduce the activity that you chose.

MATH: MEASURE CAPACITY IN LITERS

There are two systems that are used for measurement, a customary one used in the United States, and the metric system used in most of the world and also in the sciences in the United States.  We will continue to look at the metric system used for capacity.

Watch the video below to understand more about capacity and units of measurement; liters and milliliters

NOTE: YouTube video is not school protected so parental settings may need to be lifted:

Watch today’s video to measure and estimate the capacity of containers in liters.  Is it less than or more than 1 liter?

Today explore your kitchen and find containers of liquid.  Can you find containers 1 liter or more and can you find containers less than 1 liter? Post your containers and explanations on Seesaw.

Poetry for Heathcote Art & Poetry Festival

You should choose a poem of your creation that you would like to share and present on Heathcote’s Virtual Art and Poetry Festival. Once you have chosen a poem, you are to create a “Google Drawing” in your “Writing Folder” on your drive. You can insert pictures, drawings and other creative and colorful options that relate to the poem’s meaning and include their poem in a google shape of your choosing. Most importantly, your writing MUST be readable – meaning color and font choice should be carefully chosen. This assignment is due Tomorrow Friday April 24th. Poems will be then inserted onto our class padlets by Tuesday April 28th.

Today, poets, your job is to select your favorite poem from the last few weeks of our poetry unit. Pick one that you are proud of and want to share for our Heathcote Virtual Art and Poetry Festival. Watch the video, and create your own Google Drawing in your Writing folder of your Drive to publish your poem.

You have both today and tomorrow to create your drawing. Please be sure that your spelling and punctuation are correct. Include your first name or your initials only.

Math: Adding and Subtracting Compound Units

Today we will continue to look at compound units kg and g.  You will learn a few strategies to help you add mass in kg and g or subtract g from k.  Please look closely at the different strategies mentioned in the video and decide which method works best for you.

NOTE: If regrouping while subtracting is difficult for you, please continue to practice this skill separately. Maybe practice subtraction problems without the units ahead of time. For ex, 127-38 or 456- 76. It is important to understand the renaming process.

***Correction: Mrs. DeGrazia, in her video, states the answer to #14b is 5 kg 450g. The correct answer is 5 kg 100 g. Also the true answer to #15 is 25 kg. Sorry for the confusion!
