  • Print this out: You will need it for our active engagement work today. Please do not read ( we will do a read aloud today on zoom) I also put it in your SS folder just in case.

Last, you will need to read chapters 25-26 for Tuesdays reading lesson next week. You can get a head start over the weekend if that helps. I will have it in the reading folder by Saturday.

I will meet with students #16-19 today after our lesson. If someone still has a question that was not answered, you can certainly stay on and ask after our lesson.

Reading:

Yesterday we had a great conversation about secondary characters! I hope everyone is able to find a way to chat with their book club members. It is always easier to discuss books with friends and help each other with this type of reading work. If are not able to connect, please  practice the reading work yourself with your independent book. Here are some questions to guide you from our lessons:

  • Did you find the conflicts/problems that your character is facing?
  • Are you plotting on a story mountain?
  • Did you find the turning point where your character faced his/her problem?
  • How did your character change or solve his/her problem?
  • How did your character react to the problems? Remember to list the problems and reactions on a separate sheet of paper to discuss with your book club members.
  • Did you meet a secondary character?
  • Did you make a separate secondary character story mountain?
  • How does the secondary character help the main character (advisor, sidekick, challenger) Here’s an organizer to help jot this information: Secondary Character Organizer

BOOK REVIEW SEESAW DUE TODAY

WRITING:

Also, please remember to post on your own blog  by next week about your reading work. You can explain that every story has a story mountain and you can include a picture of the one you are either creating or created. Another idea would be to post a list of problems and your character’s reactions to the problems.  Last, can you start a relationship timeline that shows positive and negative relationships to the main character? Your blog post should be a reflection about what you are learning and doing as a reader.

Meerkats and Survival

During our science unit on Ecosystems, we have been studying: How do organisms interact with each other and their environment to survive?

In today’s lesson we constructed an argument to explain how being a part of a group helps Meerkats to survive. Students provided a claim, evidence and a reasoning format.

We read the informational text below on Meerkats.

As we gather and discuss information about animal behaviors and the effects of survival for each group, we realize some species can adapt, survive, or become extinct based on many factors.  From previous lessons, we learned about natural habitats and whether or not animals can survive in another habitat. The additional videos below have helped us bridge these concepts and understand how organisms can survive or possibly not survive, if the environment changes enough where organisms cannot adapt.

Animals Survive in a Group

How do organisms interact with each other and their environment to survive?

Today we learned that being part of a group can help animals survive by finding food, shelter, water, defending themselves from predators, reproducing and caring for offspring. We read informational texts on ants, ducks, fish, cheetahs, and beavers to understand cause and effect based on how an animal behaves to survive.

Our class took notes after reading each text and we noticed patterns with these animal behaviors.  Now, students will sort the animal groups and categorize them by: shelter, food/water, defense, and care of offspring.

Complete the padlet below and sort each animal group.

  • give evidence to why you chose to sort it the way you did
  • Use correct spelling and punctuation
  • Write in complete sentences

Sort Animal Groups

Here’s the video we watched in class to show different animal group behaviors. Have fun watching it again!

Ecosystems and Winter Word Search

Hello 3D!  I miss seeing everyone.  I will definitely be back by Monday. I’m sorry that I have been out sick for so long.  I found the following BrainPop videos that tie in nicely with our ecosystem unit of study.  Have fun learning!

Brainpop on Fossils

Brainpop on Ecosystems

BrainPop Extinction

When you finish the science videos, here are two winter word searches you can try.  Just click and drag on the word you find with your mouse. When you find all the words from the word bank on the right, the game will ask if you want to download the game, please say no. Click out of the tab and come back to my blog to try the other word search. Good luck searching!
