Atoms are completely consist of three particles. Protons, Electrons, and Neutrons. Particles of the same charge repel each other. When they are of opposite charges, they stick to each other. Protons are positively charged, and electrons are negatively charged. Neutrons are neutral. If your insert a neutron between two particles of the same charge, they do not repel each other.
