Re-designing our rocket

How can we make our rocket even better?

After our first launch we decided to make a whole new rocket. So we started off with taking all the duct tape and wings off our rocket. Then we had to discuss whether to make new wings or keep the wings we already had. We all agreed on making new wings except that the wings are going to be the exact same as the first wings but different colors. So then we traced them on the Styrofoam and cut them out. Everyone in my group wanted different colors for the wings but we finally figured out that the colors should be black, white and red. We covered each of them in those colors then went to decide the colors of the body of our rocket. Since it is breast cancer awareness month we decided on making the body pink.

For the nosecone we made a little bit of a different design. My group thought that we should make it taller, skinnier and a tiny bit wider. Since our school does not have a 3-D printer, a boy in our class Om is printing the nosecones for all of us because he has one of his own at home. So far this is what our re-design looks like.

Home of the Brave

This year in read aloud my teacher is reading Home of the Brave to us. The book is about a boy named Kek who lived in Africa and most of his family died so he has to come to America. When he comes to America he has to face a lot of challenges. We talk a lot about the book and also ask questions. Here is one of the questions. 

Gol is a cow, but Katherine Applegate (author of Home of The Brave) also uses her as a symbol. How does Gol represent Kek’s past, present, and possibly his future?  

Gol represents Kek’s past because Gol symbolizes home. It symbolizes home for him because he was a herder in his past and working at the farm and being with Gol reminds him of herding. Gol also represents love for Kek because it reminds him of family and he doesn’t have much family. He loved his family and that’s why it reminded him of love. Gol also gives Kek hope. He gives Kek hope about finding his mother.

Gol represents Kek’s present because as I said it reminds him of home. It represents his present because he is going through a tough time right now and needs things to bring back memories.

Gol represents his future because it represents that something will happen. For example his old life will come back not only herding, but his mom.

First Rocket Launch

When I was launching I used a trundle wheel to measure where we should read the clinometers. I had to walk fifty meters out from where the launch pad was in the field.

The launchpad used a pump for the fuel. We had to put two hundred and twenty milliliters. All the fuel we actually needed was two hundred milliliters, but when you put it on the launch pad a lot of water came out.

We used a rope when we were launching. The rope connected to the launch pad which connected to the rocket, and when you pull the rope, the rocket will fly.

What I learned while doing this project is using a clinometer. What I learned is when you use a clinometer, you cannot start at the ground, you have to start at eye level.

Everybody at jobs. My job was to count out fifty meters using a trundle wheel. During this project I learned what a trundle wheel is, and how to use it.

Looking at the graph, my group the Rocketeers got 48.5 meters as our average height of the rocket. While figuring out our average we had to read each four numbers and then see which one was the outlier. My groups outlier was thirty meters. We figured that out because all of our numbers are forty three, forty five, thirty which was our outlier and forty six. We figured that thirty was not as close to all the other numbers.

My questions for this launch are:

  • How could we make our rocket go even higher?
  • What other materials can we use for our nose cone?

After doing this launch I was proud of myself and my group and think that we can do even better on our next launch.


Rocketry – Building


When my group built our rocket we started off with getting a one liter bottle. When we got the bottle this is what we did!


With our bottle we put lines on with a sharpie where we would hot glue the wings on, and with the lines we sanded it so the hot glue will stay better when connecting the wings.


Duct Tape

My group chose to put blue and purple stripes on our rocket. We chose these colors because the girls in my group liked purple and the boys liked blue. That’s how we compromised.


When making the wings we used a Styrofoam sheet. We drew a temp let of the correct measurements and used that temp let to cut out the wings. The when we cut them out we also covered them in duct tape.


For the nosecone my group chose to 3-D print a nosecone. We designed it on a website called Tinker Cad. On there we got a shape and did the width and the length of the right measurements of  our rocket.

Info graphics

This year in science we have done info graphics on  Isaac Newton. In the process we had to first do all the research on him that we could, and then we had to do a prototype about him. At this phase we are making another prototype on google drawing. A info graphic is a combination of images and text. Also decorations!

In my info graphic the categories are “early life, adult life, quotes, inventions, three laws of motion, and lot’s of pictures. For the pictures every single one had a back round that made it relate to rocketry. For example I put a picture of the world. That related to Isaac Newton because he discovered the gravitation of the world. I also put an apple because of the myth when the apple falls from the tree onto his head.  For the tree laws of motion I explained each one and told how they relate to rocketry because we are also doing another unit science that is about rocketry.

That is basically what an info graphic is, and what mine is about.



This year in science we are building rockets. My groups name is The Rocketeers. We get to build with bottles and other materials. My group is using Styrofoam for our wings and covering it in duck tape.


What am I Proud Of?

I am proud of designing a very cool looking rocket. I am also proud of my group for making progress in designing each and every part of the rocket. I am also proud of my group for all working together. For example when my team had to decide what kind of wing shape we wanted, we all drew a couple in our notebooks and then we all decide which one would make the rocket go high.

What Frustrated Me?

Something that frustrated me was that my group wasn’t using teamwork 100% of the time. It also frustrated me that very minute there seemed to be something to disagree about. Also my group did the wrong measurements for our poster so we had to start over.

What I’m Looking Forward To

I am looking forward to 3-D print the nosecone for my rocket and I’m also looking forward to finishing my rocket. Another thing that I’m looking forward to is launching my rocket. Especially seeing if it explodes while launching it, or stays perfectly fine.

Overall I’m excited to launch my rocket and see how it turns out!
